Interesting! I'm really curious to see how he does this year now. Seems like Bannister could be a heck of a pitching coach down the line as well.

Rany, you're right. Reading Bannister's thoughts on pitching is a delight. He quickly became my favorite Royal last year, and I hope he finds a way to continue being an exception to the rule.

I recall Rey Sanchez as a Royal referring to his pre-pitch positioning as a method of his success in maintaining the illusion of range.

It would seem that a capable pitcher and a properly positioned defense can influence a batter to hit-'em-where-they-are.

If you'll take a meta-comment, I'd really like if you changed your RSS feed to a full feed (rather than an abbreviated one)

I, for one, would definitely read your posts more.

You can change it in your Blogger settings

Why should he have to wait to become a pitching coach down the line? Heck, I hope he's talking with Grienke and other young pitchers right now on how they can improve their odds on getting guys out.

Wouldn't you love to have a Maddox or Moyer sitting on the bench next to Bannister and trading thoughts on pitching with him.

Rany,

There's another article that you didn't link to (unless I missed it) that you should definitely read if you haven't. It's by Mike Fast, also at MVN, and it looks at whether Bannister's BABIP is sustainable. It's a three parter, and in the third part, Bannister himself left a comment. The first part is here.

So let me get this straight, Brian Bannister spends a lot of time with statistical analysis. As a result of the analysis he has determined that if he gets ahead in the count he will be a better pitcher.

WOW, he is really smart.

Very interesting article. I could seriously read about Brian Bannister all day long.

I didn't go back and check, but I believe he talked about improving his K rate during his interview on mlbtraderumors.com. I've long maintained, and I now feel better about this since you said it, that if Bannister can strike out 6-6.5/9, then he's going to be a great middle of the rotation starter. If the young guys pan out like they should, that's all the Royals need.

Great stuff. Banny is my favorite Royal. I'd love it if he became a pitching coach for the Royals in his post-playing days, but my guess is he has his sights set on bigger things beyond baseball.

Hope he's spreading his knowledge to the team now!

The predictabilty of pitches in a given situation is the obvious link for BABIP. The success rate of "control" pitchers is almost entirely dependent on that pitchers ability to throw any pitch on a given count. If you look at a game-by-game, pitch-by-pitch log for each of Bannister's games, I am sure there will be a direct correlation between the "strike percentage" of each pitch in his arsenal.

Greg Maddox is not a good comparison to Bannister as they have different degrees of movement for each of their pitches. Bannister will need to fine-tune his control with his off speed pitches or develop a "running" fastball (ala Greg Maddox) that be can elevate to change the batters eye angle to maintain his success rate from last year.

It's not unreasonable to think there is a direct correlation between his very low BABIP and his very low K rate.

If he really is able to induce more [less effective] contact in strike-out counts, those batters are getting a lower quality of contact on pitches that they'd otherwise be striking out on.

So, we may see these numbers both come back closer to their norms. But, that might not be just because of the laws of averages. But, rather, it's a direct connection to how Banister is pitching.

Given that the pitches Bannister was using - not just the pitch selection, but the pitches from which he was selecting - was extremely different in 2007 than in 2006, I don't find the jump in his strikeout rate to be something that he's going to lose a significant portion of in 2008.

I was glad to see Burgos get traded and the fact they received a ML ready starting pitcher made the trade even better.

love this blog, keep it up rany!

i have a feeling that, although his BAPIP may rise, he will find a way to keep it below the league average. Also, i think another reason why it will be ok is that the royals have more offense this year so maybe we can afford for his numbers to go up a little bit and he can still win games.

Isn't it interesting that the possibly one guy in MLB who is consciously trying to lower his BABIP is the guy with the lowest BABIP in the league?

Bannister will probably regress some, but you've gotta think there's something there.

Rany - thanks for the info. Keep it coming. By the way, I read the attributes under your "About me" section on the first page. I hope they are in ascending order.

Any one see the article in the Star today (Thursday) about David Dejesus' recent "epiphany" about hitting lead-off - and the importance of on base percentage, and the importance of the lead-off guy to the whole success of the team -- if these things were "revelations" to him -- it says a lot about how far we have yet to come... but also speaks to the ineptitude of the previous ten years of Royals leadership.

With "epiphanies" like that, I can't help but scratch my head and wonder why they won't hire me.

Wow. I just read the Bannister articles. It's amazing that he not only has a firm grasp of the concepts, but he's also able to articulate them in a way that's not only descriptive but informative.

Wow. Wow, wow, wow.
