@Dan Little: "I haven't yet been exposed -- in this visit or in prior visits -- to a sense of discontent"

Could this be because you are talking mainly (only?) to people who are doing pretty well? In this post, you cite conversations with: "a very accomplished young historical guide"; "a university staff person"; and a"twenty-something professional." Even some of these people cite problems (the related issues of intense pressure on children and extreme inequality); people might seem more discontented about these problems if they were themselves among the hundreds of millions of the very poor.

I was in Xi'an last year, I particularly like the "Muslim Quarter" - lots of good street food to be found.

On another note this guy from Kentucky with only a community college diploma works in China? I have an entire degree in computer science from a respected university in that field and I'm all but unemployable in North America. Where do I sign up to work in Shanghai?

Eric, you are obviously right in pointing out these people are from China's advantaged urban sector. And as I mention in the post, there is discontent in China that is expressed through thousands of disturbances annually. My point is a different one: this large segment of China -- hundreds of millions of people -- seems pretty solidly in support of one-party government.
