Rany, you hit the nail on the head! It was driving me nuts that the best part of Wednesday's game was overshadowed by the spork's batting #3, and the promise, and all that. For the better part of a month now, I haven't even looked at the scores.. I go striaght to the box to see what Kila did. That's much more important in the long run. Now let's hope this really is him finding his groove and letting it happen for one last month.

The real concern here is whether or not Yuni will be upset about not batting third yet.

You said it, exactly! Why did he sit a switch hitter and a lefty on a day they faced a righty with a day off the next day? Bloomquist shouldn't even be on the team anymore, letting alone starting 3b and batting 3rd. They have several guys in AAA that should get their shot now. Bloomquist better not be on this team next year, or I will give up.

Lucas, Falu, Thorman, Fields, Betemit, Aviles, Dyson, Parraz, Lough, and Miller are players that I would like to see playing right now. Bloomquist makes a great spork, and a "ballplayer" if you will, but he is not good. I know it would take 2 of any of these guys to make up for the versatility of Bloomy, but any 2 of these guys are much better than him.

"3:58 pm. jfishsports Yost's post-game should be him just walking in, taking the microphone, throwing it down, and walking out with two middle fingers raised."

That is f'ing awesome. Absoultely hilarious.....

It's games like this that will get a manager fired over the long haul. They will a see veteran marginal player have a good game and think that means the guy needs more playing time.

Just stay the course and get Gordon and Kila another 125+ PA's over the rest of the season.

I saw the lineup, and then I de-programmed my DVR from recording the game. And then this happened. I didn't think there was any way I could watch both this game and the Spurs-Young Boys champions' league qualifier. Ah well.

I agree with you about Yost, and with a whole crop of guys about to burst onto the scene, I hope he keeps sticking them in there and letting them play. He also seems to have figured out that alternating lefties and righties is a good idea, which is nice.

I hope this doesn't give Yost false confidence in Bloomquist. Otherwise, it has been grea to see that the team isn't quitting or laying down in these extra-inning games, despite not playing for anything.

You have to give Yost all the credit for that.

Expect a lot more Bloomquist the rest of the way. Need to see what we have there......

Bloomquist sucks and is just an abomination on the baseball field. The really sad thing is, batting him 3rd got us made fun of nationally by a ton of people. The Royals embarrass themselves enough on the field but to do ridiculous stunts like bat Tony Pena Bloomquist THIRD!.....this organization deserves all the ridicule it gets.

Can't wait to see the Bloomquist batting third again today. Then again, it's not like anyone will be on base when he does come up.

Rany, your blog makes me so happy! How could the world not be Royals fans? Perhaps someday a movie will be made--some sort of "Damn Yankees" in reverse. also, when mentioning shortstops, we need to find the clip of David Letterman making fun of Buddy Biancalana! Such a rich history! (I am serious--your blog has me still smiling 3 hrs after the 1st read).

Love the post Rany. I know everyone stomps on Bloomy. He's nothing more than a servicable Major Leaguer that Dayton got to fill spots until his draft kids are ready. Can't ask for more than barely average from the guy.

Not that we needed another reason, but at least Kila gives Royals fans another reason to watch.

Bloomquist barely average? Might want to recheck your stats

Bloomquist has 2 discernable skills, speed and versatility. Considering that he's only made 3 mill over the 2 years he's been on the team, it's not like he was a bad contract. Besides, who's he holding back right now?

My least favorite KC clean-up decision? June 29, 2007. The Royals cleanup hitter? Shane Costa and his .366 career slugging percentage.

He went 2-4 and the Royals won the game 8-1. I guess Buddy Bell was a bit of a prophet, too.

Here's the OPS numbers for tonight's starting lineup:

.623
.615 (Kendall)
.543
.967 (Betemit)
.664
.646
.704
.714
.563

Compare these to the Pirates.

Who is Bloomquist holding back? Every team he plays on with his career.640 OPS- that's who. He's not average or even close. He plays a lot of positions and he plays them all poorly. Only on a team like the Royals is this scrub doing anything other than on the bench.

He is holding back Lough, Miller, Parraz, Dyson, Thorman, Falu, Lucas, Aviles, Betemit, Gordon, and Maier. Everytime he makes a start he keeps one of these guys from playing. He should not be on this team, and he shouldn't ever start. I am not saying his contract is a bad one, b/c in the grand scheme of things 1.5 mil a year isn't much. I am saying that he shouldn't play unless injuries force him in the lineup.

Bloomquist, Kendall, Yuni, Guillen, Bale, Gload, Anderson, Mendoza, TPJ, Getz, Ponson, Horam, Jacobs, etc.....

Ah, the genius of Dayton F'N Moore!

Rany- any thoughts on doing a lineup blog. I actually think the #3 spot is not a very important spot in the lineup. It comes to bat with nobody on and 2 out more than any other spot in the lineup.
Since nobody asked, here is how I would construct a lineup:
1. Best OB% (speed doesn't matter) But if your best power hitter, than take your #2 OB%
2. Best OPS
3. 6th best hitter
4. 3rd best hitter
5. 4th best hitter
6. 5th best hitter
7. 8th best hitter
8. worst hitter
9. 7th worst hitter

Try and put speed in front of singles hitters. Try not to put lefties back to back.

Of course, the Royals have a bunch of singles hitters making this pretty much worthless.

You know Kyle, of all those names you mentioned, not one of them are any good. There are no future all stars in that group. So like I said, he's holding no one back.

And for the most part, Bloomquist has rode the bench this year. He's on pace for only about 200 AB's for the entire year.

How is Everett Teaford able to post such a good record, while seemingly not being a prospect of any note given his age?

August 28, 2010 at 10:33 AM

Blogger John said...

Anon,

Teaford, by all accounts, combines excellent control and the ability to change speeds well, but only has mediocre stuff. Pitchers who can hit the black and change speeds well absolutely own minor leaguers, even if they can't throw 85. There are tons of cases of pitchers who dominated every minor league they pitched in, but get to the majors and can't handle MLB hitters.

Every once in a while, a guy like this comes to the big leagues and succeeds, like Bob Tewksbury did if you remember him. But most guys who pitch like Teaford does aren't really prospects. And he's in the wrong organization to get a chance, because Dayton Moore seems to base his decisions almost entirely on scouting reports.

Michael, I never said they were All-Stars, but at this point in the season you need to play guys that might be a part of the team next year. Bloomquist will not be a part of this team. As for the guys I listed, I sure hope they at least get a shot. We may not have an All-Star in this team until Moustakas, Hosmer, Myers, Monty, Lamb, and Duffy all get settled in, around 2014.

Kyle, here in a few days, the guys that the Royals want to get a look at will all be up. They'll get looked at, get the experience of a big league clubhouse, etc. and all that they need. If some player doesn't get the call, it's not Slick Willie's fault.
