Moore gets too attached to players (ones not named Wil Myers) once they're with the organization or the big league team for an extended period. Had we traded Butler after his all star year, we might've gotten a real return that could be knocking on the door of respectability right now. He was never a great player or very athletic, so selling high would've been the smart thing to do. Now, as you've noted, we're stuck.

The local media is saying there's no way we'll trade Butler to another wild card contender because of the possibility of it blowing up in our face, but I agree with you that it's almost a must at this point. Picking up Franklin would be a boon in my book. Then you either try to retrain him to play third or maybe right field.

I'm mystified why Dyson isn't starting more. You're one of the few people covering the Royals that offers up real insight, but then again you aren't in KC so maybe that's the difference.

Really had it with the Royals, question was could the pitching continue to do well and it has done great again, but could we get some #%$&%* offense our corner infielders couldn't be any worse and what kind of DH is Butler.. least I can remember the 85 Royals, be nice to get an owner that really cares instead of running the the team like Walmart......

Gee, even Rany is out of ideas. If the answer is Dyson every day and trading Butler for Nick Franklin (who is not good enough to play for the worst offense in the AL), Rany either is not answering the right question or there is no right question. Anyway, I think the Mariners are about to throw every prospect they have for David Price, or maybe both Price and Zobrist.

How about trading Shields for a legitimate bat who also is in the walk year of his contract (don't know who that would be). But I think a starting pitcher is often over valued for a stretch run. At this point, it is about 12 starts, whereas a bat will be in there every day.

Aoki's April numbers were pretty much in line with his first 2 years in MLB. I wonder if his nosedive after the first month was a result of injury, or my pet theory (only slightly tongue-in-cheek), that the Royals' coaching finally took its toll on him.

I think Aoki's numbers started downhill last year as pitchers and defense caught up with him. Royals should have recognized it. In 2013, his slug dropped 63 points and his OPS+ was 100 (down from 109). Typical league catching up with him and now he is in a stronger pitching league. I don't think there is any sense in playing him. He also most never hits the ball hard, while he hit 18 home runs in the first two years.

Ned and GMDM need to go. Time for a complete organizational rebuild (again). Hopefully the Glass family's newfound willingness to spend will combine with a competent new regime.

Tonight capped off a week of inexplicably poor managerial decisions by Ned Yost. No, they didn't get anything from their offense, but Ned seemed to give up on the game in the third inning. Letting Yordano Ventura rot on the mound rather than getting him out of there. They were down 3-0, and Ned gave up. He left him in there for the 4th, then he left him in there for the 5th until he loaded the bases and gave up another run. That really seemed to translate to the rest of the dugout.

Last night was loaded with awful, but capped off with Raul Ibanez pinch hitting with Lorenzo Cain on the bench.

People, for some reason, forgot about last Sunday's awfulness of resting players before a break, pinch hitting Sal when it was obvious he was going to get walked, then pinch running Cain to run 90 feet when he would have been much-better used pinch-hitting for Aoki with the bases juiced (why Cain and Sal weren't in the game in the first place is equally bad).

You can just look at the two rosters today and see how bad GMDM has been at his job. The Red Sox constantly are able to bring up a couple guys every year that make the team better even if they're not great prospects. Vazquez, Holt, and Betts just this year alone. Where's the Royals so-called great farm system?

On Aoki, I wonder if it's just that AL teams are so used to dealing with Ichiro that they've just had zero problem with Ichiro Lite (?)

He's hitting .348/.392/.435 vs. LHP this year and .311/.358/.401 against them for his career. Dyson has a .528 OPS vs. LHP in a small sample for his career. He's improved on that this year, but it's clear the Royals have avoided playing him vs. LHP, probably for the best. A platoon makes sense, regardless of your distaste for Aoki.

Well, your numbers on Aoki are correct for 79 PA's this year. He has produced 19 singles, 4 doubles and a triple. Driven home 4 runs and walked 4 times. Still no punch and don't the overall numbers look like a clear sample size defect (with BA driving up OPS)?

