Excellent as usual.

One thing though is that it is hard the Pirates making huge progress this year when WE are supposed to be the ones that had the best minor league in the history of whatever. It is frustrating to see progress in some areas and then get a sour taste of the future we fear with a good team when Yost brings out Francis in the 8th. I am ok with keeping the developing players in for pressure situations, but we need to have Yost keeping himself sharp during pressure situations now if we hope to win later.

Also, I want to point out that there is an update on one of my favorite players/bloggers. too bad the news is not great.

anytime a players blog is entitled "The Rupture", it is not a good omen. But Disco is promising a return to blogging. Rany, I would love to see another interview of Disco on your blog if you get a chance.

I'm so smitten the Royals called on a stats team for more context on Paulino that I'll ignore the fact Yost called them "the computer guys upstairs."

I hate to call someone an idiot, but Lee Judge fits the bill.

Ok, that's harsh. After all, he's trying to do something similar to the people he hates. He is trying to quantify baseball player's contributions.

The problem is his chosen method. It's ridiculous. There is no actual DATA to back up those arbitrary POINTS.

One of the parts about Sabermetrics that makes it valuable; to teams like the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, etc. is that they look at traditional metrics (AVG) and asks the question "Does it really matter in winning ball games". And if it doesn't, what actually DOES (OBP).

Sure Getz doesn't make his manager as angry, but the's not helping the team win games.

End Rant :)

"And the biggest thing a position player can do on the field is hit a home run". How about robbing a player of a home run and creating an out. Why the term position player? Do you want to avoid a discussion of Billy Butler's inability to hit home runs? Bryan Pena is more likely to hit a home run. I'm a Billy fan and a Rany fan but this post struck me as disingenous.

Mark--uh...what?

Rany,

I am also very excited about Felipe Paulino. I came across an inspiring statistic the other day called SIERA. I'm sure you're aware of it, but it was modified Matt Swartz of FanGraphs and they have published it on their site now. Being curious about who lead the majors in SIERA, I pulled up the leaderboards for starting pitchers in 2011 with at least 50 IP. Guess who was number 1? Zack Greinke. Who was number 10? Felipe Paulino. And SIERA is no joke. It normally says around the same thing as xFIP, and sure enough, Felipe Paulino ranks 12th under the same filters.

Judge is a fun read and his access to the players is instructive. I agree Getz should go, but I liked his video with Lee about fielding.

Getz is a nice backup infielder, but that's it, and he'd be a great guy to backup 2B and SS, and also act as late-inning PR. I suspect when either Chen or Francis (or both) gets traded next week, and the Royals go back to a 5-man rotation, then Giavotella comes up. Perhaps that is wishful thinking on my part.

Please don't say nice things about Judge. He's an idiot and does not deserve it. His access to the players is a result of him working for the KC Star. Which is also a mistake. From what I've seen, the only players that like him are the players who do the "little things." So basically, he's pandering to the crappy players and they like him, because hey, nobody ever says anything good about them.

John- Getz would make a wonderful utility guy, if he could play the left side of the infield. Unfortunately, he can't. There is no roster room for two "second base only" guys. If you want to see Giavotella, Getz has to go.

Rany, I have seen very little from you about the gimmicky 6 man staff. Solving the situation of having a below average starting pitching staff by giving them all a turn and thereby lessening the number of games that the better ones pitch seem like insanity to me.

Side note: Jim Thome is my favorite non-Royals player of all time. He has also hit more home runs against the Royals than any player in history. Go figure.

As a Twins fan, I said the same thing about him two years ago, even though he hit the homer in the Game 163 in the Southside.

When I was a boy, I had a Carl Taylor autographed baseball bat.

