Rany, any chance of an off-topic post on the latest from Syria?

Specifically:
Do your relatives have any insights you can share?
Are they safe?
Can the protests be sustained or is the regime too strong?

Or is it too soon?

Thanks!

Off topic a bit. Mike Sweeney was honored last night during the Giants/Royals game on television last night.

I too have never heard a bad word about the man's character. This would include my bother who worked front office for the Royals.

He told me a few times Sween was by far the nicest man he'd met in baseball. The testimonials last night seemed to go on and on.

Wouldn't have been surprised if he was creditied with saving Lassy..

Yet, I find myself thinking not sure if I wish to see him suddenly reappear as a front man for the team.

Rany, I feel like we are at a class reunion. A class reunion where folks bring out the yearbook proof and we find out time has glorified the accomplishments of the past.

Give The Duke another look. I noticed you left off Bip Roberts. Seriously, KC has quite a history for being a relative newby in MLB baseball.

For me, Randa gets in. He was a fan favorite and since he's sitting on the line, that's enough to get him in.

I'd also seriously consider Offerman as well. If I remember correctly, he has the highest batting average of any Royal including George. I know that's an old-school stat but his hitting in general was pretty impressive while he was here as you mentioned.

I would also have to give strong consideration to Wathan. While he plays second fiddle to Porter, he was still a very good catcher for us and was around during the good years.

Does anyone have the inside story why Cedric Tallis is
not in the Royals Hall of Fame as an executive? All he did was make a series of astute trades and acquisitions (before the advent of free agency) to turn an expansion team into a contender within 5 years. He was fired for unexplained reasons. There may have been things about him that Mr. Kauffman (or even Mrs. Kauffman) did not like. The Kauffmans are revered in Kansas City and nobody in Kansas City seems to have the courage to make the public case for Tallis in the Hall.

John Wathan IS the Royals. If you can't tell the story of the Royals without Bo, you certainly can't tell it without The Duke.

A lifelong Royal who became a solid manager and has pretty much never stopped working for the Royals.

If we are going purely by stats, maybe he's not good enough, but going by his dedication, loyalty to the organization, his role as the ultimate utility player during the team's best years (he played every position [including pitcher?]), and was also a HUGE fan favorite.

John Wathan really should be included.

My first autobiography I ever read (I think I was about 7) was Darrell Porter's "Snap Me Perfect." I got it as a gift because someone knew I loved the guy, but they probably didn;t know they were giving a 7-year-old a book with details about a life of hard drugs.

Anyway, I have to correct you a little on the timeline. He went into rehab in the spring of 1980 for cocaine (and quaaludes and alcohol and marijuana and greenies) and was, as far as anyone knew, sober until the day he relapsed and died.

So he didn't have the cocaine issue when he was with the Cardinals. Herzog blamed his worse numbers on his more mellow attitude gained from his new-found faith (according to the Bill James Abstract).

I voted for him. I think he deserves it, but I would have voted for him anyway, because he was my favorite as a kid.

Nice group of players. Virtually all would be below normal Hall of Fame level (even for a team), but why not Randa, Sietzer and Wathan. Three good guys. I would go with Wathan first (since his were the glory years), and then Randa and then Sietzer. Definitely Leibrandt somehow. And definitely Bo as well. Let's have some fun before these guys are totally forgotten.

Why isn't the WAR number considered on a per season basis when assessing the careers of players?

Appier, Porter and Jackson for sure. In addition to the other guys above. Don't understand why Leibrandt is not in. Or how he was so good, but he was good.

You made me curious about Royals 3rd basemen vs. shortstops, so I did a little research. In Royal's history, their shortstops have combined to hit .249/.300/.339, and 3rd basemen have hit .281/.345/.428. They have also created 1231 more runs than the shortstops. (About 29.3 more per year.)
