Almost every time you go off topic, it's one of the best things I've ever read. This time is no exception.

I remember reading that article. It is still one of the best I have ever read and made me a fan. 10 years later and I'm still with you. Great work.

Thanks Rany. Your writing is inspiring, whether Royals or current events.

I'm always fascinated and moved when you write about your faith and current events. Thank God for a country where we live in peace with all sorts of neighbors, each abiding by his conscience!

I hope that we and our children will always maintain the absolute principle that religious views--including atheism--must never be imposed by force. If we agree on this, and vote accordingly, then all the theocrats and bullies of the world cannot do much against us.

Rany, I love you baseball writing. I quibble with your statistics at times. But the best articules you have ever written have nothing to do with baseball.

Let's Go Royals!

Great piece!

As much as the media, and even the government, (Try to answer a census takers race question with "human" and see how many calls you get trying to pin it down.) try to break us up into groups, I think our strength is as a nation of individuals, from many different backgrounds.

As much coverage as they give those who are divisive, I think what most of us have in common is that we hope for good, for ourselves and for others.

I have been a Royals fan since 1980. I was 8 years old then. I caught wind of your blog just a couple of years ago and I love it. I feel it 'keeps me in the loop' on all things Royals. I am currently living and teaching at an American school in Morocco. And I love it here. I have come to love and appreciate the passion, dedication, and peacefulness of the religion of Islams. I hope that someday, everyone can see people for who they are, not their religion. Great article...I, too, am proud to be an American!

Thank you, sir, for making me cry in the best possible way. Would that the media and the public face of our culture could reflect the underlying strengths and tolerances you describe and encapsulate so well.

What if the Royals consider signing Javier Vasquez to a one-year deal?

He's an extreme fly ball pitcher which might play well in Kauffman, which has the 2nd lowest Home Run park factor this season.

Just a dumb thought I had.

I am forwarding this for academic purposes. Always enlightning. So glad we have moved even further since 9-11. We need Americans who love America.

Which begs the question I ask, what is the best way to treat poison ivy?

As a long-suffering Royals fan,I have always appreciated your comments on baseball and the Royals. As an American Christian, I am moved by your 9/11 story. I'm glad that we are free in this country to cheer for own teams and practice our religion. God bless you and your family.

Thanks, Rany. I'm on a business trip to DC, and last night spent an hour taking in the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. The profound sadness of that moment came back to me as I took it in. Then I happened to check your site this morning and your writing served to bring to mind a fact that I take for granted and rarely reflect on. We all experience every moment, even horrible moments, through lenses formed by our upbringing, our beliefs, our past and present circumstances. But we ALL experience a moment like that as humans, and those of us who call this great land home experience it as an American. No matter how different our circumstances, our lenses are in harmony on some very basic, fundamental levels, and thus we all share in the grief of the moment and in the joy of healing together.

I remember reading your article on ESPN.com 10 years ago. It may have been the first article of yours I ever read, in fact. I didn't discover BP until a year or so later.

There were times I wondered how you and your family go along after that took place. I worked for a newspaper myself, and that week, we interviewed a Muslim who was a prominent business-owner in town. His response was that he wasn't familiar with anything in Islam that condoned what happened that day.

This was, as usual, a great article from you. Your great-great-great-great uncle Abd el-Kader would be proud of you.

Rany,

Great article as always. Love reading your blog.

Idea for a future column: what are the Royals going to do with the rotation in 2012? Obviously the remaining weak link, but all of a sudden with Hoch and Duffy and Paulino pitching well, throw in Chen if we keep him...does crow move into the rotation? What about montgomery or Lamb? Mendoza? Are they going to get a couple of pitchers through trades or free agents? SO many options, would love to hear your thoughts. Seems like if we get the rotation figured out we could actually compete for the division next year!