But I agree it may well be better than putting Dyson up. I think putting Maxwell up is the best solution without a trade. What a mess.

I accidentally posted this on the "Bullpen" comment board when I meant o put it on the board for "Rotation". I think it fits better here anyways.

State of the Royals: Everything
Dayton Moore is the GM.

That might as well begin and end the discussion. And I am not saying that as a "I hate GMDM; he never did anything right" commentary. I think he was a good GM, just not good enough. Over the years, he built a great defense, a very good bullpen, and a good starting a rotation. He resigned his young guys to team friendly, long term contracts.

But, 8 years is enough. He isn't good enough. His inability to understand or develop offense will be his legacy.

Still, I will always appreciate his work for taking us from laughing stock to irrelevant. (I know that sounds like a back handed compliment, but I really mean it in the best way possible.) Now we need a GM to take the next step from irrelevant to relevant.

Jim Bowden was on the radio the other day. I liked the way he sounded. What are his credentials like? Was he interviewing on the air for the job?

And what about Rany? Why not? I secretly hoped that he was professing to leave the blog business after this year because he had designs on the Royals' GM job. Let's get a modern baseball thinker in that position!

Dayton says we are a discriminating buyer not a seller this year before the trade deadline and Ned's job is safe. He's taking responsibility for the disappointing season. David Glass during the All-Star break stated Moore and Yost's jobs were safe, playoffs or not. I assume they all believe this franchise is still right around the corner to being really good. I disagree. Would get rid of them all if I had a magic wand.

After being a Royal's fan and follower for 45 years I can't take any more. I don't see a rosy picture for the near future and have no confidence in these guys in the long term.

My last suggestion since the on field team is probably not going to get much better, don't leave Hudler & Levebrvre doing tv broadcasts together. It's obvious Ryan can't stand Rex and Rex is pretty bad as the color man. I like Ryan but he is unprofessional when dealing with Hudler. Very bad chemistry

I don't even follow other sports anymore because I've invested so much of myself into baseball. I say the Royals are my favorite team and the other 29 are my second favorite. In 2009, believe it or not, I wrote on Royalboard that the Royals would never win more than 86 games under Dayton Moore. I still believe in Montgomery/Hosmer/Moustakas/Lamb, but more as the prospects they were than what they've become. But, if Jim Bowden becomes the Royals next GM, I am done with this team and this sport and I cannot say that enough!

Have you ever thought about learning how the game is actually played, instead of just blindly trusting every current stat that's thrown your way?

Have you ever considered that there's not too much that happens in the game that isn't covered by a stat?

Two positive articles on the state of the rotation and bullpen get a total of 7 comments.

The offense column gets 14 and counting.

It amazes me how much Royals fans love to bitch and complain.

That's the entire idea that ruins conversation between people who think that stats cover just about everything, and people who know the game that realize that they don't even come close. Sure, they're helpful, but there's a ton that happens that either can't be quantified, or is tracked in a very misleading way. That's why it helps to understand the game first..

Well, since you know the game so very well, perhaps you can identify some of these very important things that goes on within a game and how they're so much more helpful to the the game than say a double play, an SF, a HR, a win, a loss...

Royals have gone as far as they can with Dayton. This is moronic! James Shields meant all in. The AL west thanks KC for their stupidity. Just got a guaranteed three teams in playoffs.

Since Rany is absent (no doubt due to professional and family things, and I totally get that) - and is probably as bipolar on the Royals as I am now, I would like to offer a different perspective. The Royals have the pitching to make a playoff run, but there were simply no bats available at the trade deadline. I wouldn't want to pay for Marlon Byrd's age 38 and 39 seasons - would you? Here's to picking up a bat in the August waiver time. The schedule is favorable after this week. Call me the eternal optimist, but I like our chances. Like him or not, at least GMDM has made Royals' baseball a subject of interest and discussion at this time of year. We've haven't had that in back-to-back years since the last time that I saw my waistline. That was a long, long time ago...
