I am an undergraduate sociology major at a top 10 university. Your blog is an invaluable source of insight--I have often mentioned it to some of my professors. I also happen to know that several AJS editors are big fans (although perhaps you knew that already.)

In the future, I would like more detailed look at particular texts in the social sciences, e.g. your writings on Fourcade. A "book of the month" idea would be an excellent addition I think. In addition, I loved the interviews. Please keep that up.

Dear Daniel,

I am a PhD candidate in France; we have exchanged emails about your blog some time ago. Even though I rarely comment, I read as many notes as I can.

I have shared your posts on China, James C. Scott and other topics with colleagues, with students to whom I teach, and with friends outside of academia.

I believe this is the blog I have most referred to ever, both in terms of volume and of audience. I also cited it in academic presentations on scientific blogging, and in personal work where I used James Scott's ideas after discovering most of it on this blog.

Briefly put, your work on this blog is exemplary to me, and I wish you the best for the fourth year of UnderstandingSociety!

I appreciate the effort you put into you posts. I only started reading them a short time ago, so it is difficult for me to comment on the sum totality.

Henry at Crooked Timber just pointed readers over here. Having only just scratched the surface, I clearly have lots of catching up to do. Very absorbing stuff so far.

Daniel,

I am a Ph.D student drop out in anthropology/archaeology from a non-top ten university.

I first encountered your work through Varieties, and then came across your The Scientific Marx, (and other phil. of soc. sci articles) which I enjoyed and miss very much after my wife tore it up in a fit of rage.

Seems like it was just a couple years ago that I was downloading .pdf articles that I also enjoyed from your old web site. And now I find your blog, which is already three years old!

Needless to say I will be following your blog on a regular basis.

Yours truly, a would be social scientist, bored out of his mind with "Cultural Resource Management".
