I believe Greinke is pitching Saturday and Meche Sunday. If I'm not mistaken. I should say that I hope Greinke is pitching because I have tickets for Saturday and had been expecting to see Davies.

And the rumor keeps persisting that the Royals are considering Jarrod Washburn, even though that's the strength of the team. Maybe they're figuring on him being another high-priced reliever???

Don't complain too much about the bullpen. Hillman is liable to go all Billy Martin on us and start making the starters go nine until all their arms fall off.

Time to fire Owen and make Frank White third base coach.

you're crazy if u don't think the gun was juiced. everyone was reading 2-3 mph harder than they would normally throw.

RE: Dave Owen

Another blunder this evening by sending Jose Guillen trying to score from first on a double. Easy pickins.

April 9, 2010 at 8:46 PM

Anonymous KW said...

Yeah, and Guillen got thrown out after Ankiel wandered off second on a ground ball to short and ended up out at third. The Royals hit two balls to the wall in that inning and didn't score a run. I remember Whitey Herzog talking about becoming a manager and the first thing he did was get coaches that knew how to teach the game. Nobody's teaching this team diddly.

Someone needs to talk to R Neyer about his 'tude. We all know how strategically challenged our front office/coaching staff is, and we all get that same sinking feeling whenever a reliever not named Soria pitches... but come on, man! He's sucking the life out of me. He's taking cynicism to new lows.

I nominate you, Rany.

The baserunning problem on Ankiel's double wasn't so much the third base coach. It was the fact that ANKIEL DIDN'T JUST STOP AT FIRST.

OR AT SECOND.

It was a tie game, bottom half of the 10th. Only leading runner matters AT ALL.

And there's no way that Owens was waving Ankiel to third, either. It was entirely Rick's decision.

Good win tonight, I'll take it! I saw the gun at the K read Soria at 95 tonight, no way that happened. I hope Hoch has his velocity up, that could really be special, but the guns at the K seem as juiced as (insert any non-Royal from 1989-2007 here).

DM on Petro's show said that he was encouraged by Mendoza's outing and that he expects big things from him; he's a guy all the scouts saw great things in.

Just thought I'd share that with the group.

Assuming that is true, it is just "moore" evidence that Dayton really believes he is the only GM in the history of baseball that can build a winner by signing cast-offs and getting performance out of them that no one else ever has.

Can anyone give me one example of a career resurrection by DM that has yielded even a mediocre major league player (that is still on the roster) in the time he has been here?

Man, we are in big trouble with this guy at the helm.

I'm still very confused as to why Mendoza is on our team there was an article in the KC Star during spring training about Blake Wood that made him seem like the perfect fit in the bullpen. Big, hard throwing, strikeouts all of those good things you like to see in your relievers. I don't remember reading anything about Mendoza, was it an options remaining thing?

Who is going to be sent down when Gil is activated on Sunday?

I have been very encouraged by the starting pitching, but one thing about Banister's outing did trouble me. All last year he was going on about how he need to become a ground ball pitcher, and he seemed to have success be fore he got injured and his ERA skyrocketed. Did you see his fly balls to ground balls Wednesday? 12 Fly-balls and only 2 Ground-balls

Thanks for the insights. Always good to read. Now with Davies quality start, the rotation seems to be on a roll.

I am a big fan of Hochevar's new delivery, well maybe not new, but tweaked delivery. Getting rid of the half tip-toe set up seemed like it gave him better balance and drive to the plate. It's not like I'm against unorthodox deliveries and I can understand maybe some of the reasons why he used to set up the way he did. But I'm not sure the half raised foot set up was the right thing for him. He's a guy who really airs it out max effort and for those types, I don't think starting off with your balance less than 100 percent solid is the right formula. When I went and checked some of his starts from last year on mlb.tv archives, I was struck by how more rushed his motion was. I think he's also shifted more to the middle of the mound from the third base side where he used to start.

I know it was only one start and he's thrown great games before only to throw even worse ones for a long time after, but I wouldn't be surprised if the altered delivery makes him an above-average pitcher this year.

