"The problem is pretty simple: after all these years, the Royals still can’t hit."
Yep, and that might prove to be a problem.

Old guy here.

Things which strike me odd. I was still following the Brew Crew when Ned was playing. Remember being surprised when he was named manager.

Odd, thinking he must have been some type of bench savant. Nope, our leader is reluctantly recognizing modern stats in baseball. Quick, somebody introduce him to Bill James.

Used to Hear chatter like Molitor/Jimmy Gantner (Milwaukee version of Frank White lite) would be a great manager, never Yost.

If anything with his background, the feller should be pulling to get the roster at bats. Nope. Yet, he rides pitchers like 5 buck grey mules. A former catcher too???

His desire for starting pitcher wins goes against his playing time desires one would think as well.

His philosophy should be team wins, spread at bats and innings out, long season. (little known Molitor and Gantner both played themselves into stars)

cough cough David Lough .286, 20 HRs, 79 RBI 15 SBs??? cough cough, Giavotella in the outfield/backup infield is going to come back and haunt us.

Ned was a part timer, always depending on his backup role. or would have been a AA AAA memory to only his immediate family. I'd give my brother's left nut to have Ned's stats...... .212 with 15 doubles, 4 triples, 16 home runs, 64 RBI and 54 runs in 219 games. 6 years in the majors.

But.....

He acts as if Hank A, Mickey, and Nolan were his roomies. Yet, 219 big league games.

Where did this arrogance come from? He is a very poor judge staff, on and off field, with the exception of pitching. Geez, the let Rusty Kuntz leave before begging him back.

My first memories of the importance of a baseball manager was Cubbie lead dawg Leo Durocher.

Love him or hate him, The Lip could and did effect games with strategy.

I honestly can't remember a time, where I really thought, wowzer, Ned pulled some strings to get this win.

Sadly, I can think of many times when I thought, how odd, 4 weak singles, walk/two walks 2 singles and a double, Royals win. Not much managing there.

No faith in Ned, time for a change. Jirschele lame duck it, playoffs then we search.

I think Dayton Moore is morally opposed to hitting the ball hard, kind of like the way the dead ball era guys disdained the new live ball era players like Ruth and Foxx. How many times has Moore extolled a guy who is a complete bum at the plate..see Chris Getz and Jeff Francouer. Yes he finally got rid of both of them but it seems like he thinks having a hard hitting team is somehow unfair, or doing it the wrong way. How else to explain the Royals seeming refusal to get someone who can hit the freaking ball?

It's uncanny how little you actually understand how the game is played. Instead, you just take backhanded swipes at the Royals at every opportunity. Once you hang up the keyboard, the percentage of intelligent writing about the Royals will increase simply by attrition..

I think you mean subtraction. Attrition kind of works, but is more closely associated with weakening or wearing down or exhausting, even in the sense you use it, as in retirement or industry loss, see, e.g., "the rate of attrition among public defenders is high". Again, I say it kind of works because Rany is "retiring" from the ranks of Royals bloggers, but I still think you want subtraction here, as attrition means more than a simple reduction, and "addition by subtraction" is a common phrase, which then calls to mind your deviation and forces a reckoning with the slight change in meaning.

Also, I disagree.

Oh crap! The calendar has switched to May. This has not been good thus far. Am having PTSD remembering last May. And the May before that. And the May before that...

National story has Moose going to Omaha Tuesday. Hopefully it turns out like Gordon's situation....Just as we hoped Duffy would go the way of Greinke after his sabbatical. Every passing day makes Dayton's #1 picks look like embarrassing swings and misses. That or pathetic development within organization.
Either way I don't think Dayton and Ned will be around to ever see Royals really make the World Series. They may have helped improve the environment and organization as a whole. Just don't seem to be able to go to that next level.

Brett Hayes batting .000, and George Kottaras is outrighted to Columbus. "Orioles looking for catcher" and don't pick up Kottaras.
