Pretty astute comments. If any of the Tigers fall off slightly - Cabrera's invevitable fielding woes dampen his bat, Fielder has a hard time adjusting to the AL, Verlander is just a notch below last year - it will be fun watching Detroit be crucified. Meanwhile fun teams like the Royals and Indians who have little expectations might enjoy sticking it to Detroit as the season wears on. (I know I'd enjoy watching that.) The Tigers do have weaknesses - depth in starting pitching, minor league depth, and, ahem, defense. This financial commitment will hamstring them for years. I hope Tigers fans will enjoy Fielder in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th year of that contract and the likely spring training stories of how hard Prince worked to lower his weight while rehabbing the injuries to come.

Fielder's contract is a good example of why you have to develop your own offensive studs. I would never have thought that anyone would commit 9 years to him but there always seems to be at least one owner who is willing. I knew he would get 5, I thought it could be 7, or maybe, if the bidding got really hot and heavy, 8.

I suppose that, long term, we should be glad that, in this age of guaranteed contracts, teams will make deals that will someday hamstring them.

To be honest, until the Royals show a real desire to address their starting pitching, it doesn't really matter what moves other teams make. If we go into the season with our current starting pitching staff, we have taken ourselves out of the race, anyway.

This move is going to kill the Tigers long term. Fielder might be good for a few more years, but his body is going to break down very fast at his size. He needs to lose a ton of weight, which will probably diminish his power. I still can't believe the Tigers gave him 9 years when there seemed to be very little market for him. Moving Miggy to 3rd should be hilarious. Everyone on the club needs to work on bunting during spring training.

To me this doesn't change anything for my outlook on the Royals. Mission 2012 calls for the Royals to contend for the division, they don't need to win it. Contending and playing over 500 baseball is the next step.

I don't expect Glass and the Royals to go spend $200 million but is it too much to ask to get Gordon (who has said repeatedly that he want to sign) re-signed to a long term deal?

I'm nervous about 2012 for reasons that have nothing to do with Fielder. It seems likely Gordon and Frenchy will regress slightly, and our cf production is almost certain to be down. this will likely wash out any Moose and Hosmer offensive improvement. And at this point our starting pitching is only marginally better. So, 2012 could look a lot like 2011, which would be profoundly discouraging. I actually think our best hope (aside from a major starting pitcher aquisition) is a break out year from Billy Butler--which is a real possibility.

If Fielder has five good years before falling off the table and the Tigers win one World Series don't you think they will be happy to eat the remainder of his contract??

No gimme winning a WS, but if that was the scenario don't you think the Tigers would be thrilled with that??

Best perspective on Fielder that I've seen in a while. A few weeks ago, I commented on an article where someone said that Fielder was a better long-term signing than Albert Pujols because he's four years younger. I said that Pujols would still be playing in the major leagues after Fielder had eaten himself out of baseball.

ZIPS and CAIRO project the Royals to be somewhere in the mid to upper 70s for wins. Unless there is a miracle, the Royals are not contending this year anyway.

Until GMDM improves the SP and wisely allocates FA resources what Detroit does is a moot point.

I don't think this really hurts the Royals that much. Everyone seems to be conceding the division to the Tigers just like they did for the Red Sox last year. The Tigers defense will be absolutely brutal. I think the Royals will be right with the Tigers all year.

if you plaster the distance in HR form last year to Detroits park.. he would hit 10 less at home alone

After running some numbers, I dont think the Royals should go above a 5 year , 50-55 million dollar extension with Gordon. We've gotten one great year and 3 dismal years from him so far. Here's my yearly breakdown on a deal that makes see for both sides...

Year 1-5 mill
2-8 mill
3-12.5 mill
4-12.5 mill
5-12.5 mill

Total-50.5 mill over 5 years.
