I don't know what to say - I am speechless. As George Costanza once said, "I am without speech!" I had a similar experience with my daughter in softball a few years back. When she got a big hit in a game (and there were many of those), she said that she kept her back elbow up just like I showed her at a Royals game when I told her to watch Miguel Cabrera's swing. Yes, it was an opponent, but I didn't want her to emulate Yuni's "hitting" stroke...

I also want to thank you for educating me on the plight of the Syrians. One of my favorite posts of yours was a few years back when you posted a blog on the history of Syria, and the many obstacles that your ancestors faced. Being the typical myopic American, I had no idea until you posted that blog. That really opened my eyes. My donation will be on its way tomorrow...

Blog when you can. We have met in person, and talked about the challenges of balancing professional/personal/fandom issues before. I have 2 kiddos - age 18 and 16. I can't imagine having FOUR children ages 12 and under. I totally get it, and will welcome anything that you can blog in the future - even if it is just a blog or two in October only (let's hope for that opportunity!).

It has been a joy reading you over the years, and a pleasure to meet you once. (at a BP game at Kauffman. I don't expect you to remember but it was a pleasant experience.)

Also, finding out that protecting Howard instead of Conine may have gotten you into this means at least something positive came from that. Off the field, anyway. Good luck with your practice, and hopefully there will be some October writing to do.

I'm sad to see you leave, but good luck, and thanks for the great reads. Please try to be as Royals-centric as possible on Grantland when you write something for them. And as a lifelong Republican, don't forget the door is always open :)

My son Daniel just turned 14 and baseball is his favorite thing in the world to do. Like your daughter, he is a catcher who bats lead-off. We live in Western Oklahoma and could not get Royals games on TV until two years ago, just as the Royals were becoming good. Last year's run through the playoffs cemented Daniel as a diehard Royals fan. During the World Series, he worked out that I was 13 when the Royals last won the Series and that he was 13 for the next one. Now, he watches their games more often than I do and texts me throughout or makes me come watch exciting plays he has paused on the DVR. I still can't get him to read the Star daily for all things Royal, but he does have an ESPN alert on his phone for scores and Royals news. While reading this column, my eyes were welling up as you described your daughter's new fandom. Thanks for all that effort and all that passion you've shared with us over the years. I'm now clicking over to make a (small) donation. Good luck and I look forward to reading anything you post in the future.

I don't remember exactly when I found you. I know before I did, I believed I was virtually all alone in my love of the Royals. I largely hid that love in a closet, embarrassed for what the world might think. My family couldn't understand why I listened and watched and yelled, even in August when all was long lost. The Royals were like a bad investment that you kept poring money into, hoping it would finally turn a profit. Insufferable Cards fans can never understand what we've lived through as they look down upon us from their lofty perch.

I'm 52 and my earliest baseball memories were of old Municipal, still the greenest place on earth I've ever seen. Oh the sights and smells of walking through those beer stained, worn out concrete tunnels to green painted wooden chairs that looked out on the green, pock-marked outfield walls. And the grass - just flawless. I had a full size, green A's bat from Bat Day that I'm sure was from their last season in KC. No collector's piece,I actually USED that bat! It cracked and I wrapped it with electrical tape from my dad's shop. It eventually found the trash barrel after I used it to hit rocks. The ignorance of youth!

My 19 year old daughter, who's actually football crazy, joined me for the wildcard game. We spent five glorious hours together in left field, hugging, crying, dying and ultimately exulting with pure joy. Her memory will be of the sea of blue, the Hosmer triple that hit right below us and of Salvy's miracle.

I hope your girls find memories like those to sustain them through the heartbreak that always accompanies sports. Don't let them be Yankees fans or Cardinals fans. Don't let them take the easy way out.

Thanks for all the writing, the insight and the laughs. See you in the land of Twitter.

To say you will be missed by the devotees of your blog is such an understatement. You are insightful, humorous and a really outstanding writer. Life and reality rear their heads over time, and the path you have chosen is to me the only sensible one. I wish you only the best wherever your road takes you. Like it or not, even if you had become a Cubs employee, I think you would still have bled Royal blue.

I just want to thank you for your insightful comments and thoughts about the Royals. I've read your blog from the start. I will miss reading your blog on a regular basis. This last blog brought me to tears. I pray for you and your family----and for all those that are suffering from the needless violence in the Middle East. I pray for all who have been displaced and are suffering from this violence. I will make a donation to your worthy cause. Thank you for blessing me with your wonderful, insightful writing. God Bless!

Rany, your blog has been 'the real thing' all of these years. There have been times I didn't agree with your analysis, and even times where I thought the analysis was going a little too far (I mean baseball players ARE people, who knew??). All in all though, it was the joy of seeing someone passionately express their thoughts and feelings into words that hooked me. The deep analysis, the cheesy jokes (hey, I still laughed), the posts about Syria, the manager bashing, the manager praising..... IT WAS ALL WORTH IT for us and you, I believe. I started reading the blog as an escape from work, or as a bedtime story (sorry to my wife), and from the first series of posts until last fall, I would check for an article DAILY. Well after the words in February, I figured that was it.... but I would still go over to www.ranyontheroyals.com just in case, maybe weekly. Tonight I should be studying for an exam, but instead I am pulling my credit card out as we speak to make a donation that I have no second thoughts about. If the Royals can send a few million Juan Gonzalez' way, I can spare $50. Hoping for the playoffs, praying for Syria...

Thank you, Rany! You combined eloquent passion for a team and a game with statistically-based (and usually reasonable) arguments in a way that magnified my passion for that team, game, and statistically-based arguments.

Big thanks, Rany -- grew up in KC during the Brett years and have always followed the team (from west coast). I feel like I discovered a comrade in arms when I discovered your blog. Why are all the best baseball writers from the Midwest? I'll always be on the lookout for whatever you write about and wish you the best with your practice and family.

Man, what a bittersweet read! I have devoured your writing like someone who hasn't eaten a meal in three days would devour a slice of Giordano's stuffed pizza. Sometimes my eyes just cannot move as quickly as I would implore them. Thank you for the gift you have given all of us. It seems fitting, in a way, that it has culminated in a new era for Royals baseball - a winning era. You are still my favorite segment on 810 radio, and I will certainly double intentionality to catch your Grantland articles. Last, as a Christian, I also thank you for helping to bring us awareness of what's happening in Syria to brothers and sisters of a different culture and faith; this will be in my prayers.

Rany, loved your run and I don't believe for one moment you can give up your addiction of writing about the Royals. Twitter will only keep you satisfied for so long......
I will keep monitoring because I know when September hits your hands will shake, sweat will roll, and like the Coo Coo for CoCo puff bird, you will be back in force. Back to the first step of the twelve step program.

Cheers,

I'm not a baseball fan, so had not seen your blog before. It was linked from a Worldbuilder campaign for Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

I'm just posting to say, as the granddaughter of a Christian immigrant from Safita, thank you for the link to SAMS and for what you are doing there.
