Hard not to be optimistic about what the Royals have one on contracts. Now, they need to get some pitching.

Great article - awesome to see how few guys we don't have control of through 2015.

One small misprint: "Hosmer’s going to make about $1 million over the next six years combined" - I think you mean 2 years.

As happy as I am that the Royals appear to be doing some of the bigger things correctly, I won't be happy until the Royals are actually contending. I know we have been starved for winning at the "K", but in order to truly contend, the Royals need to do EVERYTHING right.

AS Royals fans we should not settle for "don't suck like we used to", we should demand sustained playoff contention

8/80 is way too much. At a certain point, you're just taking on risk without securing a bargain. Better to just enjoy the pre-FA years of control and do what you can to win the eventual FA bidding.

Great article, but I think everyone is premature on the Hosmer extension. Even including the player option year, Gordon can be a free agent before Hosmer.

I'd offer Hosmer up to $100M for 8yrs.

The way things are setting up is almost perfect with regards to position players advancing through the minor leagues to replace key players:

Sometime next season, the Royals will either trade Francouer OR reduce his role to make room for Wil Myers in the outfield.

In 2015, let's say that Gordon and Butler are both off the roster. Well let's see - Chelsor Cuthbert should be ready to play 3rd full time and move Moustakas over to DH (in fact the "DH position could be a committee at that point with Hosmer, Moose, and Cuthbert each seeing time there, though I would suspect Moose would log the most innings there). Also Bubba will hopefully be ready to patrol CF and move Cain to a corner position. That's 2 more league-minimum salary players.

I'm a firm believer the Royals payroll should be average around $85M with OCCAIONAL single season forays to $95M.

Need to get a good pitcher in the offseason too, though.

I love your blog, but you need a new theme. Your content is only 438 pixels wide, which is very accommodating in the 800x600 CRT era. I'd love to see you format a bit more with headings, etc. so it's easier to read.

Regardless, content is king and you have plenty of it.

Don't bite my head off here, but isn't first base the easiest position to find a productive player? I realize that Hos could be a great player, but I am really not worried about his being signed.

Pitching is the key. This year, we seem to have a great bullpen and mediocare starting pitching. Can a team win with that formula? Has any recent team won that way? I seem to remember the Twins winning with pretty average pitching over the last five years and maybe even the White Sox in their big year. So, maybe.
