Please stop with calling him the baseball jonah. It's too clever to be good.

Well, after dominating the Twins 8-1 tonight, the Royals have done all but legitimize this September surge.

Davies has looked like a legitimate #3 starter this month and I see no reason to not hand him that spot next Spring. That leaves Hochever, Bannister, Rosa and company to battle for the back-end of the rotation. I really like where our pitching is headed.

Now just to figure out what to do with The Hawaiian Punch (my nickname for Ka'aihue) and Shealy. You have to give credit where credit is due, but I think Shealy's age and mediocre track record should do him in eventually.

If Greinke is the "Baseball Jonah," is Chad Johnson the "Football Ocho Cincho?"

Shealy isn't a major league first baseman. He's just not. I've seen him play for three innings this year. He just don't look like a Player. I know that's stupid and anti-thetical to common sense, but I've seen a lot of baseball (like most of us)...Take his long mediocre career, I just don't see how he's the answer at first.

Teahen, btw, got two hits and a walk in LEFT FIELD tonight.

The Twins struck out thirteen times tonight. Tight much?

Regarding our record this month and who it has been achieved against, I'd like to mention that we are 7-7 against the Sox, Twins, and Indians. That's not that bad.

Davies has been impressive this month. He has changed things around a little bit and it seems to be working for him. His main problem in the past has been consistency and I don't know if this Sept run is for real or not. If he can take this month into next year then I will be very pleased. Up until this point I have thought him to be destined for the bullpen. He sure has pitched well this month. I can't deny that.

Davies used to be a bad pitcher. He had talent, but couldn't harness it. Now he is not a bad pitcher, but he isn't good either. I think he's probably not even as good as average. But I think he's the kind of guy who can ably handle the #4 starter spot and the kind of guy who you would be overjoyed to have as your fifth best starter. I would have 4 locks for next year's rotation:

Greinke
Meche
Hochevar
Bannister (one very good year and one bad year means he deserves another full season to determine how good he really is)

That means Rosa and Davies competing for the fifth spot. Rosa also has good stuff and better control than Davies. If Davies doesn't make the rotation, then he can be a great long reliever or maybe even a setup man. And every team needs to be able to go 6 or 7 deep with starting pitchers because some starters always end up failing or getting injured. Having someone like Davies to step in and make starts is a great asset.

Wow... 3 innings to judge that Shealy doesn't look like a ballplayer? He sure looks like one to me. Good size and enough mobility to have some range at 1B. His defense is above average and he has hit well enough that you have to give severe consideration to the theory that his troubles last year came from being injured.

Just for the record, and because you seem short on reassurance: I _like_ the nickname "Baseball Jonah" (it's my favorite Royals nickname so far, actually). I also like the player, and hope the Royals keep him.

Ryan Shealy at one time tied Kevin Youklous for error less innings at first base. I realize this says nothing about his range but it does say that hes got good hands. As of this writing Shealy has 162 career games played. One full season. His numbers are 19 hrs 92 rbis and a 765 ops. I think those numbers are fine for a first baseman. They pay Guillen 13 millon a year to put a up similar numbers. I think he is a nice upgrade over Gload. I not much of a stat guy but I would like to see how many win shares each first baseman canidates for next year brings the royals. Thanks

I have never looked at Davies very highly but what I have seen this month is nothing like I have seen before. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. His control has improved immensely. He has been going farther into games and not imploding before 100 pitches. If he can continue this because it is due to his new way of approaching things, then he is for sure on the staff and probably as high as #3 depending on who we pick up in the off season. I think he can be better than simply a #4 or 5 guy but I don't think by too much. Having him as an average to above average guy in the rotation would be huge though.

Shealy has always had a good glove. I don't think anyone questioned that. His problem is his age and the numbers he put up in AAA for a whole year before he got here. At 29 he should be putting up better numbers in AAA to make a difference at the major league level. He hit .280 in Omaha and that doesn't equal much in KC. He's had a great month but I'm not holding my breath for next year. That's alright though because we have Kila waiting for the Royals to figure out that Shealy isn't the answer.

I'm as encouraged as anyone by the Davies resurgence, but "hand him" the #3 rotation spot next spring? Because he's strung together three good starts? I think you're pushing it there. I hope Davies really is turning a corner here, but I'm certainly not prepared to declare that he's there. Baseball is a quirky game and just about anyone can impersonate a Cy Young candidate for three games (well, okay, except for Scott Elarton). It doesn't seem to me that there's ever been any question about Davies' stuff, but he's just never been able to keep it together consistently. He's done it for three starts, but...it's just three starts. I've got to see more before I'm ready to say that Davies is for real. If he ends up being the best candidate for a spot in the rotation next year, whether because of injuries or whatever else, then all right, but I'm not quite sure it's time yet to pencil him in as a definite #3 behind Greinke and Meche.