Does anyone know if Getz has any options left? (not that the Royals will ever consider that)

Finally one of the Asthmatic-Pop-Tart-eaters responded. The fact that the KC Star can publish the Judging the Royals nonsense shows how far it's sports page has fallen. According to Judge "Heads-up base running" plays are of equal value to doubles. Since Alex Gordon strikes out so much he is only a little better than Gets on offense. His SOs cancel out all of his HRs, 2Bs & 3Bs combined, per Lee Judge?????????? Alex is esentiall awarded 0 points for OPS. As long as you weakly ground out to 2B its okay, but a skrike-out looking...MINUS 2-points for YOU!!!!!

Actually, Paulino struck Thome out looking on the pitch before. If he were as greaat a hitter as you say, he would've hit that pitch out. Pretty obvi that the ump lied. What a disgrace to the game showing Paulino up like that after Paulino struck him out. And, really, he wouldn't have so many home runs if he didn't sell out on every pitch. I mean really, all he has to do to get a hit any time he bats is bunt to third, but he's such a sellout he swings for the fences on every pitch. I hate Thome.

I was listening to the game where Ventura broke his slump. Early in the game, I told my 11 year old baseball fan son that Ventura was going to hit, I just hoped he'd wait until the Royals series was over.

@Khazad...I agree. I have no particular attachment to Getz, I only see him as a utility type guy, if you're going to keep him (and I can't imagine he's still here next year). I don't think he does anything better than Mike Aviles does, except perhaps defense, but Getz has played some 3B, and could sub for Escobar in a pinch. Aviles is the more likely guy to keep in that utility role. Giavotella is hitting .400 since June 1 at Omaha, with some pop. From reports, Giavotella is as hard a worker as anyone, and has the gym-rat, "scrappy" factor that many people like as well. As with Hosmer, there appears to be no reason to keep him in AAA. Also, perhaps Moose has snapped out of his slump.

Getz cannot hit, It's a plain as the nose on your face. CAN.NOT.HIT. He is a mediocre defender who has no utility value. Put one between his eyes (figuratively speaking) and move on.

As a baseball writer Lee judge makes a pretty mediocre political cartoonist.

I have a slightly unorthodox idea. Why don't the Royals buy low on BJ Upton? We haven't got a clear center-fielder of the future, and Upton is arguably a premium talent who needs a change of scenery.

With GMDM drafting I'd much rather have the compensatory dfraft pick for a type B free agent then the two players the Royals acquired.

They ruined his chances of being a Type-B before they traded him.

July 25, 2011 at 9:28 PM

Unfortunately, he'll be a Type-B after he finishes the season with Detroit....but that would never have happened in KC.

Escobar got a day off...Moose is getting a day off....when in the heck does Getz finally get a day off?

P.S. The Kyle Davies Drinking Game participants stayed remarkably sober tonight.

Hey Rany,

I"m seeing a bunch of chatter on MLBTR & Twitter about the Royals being in on BJ Upton. What are your thoughts on this? Seems that if we actually did pursue him it would severely deplete our farm system and besides that, wouldn't it block Lorenzo Cain? I mean yeah, he's a good player & would improve the team...but at what cost? This is one rumor that I hope doesn't pan out...

July 26, 2011 at 12:05 PM

I think it depends on what we give up. I think Upton really needs a change of scenery. I'd be for a trade as long as it didn't cost too much.

While I think Upton is an interesting thought I would actually like to see Hunter Pence in RF. Houston is saying he is off the table but that is doubtful. Gordon, Cain and Pence in the outfield? I think I can live with that.

I think what he was trying to say is between the players on his current roster and the players coming up on the farm system, he thinks there is already enough talent at the Major & Minor league level for this team to be a winner. If no one wants to offer him fair value then he's prepared to stand pat. I don't disagree.

I also think it is proof of what Rany has said, the pendelum is swung and prospects are overvalued.

Heck yeah, getting two players for Aviles was good enough, but one of them is a legitimate major league prospect! Navarro was the Red Sox 12th rated prospect heading into the season. Not bad for a guy that the Royals obviously didn't think was a part of their future.

It's always nice when the Royals make a trade that has the other team's fans panties in a bunch. They are furious over the Aviles trade!! :)