Hochevar's results were very positive. I know he had those three games last year where he was statistically dominant, but he looked like he dominated the other night. He wanted the ball and he wanted to get to the next guy. I hope he keeps that.

I think the new delivery is a big part of it. I also think he is a year older and year more polished. That has to help also.

The starting pitching continues to keep the games close.

I hate to moan and beg, but please put Aviles in the starting lineup. Have Maier start three games a week. Give Pena some at bats. Even put Guillen in the field once or twice a week.

Having a 'starting lineup' and not deviating from it, and not even pinch hitting is so frustrating. It would be one thing if they were scoring a bunch of runs and you didn't want to mess with a good thing, but they aren't.

If they truly want a 'defensive team' on the field, Aviles would play over Betancourt, Kila would play in the field over Butler, and Maier would play regularly in the outfield.

Then there is the sieve also known as the Royals bullpen. I guess there are two lines of thinking. One, I am sure favored by Hillman and Moore, is to keep running them out there because they can't possibly keep being as bad as they have been.

The second is to blow it up and get some new faces in there.

I for one would like to see some moves made. But it would be nice to see some sort of plan being employed out there and roles defined. Individually, I think all of the relievers have some very good qualities, but like Rany said, use them with a plan in mind.

Maybe I am crazy, but I actually think there is the talent for this team to compete for a playoff spot this year, especially given the starting pitching. It ain't gonna happen if Hillman and Moore don't wake up and look at the talent they have in front of them and use it properly.

I see Aviles has been sent to Omaha to play shortstop. Does anyone think this is because the Royals are realizing that Betancourt is a disaster and want to get Aviles up to par ASAP to take over?

Fast Eddie,

I think all reasonably intelligent people wish that to be true, unfortunately DM and Trey have done nothing to prove they're reasonably intelligent.

April 11, 2010 at 8:45 PM

On the contrary. We are getting rid of Aviles so that Yuniesky Betancourt won't feel pressure as he settles in as the Royals' long-term shortstop. Within the week, we will be announcing a 10-year contract extension for Betancourt. Yuniesky has exceeded all our expectations and we are pleased to have him as part of The Process.

Go Royals!

Actually we sent Aviles down so he and Kila can captain the O-Royals to the AAA crown!
At least that's the only logical answer i can come up with.

As a former Royals employee, let me offer my help. My current employer, the Boston Red Sox, will trade you multiple-time All-Stars David Ortiz and Mike Lowell even up in exchange for Kila and Aviles. Surely, the prospect of having two World Series heroes on your squad in exchange for two Triple-A players will bring the fans out to Kauffman Stadium.

I'm glad Aviles is in Omaha. With all of the time he missed last year, a bunch of at bats at AAA will be good for him. Plus I don't want him trying to make the throw from third so soon after TJ surgery.

How many games do we have to watch the bullpen blow with our best reliever never entering the game before something changes?

This game was on the line in the seventh inning. I'm so glad they saved Soria for the bottom of the ninth. Oh wait, there was no bottom of the ninth. oops 3-5

Here are my three main thoughts, I think I remember last years royals lighting up Mendoza, then he was sent down to the minors the next day.

Wasn't the pitching goal this season to have more strikes, and fewer walks? Apparently the bullen didn't get the message (Except for Parrish, and Soria), At least the starters got the message

Finally, I find it amazing the stark contrast between the starting pitching and the bullpen thus far.

bullpen continues to get hammered and guess which member of the pen has pitched the fewest innings and faced the fewest hitters?

Time to ditch the closer tag and go back to the fireman role.

April 13, 2010 at 6:24 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gald to see I'm not the only one who thinks Soria should be first out of the pen when we have a lead. It shoudn't matter what inning (well, like maybe 7th inning on...) but at least we can get a win every 3 or 4 days when he can pitch, instead of blowing EVERY lead and never get to him EVER.

What's the alternative... 3-159? That's what it's starting to look like.
