Good points all.

I hope Crow is the starter that the Royals think he can be. I almost thought that the first half of last season was a lot of luck and the second half was a disaster.

What factors are the Scouts pointing to that would indicate that Crow can be an effective starter?

Glad to have Bruce back.

Because Kyle Davies is the losingest regular starter in modern baseball history. And because the Royals were effectively the sole team to start Davies for his 4+ years of futility, many KC fans have come to accept anything above the worst level of starting pitching as reasonable roster management. As such, does it not stand to reason that KC fans need a statistical measurement tool more indicative of a pitcher's performance than Wins Above Replacement?

Such a tool could be called Wins Above Davies (WAD). Accordingly, Kyle Davies would be the statistical measuring stick, and his value set at a quantity of 0.0 wins. This would then allow Royals fans a reading of how much better (or worse?) any current starting pitcher is relative to Kyle Davies. KC fans don't often say "how good is this guy?"(see Mazzaro, Vin).

Subsequently, Royals fans wouldn't be left to wonder how much Chen has regressed this year when the question they are really asking is "how much better is he than Davies?"

As facetious as this may sound, it's hardly different than zero Kelvin, zero-point energy, or the threshold of hearing. Can it get any colder than Kyle Davies?

I don't think that the rotation is acceptable if they wish to compete for a playoff spot this year. It could get them to .500 maybe.

Steak, the new zero is Luke Hochevar. Though he has always had better peripherals, in actual performance, Luke and Kyle are nearly twins. They were born a week apart. They have identical (5.34) ERA's as a Royal's starter. Luke is 30-43 in 96 starts, Kyle was 29-44 in 99. Luke's ERA+ as a Royal's starter is 80 to Kyle's 81.

He needed the hot streak at the end of the season just to be as good as Davies.

Khazad, as you probably know, those #s look a lot different over the last 2 yrs.

Hochy: 48 starts, 4.72 era, 87 era+
Davies 45 starts, 5.69 era, 73 era+

Clearly pitchers heading in two different levels of crappiness.

One tolerable (barely), the other out of ML baseball.

Perhaps with a deeper bullpen, we will stop insisting on starters pitching 7 innings every time out. At times it looked as though the manager was looking at the pitch count in the 3rd inning and extrapolating how many innings his starter 'should' pitch that night. It seemed more prevalent during Hochevar's starts. If a guy has a track record of giving up runs in the 6th and 7th why not take him out when trouble begins? I realize it wasn't always the 6th before problems appeared, but Hoch's stats would gave to look better after only 6 innings. Averaging 6 innings per start still puts a pitcher at 200 for the season. Manage more like a playoff game, dare I say, try the Larussa match-up games from the 6th inning on.

I like the Wins Above Davies idea. In the last 2 years, Chen has given the Royals 5.3 bWAD. Hochevar has been 2.9 bWAD over that time. Felipe Paulino, in just 124 2/3 innings with the Royals, is 2.6 bWAD...which provides some gravity on just how terrible Davies was.

Just as I was getting ready to complain that I have been checking your column on Grantland for any updates you left me a present this morning. Thank you.

By the way Grantland is a very nice website. I enjoy the diversity.

Steak, that might be the best comment ever on this blog! WAD. That's great.

You know, if Hochevar has a good year, he might just blow his WAD. :)

Sorry guys, couldn't resist...
