Thanks Rany, I feel part of some cult like group which roamed the 1970s and 80s.

Mr. Leader tell me what to think.

Or, am just lazy and want you to do the legwork. Actually do feel better about our pitching staff, if changes are meade and most certainly think 2012 will be interesting.

It has to be.

A 3 year deal for Oswalt? You have lost your mind.

Rany, will definitely put in a prayer for Mac. I have a brother fighting Leukemia right now and is soon to have a bone marrow transplant. Makes all this stuff we talk about trivial by nature...

As for your list to come, I'd like your opinion on Bud Norris of the Astros, if possible. He will cost more as he is young but could be a good pitcher for a four to five year stretch which I personally would prefer. Like Rodriguez he pitches in a hitters park and could drop his ERA since he probably wouldn't give up as many homers. Just a name that interests me. Thanks

It's crazy to give a 34 year old pitcher a 3 year deal? Since when?

These kind of guys make since to me. I am not ready to see DM put the farm up for auction to get a front of the rotation starter. And that's what it will take to get one of the young players under team control for more than 2 years. These guys are slightly overpaid, so the return for them will not be much.

Michael, Oswalt is very close to being finished as a pitcher and if you somehow missed all the clear signs, his just completed season had red flags sticking out all over the place.

First off, he is tiny for a starting pitcher, so its a miracle he even lasted this long. He had his lowest K/9 rate of his career, The highest whip, the 2nd highest era, the 2nd highest xFIP (ranys favorite) and the highest Hits per 9 rate.

Secondly, and more telling, he had a major back injury that was so discouraging, he himself said many times that the pain was so intense, it wasnt worth pitching anymore. His injury is a degenerative condition that is the culmination of 11 years of wear and tear on his small frame.

He made 16 mil last year, which is obviously way, way to much for a pitcher who you will be lucky to get 15 starts out of, and the Phils agree because they just nixed their option on him.

Why on earth would he take a huge pay cut to play for the Royals at this point of his career unless we were foolish enough to give him something like 3 for 45 mil? The answer is he wouldnt. That would be such a collossial mistake for KC, it is too depressing to contemplate.

Roy Oswalt, one time Ace, a shell of his former self, is put on permanant IR half way through his 2nd of a 3 yr contract, and he quietly negotiates a 10 mil settlement and is never seen anywhere near KC again...

Is that what you want Michael? Is it?...Is it?

That's funny, cause Oswalt was better after his stint on the DL than before.

Before-3.79 ERA, 9.7 H/9, 2.3 BB/9, 5.3 K/9

After-3.13 ERA, 8.8 H/9, 1.7 BB/9, 5.9 K/9

That doesn't sound degenerative or a lingering problem to me...

Do I think Oswalt would even consider signing here? Not at all. But that doesn't mean we don't ask. If he decides he wants to continue playing, and we are the only team willing to guarantee a third year (and the money that comes with it), then he might change his mind.

Like Rany said, he's always talked about retiring early. I'd stay away unless he's wanting a HUGE pay cut. And yeah, there aren't too many pitchers out there that are really good--which is what we need--between ages 35-37

Actually Michael, your #s are off. After taking a 6 week break, he came back on Aug 7 and threw 67 IP the rest of the way with a 3.59 era and an opponent slash of .285/.323/.412. Decent, but not world beating. If you factor in his one post-season start (why wouldnt you?) when he got rocked for 5 er in 6 IP, he was worse.

Look, if you can convince the guy to come in for one year 7 mil, maybe another 3 mil in incentives for over 160 IP and a team option for '13, fine. Since we all know this will never happen, it becomes a moot point.

If Dayton does as Rany suggests, they will only be paying for past accomplishments. A typical, "Old" Royals move. One that causes the rest of baseball to snicker. Man am I tired of that.

No, my statistics are correct. I took them straight from baseball-reference.com. He was better post DL stint.

Bottom line though, he's still a quality pitcher either way. I'd honestly do something like 2 years, 20 mill with a vesting option for the third year if he hits, say, 350 innings in the first two years.

Let's play jump the gun on Rany, whose deliberations are appreciated but excruciating.

Two possible trades, with the most likely first--Billy Butler to Atlanta for Jair Jurrens (more players could be involved, and, yes, I'd like to get Mike Minor, too). Billy wants to play defense, and in a league with Fielder and Howard, he'll be fine. If nothing else, Melky becomes the DH and Cain improves the defense. The second, less costly, sends Melky and prospects (Robinson? Dwyer?) to Tampa for Shields.

I do love the hot stove league.

Mark, Atlanta has an Eric Hosmer clone named Freddie Freeman locked in at 1B for the next decade. So, that eliminates Butler from any trade piece. I do think KC and Atl make a trade though. Something like, Myers straight up for Minor or Beachy. You got to give up talent to get it.
