Great column, especially enlightening on Santana's utter unpredictability. The 25 player review was a fan's feast, and a superb way to get primed for the season.

On the other hand, it is depressing to have the first comment arrive in the form of a pointless nastygram. Rany, rest assured there are many readers who appreciate you enormously.

Ben, if this is an example of your best vocabulary and expository skills, you should probably start paying that $10 per month after all.

Thanks for the article Rany, look forward to seeing more of your work in the Star.

Interesting read, especially on Hosmer and Santana. I'm optimistic on both. 88 Wins and a WC win.

Congrats on the Star piece, and hopefully there's more of that in your future.
I know the paper has struggled and lost a lot of valuable writers, but they really have very good Royals coverage. Mellinger "gets it", and Dutton is a very good beat writer.
Even Lee Judge's blog provides a unique angle that you just don't find many places. Yes, you have former baseball player "wisdom" on ESPN or MLB Network, but the tidbits he picks up from the players about in-game strategy give us some perspective we don't find anywhere else. While I, and I think most of us, didn't like Polk Points, I appreciate what he does bring. It's pretty well-rounded coverage. Bringing you on board is icing.

There’s this perception around the game that right field is Francoeur’s job this year come hell or high water, that Dayton Moore loves Frenchy so much that he’s willing to overlook all his weaknesses. I think that’s a somewhat naïve and even cynical view of the situation. (Yes, I know – me calling out cynicism. Pot, meet kettle.)

You’re not calling out cynicism – you’re one of the main people perpetuating that myth!

The Royals are quite aware that Francoeur was a terrible, rotten, no-good hitter last year. (I’m not sure they realize just how bad he was defensively, though.)

Right, because you’re WAY smarter than the people that do this for a living. You can recognize it between patient visits, but the people watching this day in and day out are completely blind. It’s this “smarter than the professionals” attitude that completely clouds your judgment.

I’m referring to the fact that the Royals are making noises about using Eric Hosmer in right field during interleague play as a way to keep both Hosmer and Billy Butler in the lineup.

They already fuckin did that, and if it wasn’t telling last year, it’s not telling this year either.

“Better still, he might get me to shut up about the loss of Wil Myers all season long.”

I know, that high-strikeout rookie that would have been called up a month or two into the season would have made all of the difference in the world..

“While they haven’t agreed on a single formula, they did agree on a single, unified definition of “replacement level”. “

And they’ll continue to keep changing shit forever, so that 10 years from now, we can take completely contrary positions to what we’re saying now, but be like, “Well, the numbers back then weren’t as advanced as now. I mean, my opinion back then was based on what the crappy numbers said, and my opinion now is based on what the crappy numbers say, so I clearly can’ be wrong at any time ever. Even if I never actually have my own opinion..”

“ I’m not making any predictions, but I will just say: Hosmer is just 23 years old. “

“I don’t like to make predictions because I’m wrong almost all of the time.”

Yes, unknown, because these so called professionals are always right. They've never made a mistake so we should just trust their judgment and not form our own opinions.

to unknown (defensively anonymous?)

smarter than the professionals? Oh yes!! That is the whole point of fans discussing, second guessing, making predictions, everything about the whole blog atmosphere that we love so much. But unlike you, Rany puts his rational reasons out there for us to pick over. Part of the reason he has such a great following is because he has actually proven to be "smarter than the professionals" who run the Royals. Go Rany!

Guesses for unknowns identity

1.) A sad lonely man living in his mother's basement

2.) A religious bigot who hates a Muslim being smarter than him

3.) The scout Brad Pitt fired in Moneyball trying to get a job interview by proving holding onto the old way is always right.

Vote early, vote often.

I'll go with another possibility. DrThunder on Royalboard hates Rany with a passion. Don't know why. It's quite entertaining and disturbing all at once.

Remember Unknown, these people who run the Royals believe that they see SOMETHING in Hochevar when a large majority of us have wanted him dumped for about three years. So yes, its quite possible for people on the outside to know more about some things when it comes to baseball. Like not bunting early in the game. Another thing the Royals somehow believe in.
