Rany, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate these looks at the Royals farm system. Thanks for the analysis and insight. And, thanks for the slight improvement in frequency of postings!

I am beginning to think of the Royals major league club as a more competitive bunch lately, too. Although, it remains depressing to see a team get 3 runs on 12 hits every night...

C'mon Rany, you keep talking good about these players that were drafted by Satan himself (a.k.a. Dayton Moore), and people might think you like some of the things he's doing! And by golly, that's just not right!

*tongue firmly in cheek*

Rany;

I take it you have never been to Frawley Stadium because "beautiful ballpark" is a real stretch. It's a decent facility for that level. Not a beautiful location either. Better than a lot of A parks I will give it that.

"To end this tortured and overly-drawn out metaphor before it spins completely out of control..."

Too late.

Seriously, though, another great analysis. Love your work.

Let's spend this currency on position players! You mentioned Giavatella, which pitchers should be flipped for other pieces in your opinion?

Great stuff, as always. And I'm glad to let you do the work of finding names to watch in the minors, Rany.

I'm in Baltimore for the summer and am going to catch a few Blue Rocks games over the next month or two. And like I just said, I now have a great list of names to follow (along with our newly signed first-round pick).

Why is Wilmington a pitcher's park? Can't you move the fences in a bit to even it out between hitters/pitchers?

Nice work Rany, another terrific read...

But you may have to update this latest column in a couple of days as there is good reason to believe Wil Myers shall be reporting to Wilmington in the coming days...

"Why is Wilmington a pitcher's park?"

Being located due west of a river probably doesn't help things. That, and the LCF seems huge.

Rany: Great work - thanks for the minor league updates. FYI - Josh Outman finished his college career at the University of Central Missouri (home of the Fighting Mules) in Warrensburg MO, just 50 minutes SE of KC. The Mules are a perennial baseball power in D-II, and should not be ignored when looking for "local" talent.

Rany, love your blog and tweets, dont know if you read these comments, was at the K tonight and not sure if this has been his walk up song all year, but Wilson Betemit came up to, Betterman by Pearl Jam. Take a second and sing that in your head, get it? Pretty funny and creative I thought, not to mention he is actually hitting the ball and more than singles power, glad the Royals are taking advantage while it lasts.

I live less that half an hour from the Blue Rocks stadium, named for local Hall of Famer Judy Johnson. The only bad things that I can think of about the park are that the sun is nasty if you sit on the first base side of evening games and the fences are a tad deep. It may also be the most expensive place to eat in Delaware.

But, great sitelines, being close to the action, and Robin Roberts name on the outfield fence make it all better.

All of you haters owe me an apology when the Royals go 120-42 in 2014 and win the World Series! Look out Red Rags, Gays and Wankees, Strangers and Twinkies, I'm quietly plotting the destruction of all of you!

Rany- nobody here has forgotten your Benedict Arnold, spineless cowardice. I hope you look in the mirror and realize what a turncoat mother f@cker you have become. You deserve to be kicked in the balls.

I guess since we have a couple prospects, Ranys Daddy Dayton is a great GM? Nevermind yet another lost season.....

Rany- retire. Stop polluting the web with your crap.

Why do people insist on reading stuff they don't like, and then bitch about it in the comments section? Life's too short. Why get all steamed about someone's opinion? Just because you don't agree, doesn't make them wrong.

Yes it does. Rany is a turn coat traitorous snake.

July 2, 2010 at 1:51 PM

Blogger Michael said...

Yes it does make him a good GM. It's what he's supposed to do, turn the entire organization around. And he's doing it from the bottom (the minor leagues) up. It's paying great dividends in the minors right now, and will in the next couple of years in the majors as well.

I still go back to the example of the Twins. It took 7 years under Terry Ryan of building up the organization through the minor leagues before he even had one winning season. Now, because of that work (and the continuing work under Bill Smith), they are contenders year in and year out.

The reason the Royals were good back in the 70's and 80's was because of mostly home grown talent. That's how you win, especially in small market baseball. We aren't going to win by adding pieces via the free agent market, that's for sure.

So yes, considering what was handed to Dayton 4 years ago to what he has today, he has been a pretty good GM.

Blogger Nathan said...

I agree with the consensus here; the Royals have much more talent, a brighter future, and even a better MLB team than they had four years ago. By any reasonable standard, Moore--though he has his flaws--is doing well so far.

I know some people will answer that the Royals of four years ago had nowhere to go but up. That is true. But it cuts both ways. You can't hand someone an organizational disaster and demand that they create a perennial contender within four years. It just couldn't be done. That the major league team still sucks is even comforting, in a way, because it means Moore has been building up a team designed to last, not a flash-in-the-pan inclined quick fix.

Dayton Moore ML acquisitions. Judge for yourself:
Bloomquist
Gloat
TPJ
Ponson
Hillman
Owen
Kendall
Mendoza
Bale
Wright
Betancourt
Freel
Anderson
Anderson
Ankiel
Fields
Getz
Horam
Davies
Crisp
Jacobs

Got rid of: Buck, Olivo, Affeldt, Delarosa, Nunez, Ramirez.

I'm sure I'm missing some. Not to mention the contracts given to these scrubs. Point is, minor leaguers will only help so much and DM shows zero ability to evaluate major League talent.

Maybe we should hold off on the parade and Dayton Moore HOF candidancy for the time being..........

July 4, 2010 at 4:10 PM

Blogger Michael said...

No one is saying he's a Hall of Famer. And it's not like he's been given a ton of credit for the major league roster either.

But name one "bad contract" that is on the books for 2012, when a lot of these kids will be up with the major league team. There isn't one. But until these kids are ready, someone has to play for the major league team. If not, then we go back to the Allard Baird days of rushing everyone to the big league team before they are ready, and ruining them.

Give it time, and his approach is going to pay dividends in the long run.

Before this decade is up, this team will be in the playoffs, and it will be with mostly Dayton Moore drafted players. Considering it's been 25 years since our last playoff game, that's a feat worthy of praise.

He is a crap GM- time will tell but his moves at the ML ain't gonna just get better all the sudden. 4 years of turds ant getting polished anytime soon. This team will never win with DM as GM. Period.

July 4, 2010 at 11:57 PM

Blogger Nathan said...

Anonymous, your list is not complete. Also, most of the acquisitions you list are minor. There have been some bad moves. But you're nowhere near objective about it.

Name one impact free agent the Twins have picked up in the last 7 or 8 years. Not many, that's for sure. You can win without signing big money free agents, as Minnesota has proven.

Rany, I just read in the Star that Yost believes we can win the division, after all, we are only 8 games out. Is he delusional or should I dust off my "we believe" t-shirt?

Personally, I think 8 games out with 3 teams ahead of us is pretty much a pipe dream but I'd like to know if we should start believing again. Is this just Yost being Mr Positive to get his manager gig full time, or do you think he actually believes it?

July 6, 2010 at 1:18 AM

It's got to be impossible. There is no way that a team assembled by Dayton Moore could ever be a contender!

Seriously now, while it's not impossible, it would be a pretty incredible feat to pull off.

July 6, 2010 at 8:10 AM

Blogger Nathan said...

I agree with Michael. It's not impossible--almost any team can get hot for half a season--but I wouldn't expect a run on dust-busters, either. I suppose you can dream on a combination of Gordon and Kila being promoted and staying hot, while Greinke goes nuts again on the mound, Butler discovers his home run power, and DeJesus' career year continues. That's a lot of ifs. But not impossible.
