Sounds like you've got the right Idea. Good luck with your math. Most people aren't aware that math has nothing to do with text-books. If you really want to get the best out of math, read books by Martin Gardner, Isaac Asimov, Georges Ifrah, Ivars Peterson, John Allen Paulos and Rosza Peter. You can probably find some in a library, and all of them in a good bookstore.

A great method is just to browse the Math, or Games (where you can sometimes find "recreational math" books) sections of a large (or good small) bookstore. Pick and chose from the ones that interest you, and the ones that fill the gaps in what you're child has learned so far.

Those popular writers are popular for a reason - they write for actual humans, not for school administrators who are slaves to curriculum and the textbook lobby.

The most basic and probably the most useful and lucid math book I can recommend is out of print, but you can still find cheap copies online. It's Asimov's "The Realm of Numbers." You'll learn as much as your child will from it. It is wonderful.
I hope this tip helps you.

Brian -
Thanks for the tips - I checked out your website and will look at the library for your recommendations!
Math is my strong suit so I feel pretty confident with the choices that I have made. It is also the only subject that she will be independently doing this year - which is why we got the Teaching Textbooks series.

Hi - Thanks for wanting to share your ideas & comments! I love hearing what others have to say, but just so that everyone is aware, I have the right and option to decide to post a comment or not. Foul language, inappropriate comments, lashing out at the world, or posting irrelevant ad links are a few reasons why posts may be rejected. My daughter & her friends like to frequently see what is being posted so therefore I would like to keep it clean.
I also have a tendency to reject "Anonymous" posts as I feel the content is not verifiable, therefore is often either irrelevant or not viable.
If your comment has been accepted - it will generally appear in less than 24 hours! Thanks Gina
