The Royals do have a golden opportunity here. I'd say shelve the two year deal and go for 3. We have the upper hand, lets see how far we can go with it.

I also agree about letting Broxton close, for many reasons. 1) He's done it before, and been quite effective at it. 2) Like you said, I'd rather have my best reliever in the 7th with a tie game and a runner on 2nd with no outs than in the 9th with no one on and a 3 run lead. 3) It does also keep Holland's future salaries down, which makes this team more affordable and a Hosmer or Moustakas extension more viable.

I still doubt either of them sign long term with Boras as their agent, but at least it wouldn't be because we weren't offering the money.

Interesting ESPN article on Tommy John surgery:

Sign Soria, and trade him.

And I agree about letting Broxton close. I *hated* watching Soria sit when the team was in a jam in the 4th inning, hoping we could limp to the 9th with a lead. Let Broxton have the glory while others do the dirty work.

Plus, if Broxton is looking good, he might be good trade bait. I know we're moving past the "trade for prospects" stage, but Broxton only has a 1 year deal, closers are overvalued in the market, and we have a stable of quality relievers already.

Between Soria and Broxton, it'd be nice to nab at least one quality infielder. Our current situation (*cough*Yuni*cough*) highlights how shallow we are at 2B, SS, & 3B.

I am hopeful the Royals can work something out with Soria and he can stay with the team.

While the numbers say it would be beneficial to bring in the closer earlier in the game, there is something psychological about having the closer saved for the 9th. Closer never seem to perform as well when they are brought in the 6th or 7th, and chances are good the game will still be close in the 9th. I try to look at it objectively, but I just prefer the 9th inning closer.

Yeah, but when is having a psychological edge more advantageous? When a team is rallying in a close game and just knocked out your starter? Or at the start of an inning when there's nobody on base?

Of course, they're both useful, but I'd much rather use my best reliever as a Fireman-- send him in to put out the fire and save the lead. Then you hype up your second-best reliever as the Door Closer.

I have a feeling that teams will soon come around to the idea of a dedicated Fireman. I hope the Royals do, that's for sure.

Rany, you say that we have only one spot left for the following guys: Teaford, Hottovy, Jeffress, Collins, Herrera. The Royals will be carrying 7 guys in the bullpen, and we are pretty sure the following guys are in:

Mijares
Crow
Holland
Broxton

Add to this list Paulino (I think Mendoza will make the rotation), and that's five. I count *two* spots left for your list. Who am I missing here? I think Herrera and Collins are in.

Organizational depth at 2B doesn't appear to be very good. Here is a list, excluding the 2 rookie leagues:

Majors:
1. Chris Getz
2. Yuniesky Betancourt

Omaha:
1. Johnny Giavotella
2. Tony Abreu
3. Kurt Mertins

NW Arkansas:
1. Christian Colon
2. Anthony Seratelli
3. Rey Navarro
4. Eric Duncan

Wilmington:
1. Michael Liberto
2. Adrian Morales

Kane County:
1. Yowill Espinosa

Idaho Falls:
1. Luis Piterson
2. Nick DelGuidice (? - SS)
3. Daniel Mateo (? - SS)

Burlington:
1. Derek Hamblen
2. Jose Rodriguez

So, what do we think about these guys?

Why do we still need Soria? I agree he is a great guy and I love what he did for the team in the past. But if he isn't going to be the same pitcher, we don't want him repeating what he did for part of 2011.

Rotation will be:
1. Chen (L)
2. Hochevar (R)
3. Sanchez (L)
4. Mendoza (R)
5. Duffy (L)

Bullpen will be:
1. Broxton (R) - Closer
2. Holland (R)
3. Crow (R)
4. Mijares (L)
5. Coleman (R)
6. Collins (L)
7. Herrera (R)
8. Paulino (R) - Long Relief

Teaford, Hottovy, Jeffress to AAA, even though all three have had very good springs.

Squad will only carry 12 position players, meaning either Maier or Bourgeois do not make the squad. Since Maier has no options and is making nearly $1m in 2012, I think he makes the club. A 13 pitcher roster is made necessary because the Royals don't want to release either Mendoza or Paulino, and both of no options remaining.

Non-starter position players:
1. Quintero (C)
2. Betancourt (U)
3. Maier (OF)

Starter position players:
1. Gordon (LF)
2. Cain (CF)
3. Hosmer (1B)
4. Butler (DH)
5. Moustakas (3B)
6. Franceour (RF)
7. Pena (C)
8. Escobar (SS)
9. Getz (2B)

The psychological edge is the other team knowing they have fewer innings to score. You have a great closer they only have 8 innings. You have a great setup man they only have 7 innings.... It's huge to know that before the game even starts.

I have to disagree with David. You said:

"Organizational depth at 2B doesn't appear to be very good."

I think it'd be fine, if it was organized like this:

KC: Johnny Giavotella
Omaha: Chris Getz
NW Arkansas: Christian Colon

You've got a promising young starter, acceptable veteran depth at AAA, and a long-term prospect who may or may not amount to anything. That's how I'd structure things, if I had any say in the matter. I wouldn't even be upset with Yuni as the backup. On the other hand, I got Getz late in my fantasy league, so I'll just have to enjoy the cheap steals for now.

I understand that aspect of the edge, but two on, no outs, pitching team up a run in the fourth inning is a higher leverage situation than up 2 or 3 runs in the ninth. You give up the lead, the closer never comes in anyway.

Also, I think we'll see "inherited runners stranded/scored" as a popular reliever statistic in the future. And that's really why you need your badass reliever as a Fireman-- the closer can give up a pair of singles and a walk and still be fine, but the Fireman can't allow ANYTHING. High pressure, high leverage, you need your best guy. Up 3 in the ninth is a cakewalk in comparison.

Again, I do see your point, which is why I still think it's important to hype up your closer as well. Just play up their different roles, that's all.
