Since September 2016, I have been living alone in my little flat. I made some very last minute decisions last Summer and it was unfortunately too late for me to live with any of my friends. Consequently, I have ended up living by myself in a flat in the centre of Birmingham for the last 10 months and it has been a ball! I have now moved out but I have learnt quite a few things along the way and I wanted to share them with you today.
You become self-reliant
I mean, this is a pretty obvious one but it is something I had to become very quickly. I was pretty independent beforehand, hello boarding school and 4 years of uni but it was still a bit of a learning curve. When I first moved in, absolutely everything went wrong. It was so tragic but made for excellent snapchat story time. My hot water was not working, the kettle stopped working, the oven smashed on the first evening and the internet stopped working. It was pretty hilarious but you quickly learnt to be very self-sufficient, call people and fix things yourself.
Everything is your fault
You know those times when you run out of loo roll, or the washing up hasn't been done or the hoovering hasn't been done for a good month. Yeah, all of that is your own fault. You become responsible for absolutely everything and you can't blame it on anyone other than yourself. You suddenly realise how useless you can be as an adult.
Life is very expensive
You know what's fun? Paying bills. You know what's even more fun? Paying the whole of the bills yourself. I miss living with 8 other people and paying £2 for internet every month or having bills included. The good days. This is something I am really looking forward to living with people again just so that I don't pay silly amounts to bills again!
It is lonely
This is something that I didn't think I would struggle with, but I really did at the start of it all! I really missed just coming back from being in uni and talking to someone at the end of the day. I missed getting into TV programmes with friends and procrastinating by drinking silly amounts of tea. I really missed just general gossip and having a laugh! I started a new course so I was making a lot of new friends at the start, and my old uni friends were living the other side of the city. The course was pretty demanding so I didn't have a huge amount of free time to go out and socialise, so I did struggle a little at the start.
But you start to enjoy your own company a lot
I have been making myself laugh a lot from living alone, which is so sad but true. I have definitely become more comfortable in my own skin and you get really used to the way your brain works. It has definitely matured me a little and I like to think it has chilled me out a bit. You become quite sure of yourself and of what you want. I like making all of the decisions myself! I am not looking forward to having to compromise again!
You appreciate the time you spend with friends and family
As you don't have the social contact at home, you're forced to make an effort to socialise. Although this turns out to be quite expensive, you do really appreciate the time you do spend with friends and family. I used to take it for granted a lot! As I use my phone for socialising when I'm in the flat, I like to be completely away from my phone when I'm with people. Social contact really is 100000% better in person.
You have so much space to yourself
This is definitely the best part of living alone. I have a whole flat ALL TO MYSELF! A whole bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room! I am one of those people who owns an insurmountable amount of things and having all of this space to myself is amazing. I like being able to spread my things everywhere and keeping it the way that I like myself. I am definitely going to miss this! I will also miss being able to walk around without any clothes on.
You get so much done
Obviously, I still procrastinate. But not half on the level that I used to! It is so easy to just waste a couple of hours messing around with friends, on top of scrolling Twitter and Instagram. Now it's just social media scrolling procrastination! I did a very intense course this year, on top of doing job applications and blogging. Being able to have all of that space to myself with no distractions was a god send!
It is so much fun
I really have enjoyed these 10 months with myself. I learnt a lot about myself and had a lot of fun doing so. I learnt that I was more than capable of looking after myself and I really enjoyed the independence. As much as I am looking forward to seeing the cat and my parents over Summer and pals in September, I will definitely miss living alone. I am super excited for social contact though, you have no idea how much of a hermit I have been! Or maybe you follow my Twitter and see how often I tweet and maybe you have picked up on this...
