I have always said that in order for a team like the Royals or the Pirates or the Rays in 2008 to succeed, a few things have to fall their way. They got one of those things in the great pitching for a majority of the season. The Royals, being the Royals, have to find a way to make up for that and they have quite well. Herrera is in the minors, Moose was below the Mendoza for the majority of the first half, Butler is hitting very poorly compared to last year or pretty much any other year in his career. Hosmer was awful until about mid way through June. Guthrie is giving up the most or second most HRs he has ever given up despite pitching at the K as opposed to Camden Yards.

As usual, the Royals can't put everything together at the same time. The minute the offense started to show some light, the pitching started to regress. The hitting has now cooled off and the pitching continues to regress. Overall, this is the most disappointing season I have endured as a long time Royals fan.

You can call for Moore's job, Rany. After all, all your readers are.

Not calling for Moore's job is ridiculous. Both and he and Yost should be gone. Their incompetence is nauseating.

Danny Duffy struck out 12 in 5 innings for NW Arkansas last night (I listened to the game). He could replace Santana in the rotation.

You quote the common wisdom to never trade within your own division -- but it hits me that it might not be a bad idea for a rental player. What do you really care how the Indians do this year? We've already made the case that we can't reach the playoffs this year. So why not take some of their better prospects for a guy that'll be off their team after the end of the year?

the problem is I don't trust this front office to make the right trade deadline moves, if they make any. And maybe DM needs to have a winning record (or close to it) to save his job.

It doesn't matter what the Royals do. Pick a course of action and then watch it all go horribly wrong. So what if you beef up the pitching. Gordon, Butler, Perez will not quite produce as before, Hosmer will become a singles hitter, and Moose, Escobar and Gio will just crater.

For a know nothing imbecile, this analysis is spot on. Santana is a no brainer, and Holland should be dealt as he is the only other player who can bring a good return. The real question is whether we can trust Moore to make these deals. That is a scary thing to contemplate with an asset as valuable as Holland.

David Lough is doing about the same as Wil Myers. So Wil Myers would not have made much difference - at least this year.

You're not getting Joc for a rental, even if you do throw Holland into the deal. Kasten has already told Ned that he's not to trade any top prospects for a rental. No more Carlos Santana for Casey Blake, no more James McDonald and Andrew Lambo for Octavio Dotel. We got Nolasco for three future minor leaguers with middle reliever ceilings. Also, ALL YOUR CUBAN FREE AGENTS ARE BELONG TO US.

I don't believe the Royals can be winners with either Moore or Yost, much less the both of them. Moore deserves to be fired for his 2 choices of managers alone, 3 if you count not getting rid of Buddy Bell after his (Moore's)partial first season. Yost is a terrible manager and inspires nothing in the players. A 5 game losing streak going into the break is completely unacceptable.

Rany: One of the owners of Sporting KC stated that they would not contact David Glass about buying the Royals out of respect for him and what he's done for Kansas City. BUT, if he made the first move (contacted them) they would be interested. Given their success and roots in KC, should we (the fans) and the city as a whole take that as a cue to start flying banners over The K with Cerner's phone number emblazened on it? Perhaps their email addresses? Their home mailing address? Their LinkedIn profiles? Facebook pages? MySpace? Hell, he could send them a telegram and I'd be happy.

Kyle Zimmer is debuting for NW Arkansas Saturday evening. I have tickets for the game. I will attempt to post a report afterwards. He may well be in the 2015 rotation. The Royals farm system suddenly seems thin, Zimmer is one of the few real good prospects.

I've read you on Grantland and I think I'll start coming to this website more. Loved this article. As someone has already said, the Royals can't seem to put everything together at the same time. In that respect, Moore is unlucky, but he needs to be out soon. It would also be nice if we could get a new owner but that's wishful thinking.

If the Royals sweep the Tigers this weekend, will that change the analysis? This offense has to be better in the 2nd half.

I get what Rany's saying, I really do. Heck, I agree with him. But there's a part of me--the non-sabremetic part--for whom it doesn't sit well to go all in for a total of three months, only to turn around sell off all your sellable assets for yet another stockpile of prospects for yet another far-off future date when the Royals might contend, and in the meantime pretty much totally punt on 2013.

Kyle Zimmer pitched 6 shutout innings, striking out 7, for NW Arkansas last night. He threw 86 pitches, 56 for strikes. Walked one and allowed 3 hits. Throws hard and looks really good. My guess is he starts 2014 at Omaha and goes to KC sometime during season if needed.

Given what Texas just surrendered for Garza, and the continued interest among playoff caliber teams in acquiring pitching help, it almost seems impossible for DM to spin a non-trade of Santana as anything other than a failure, and a hubristic ne at that.

This, and also the recent suspension of Ryan Braun, have me eagerly awaiting next week's podcast.

Why would Moore trade away assets that can help him keep his job this year for assets that will help his successor?

Isn't the percentage play for Moore to hold and hope the team ends up at .500 so he can squeeze another year or two of employment out of this? (Hell, should he be buying?)

"...[S]o long as Ned Colletti, the man who once traded Carlos Santana for Casey Blake, is in charge in LA, the Dodgers are a mark."

Way out of context.

Yes, he did that. It... argh.

However. Consider the last couple trades he has made.

- a hard throwing rookie (Eovaldi) and some middling prospects for Hanley Ramirez and his contract. 1 year later, 4.7 WAR for $15.1M. That is about half the going market price for a win. At the time of the trade it looked like a coin-flip as to whether Hanley would ever again be even above-average offensively, but given the dearth of available alternatives - darn good trade.

- Adrian Gonzalez/Carl Crawford/Josh Beckett - turned out somewhat better than it could have due to Crawford's resurgence, however, consider that Beckett may never throw another pitch for LA. Again, dearth of available alternatives, and even a past-prime Gonzalez is a massive upgrade over James Loney. Losing Rubby de la Rosa hurts, but the other "prospects" sent to Boston probably won't do much. Again, not a horrible trade.

So... context. Did Coletti get a brain transplant? No. Ownership. Coletti will never be a SABR darling. But he's not Dayton Moore and is no longer dealing with an owner who regularly loots the club to pay for mansions so the opportunity cost for mistakes has plummeted.

And then there's that losing Santana was really because McCourt didn't want to pay Blake's salary.
