Completely agree about Moose. I've worried about where he will play not only defensively but offensively. It makes way too much sense to move him behind the plate...thus the Royals will never even think about it...sad

didn't the royals used to make pitchers shelve their sliders and throw curveballs to save arm strain? i think that's why we NEVER have arm issues :)

Rany,

Do you think Montgomery should be allowed to keep his "weird palm curve ball," or do you (and the scouts you know) agree with the Royals that it won't baffle major leaguers?

Blogger Shelby said...

I'm guessing the "weird palm curve" has a more gradual break than the more typical, sudden break, which could lead to a slightly-quicker recognition on the part of the batter.

It's articles like this that I started reading this blog in the first place. Thanks for an insightful read for a Royals fan. Pretty soon we will have 7 months for people to be negative again.

This organization has hired and surrounded itself by descrimination against those who don't take Jesus Christ as their personal savior. I've been watching this team for all of my life. Since the takeover by David Glass he has made it his personal goal to only hire and sign players that are over the top christians. Not that I have a problem with the religion... it just becomes an issue when tax payer money sponsers the building of a new stadium when the goal of the organization is to promote christianity. Take this as example:

Repent! Another Kansas City Holy Royals season is around the bend. Led by our Christ fearing coach:

Notice the "Better Dads, Stronger Sons" title sitting on this desk?

If you want to play for the Royals you have to take Jesus as your personal savior. We've had a long line of similiar players... Take Mike Sweeney who openly was trying to take out stem cell research in Missouri. Why doesn't this get called out? You want to ask why Kansas City doesn't sign top free-agents? Because they force pre-game prayer. If you are not in the Jesus club you won't start.... and won't be part of the team.

I guess you're saying the reason why they booted Rany from player access is because he's a muslim and not christian.

I think you need to lighten up there dude.

Wow. I think that's the first time I've heard a religious (or anti-religious?) zealot comment on this blog. Funny stuff!

Rany-Excellent article, although before the addendum I do take opposition to your stance that they don't think outside the box, etc. It comes off sounding like you're mad because they don't take your outside the box idea (although they apparently did try).

Me being a lefty, I'm really excited to see Montgomery whenever he comes up. I just hope they don't rush him a la Allard Baird.

Rany Sir,
I'm glad to be reading your posts again now that baseball starts in around a month. Its been a long, long winter. I noticed that you seem to have a few decent connections inside the organization. I'd be very interested in knowing what the Royals are doing to ensure that 1. Moustakas learns to use the entire field and 2. Learns some plate discipline. I have a friend that scouts for the Twins, he's seen Moustakas more than a few times scouting the minor leagues and he says its pretty clear to him that, for some reason, Moustakas has been convinced that his job is adding power numbers for the Royals at any cost, even if at the cost of becoming a complete hitter thats a threat to all 3 fields. There are few players around that have the top hand Mous has. He's the anti-Alex Gordon in that he can wait back on pitches and still get the barrel of the bat into the zone on time, but for some reason he can't be convinced to wait on the ball. I've seen him in batting practice when he's sprayed hard hit line-drives foul, again and again, down the right field line. Its a tragic waste.

Secondly, I want to know what you and other think about Wil Myers. The kid is a hitter, thats easy to see. But isn't it also as easy to see that he's not a great defensive catcher? Royalscorner have Myers rated as their top catching prospect in the system but he's not listed in the top 3 in their defensive catching break-downs of blocking and receiving. Their rankings are as follows (this particular article is free to everyone so I feel fine reposting)

Best Arm:
1. Myers
2. Bonilla
3. Perez
Best Receiver:
1. Pina
2. Perez
3. McCauley
Best Overall Defense:
1. Pina
2. Perez
3. McCauley

Best Hitter:
1. Myers
2. Perez
3. Bonilla

Best Raw Power:
1. Myers
2. Bonilla
3. Jin-Ho

Most Athletic:
1. Myers
2. Cruz
3. Eigsti

It seems to me that Salvador Perez is the class of the system at that position, even though I know Myers is an extremely good hitter, hitting is just one aspect of a catcher, and catching is usually pretty bad on hitters numbers (we can't all be Joe Mauers and Piazzas). What are they projecting from a defensive standpoint and are they thinking about moving Myers to the outfield? With his game and athleticism he seems to the the prototypical left fielder. His bat will play anywhere. Any info on the above is welcome.

5'11" and 230? Perhaps "Moose" thought he should live up to his nickname and become as big as a moose. Yeesh.

Brosiusjb-Myers is relatively new to catching. He didn't catch a whole lot in high school, so he's still getting used to the position. Give him a year or so and then lets see how he is defensively.

We can only hope Moose gets with the program. The Royals system is so vapor thin on position prospects we can't afford to have wasted a very high draft pick on one.

What's wrong with Danny Duffy as a prospect? I was under the impression that the only reason the Royals were able to draft him as low as they did (2nd round, maybe--it was a few years ago now) was because he was coming off an injury at the time. Wasn't he the left hander who got like 18 K/9 in a short first stint in pro-ball?

How does that not equate to "having stuff"?

Ok... so maybe I was a little off the wall. Kansas City will never sign a top free agent or keep a star player with any sort of regularity. All I'm saying is that the head office are a bunch of religious zealots... they hire coaches that also are zealots. I'd hate to be in the clubhouse. If you don't go to church on sunday you're not in the club. Who wants to come play for a team like that? Who would want to stick around for less money and work under those circumstances? The worst part of it is that we as tax payers are footing the bill.

way to much ink on mike moustakas. would have preferred rany opinions on
1. why and conceptually how this player was drafted by the royals, and
2. what M's conditioning or lack thereof says about the Royals development program and minor league conditioning. is it safe to say, along with other concerns, while they may have state of the art weight rooms in the minors (Dayon Moore interview), they don't use them.

You know what's funny? I don't think there are that many people who actually care what religion any player has, as long as that player hits/fields/pitches/runs well.

can't believe i am commenting on this, but i do think the royals try really hard to put themselves out there as good ol' fashion midwestern christian family values type people... although without sweeney it's been less visible/vocal. anyway, i think it's probably more market oriented than actual evangelizing.

I understand not wanting to force an unwanted position on a player, but at what point does the organization have to say "this is what we need. this is how you make it." He doesn't really project as a 3rd baseman, at least not his size. And we really don't need another .250 corner outfielder.

Ron Cey was 5'10"? Maybe if they measured him with his cap on because there was a good three inches between the top of his head the the top of his cap.

They should just throw some money at Moose. Hey kid, heres a million bucks- go be a catcher. Problem solved. Then Myers moves to the OF, and everything is good.

Moustakas is making a mistake by not moving to catcher. His career would last much longer. Ask Jamie Quirk. And as Rany mentioned, Moustakas would be quite valuable as a good hitting catcher from the left side. I'm surprised Boras doesn't see that, too, and isn't pushing for it, as well--they'd all make a lot more money in the long run.

And if the Royals were willing to help him develop into that, I'd imagine they'd also be willing to have more patience with his overall development, in the mean time. His lack of willingness to move is worrisome, as well, and would be a red flag in terms of his commitment to the betterment of the organization.

Funny, the Baltimore Orioles aren't trying to figure out where to play Matt Weiters (nor did Brian Matusz have to have Lasik surgery. he-he).
