Great article.

I agree, KUDOS to the Royals if the reports are true. If we can get Grandal 200 AB's before the end of this season that is a huge success right there. That means he could start AA next spring.

I'm really crossing my fingers for this to be true!

When I saw that they were looking at Grandal I was ok with it. Then when I saw he was a switch-hitter, and was over .400 this year I got a bit more excited. Most of the reports say he has pretty decent power and will continue to develop it. As Rany pointed out, that would leave SS as the only position w/o a premium prospect or young player. 2012 could be a lot of fun and 2011 will at least bring a lot of young players to watch develop (or not). Would also like to see an emphasis on some RH power in this draft, if any is available.

There you go again you sellout. Every time you make a coherent, well thought out article all I can think is that you are getting paid off by DMGM. I do just as much research as you and i talk to just as many baseball people from my mom's basement. Now that the hot girl at my work told me to stop staring at her, i have alot more time to devote to writing non-sensical hate posts on your blog. I'd write more general drivel about how much you suck instead of writing an intelligent dissenting opinion, but my mom just went to the grocery store and the cheetos are here. You suck.

Saw Grandal on TV today in his regional game. I'm no scout so won't try to evaluate his performance except to say he certainly runs like a catcher.

Oh, Rany agrees with DM? Big surprise.

I saw his game today too. He looked bad on some pitches early in the game, but maybe that was just comparing him to the kid in front of him. Jesus, is he draft eligible this year?

Anyway, he was getting alot of off-speed stuff and not much of it was in the zone. I guess the were being pretty careful with him.

Defense looked pretty good some times, but he flat out missed the ball on a third strike once.

Not going to judge him based on this game, overall I love the pick.

Grandal is the pick from everything I've read and I AGREE with the pick as well! That is a rare occurence for this fan.

Rany, I was off the computer for about a month and I come back and you are writing post after post that seems in agreement with the Royals way of thinking. Unexpected pleasure for this Royals fan and loyal reader of your blog. A little optimism is a wonderful thing!

Go Royals!!! C-ya, AusSteveW

In many ways the org seems smarter - Grandal is the obvious choice and highlighting the fact that per DM's "process" the top tier draftees will be in mlb in two years, Grandal not only makes the most sense from a positional POV, but from an organizational one as well. I very much look forward to your posts about the draft and the minor league talent. BTW - if you had told me before the season started that the Royals' 3,4,5 starters would be 5-5, 5-3, and 4-4 respectively, I would have bet a lot money that the team would be over .500.

Foux-Anonymous #3,

You must be a hoot on holidays Rany. Rambling diatribes with no substance. Your posts make Mein Kampf seem well-written and coherent.

You're a hack. Hang it up.

Rany

I was a little worried with what I'd heard on Grandal, that we were going to end up with a Sanchez situation. But I don't think that's the situation and I don't think Glass has changed to that direction. I do agree that the best part of this draft is that we can draft who we want with no clear choice out there. I had hoped we would start agreeing with the FO more as time went on, which is part of the problem with drafting HS talent, we just hate waiting for them to not look like HS talent! It looks like it's starting to pay off, we just have to hope that DM doesn't cripple us with his FA "fillers" at the point they're all MLB ready...

Excellent article. I was also wondering if the Royals "leaked" negotiations were maybe an attempt to make the Orioles and Pirates reconsider Grandal for themselves thus letting one of Tallion or Machado to fall to the Royals. That would be pretty smart.

The funny thing about the Royals' pick of Alex Gordon in 2005 - "if they pick him and he failed, people would understand, if they picked Zimmerman and he failed, the would have gotten lambastyed for it" -- is that I VERY clearly remember one particular Royals blogger - at the time, he had some sort of blog partnership with Rob Neyer - saying that he'd totally stop being a Royals fan if they cheaped out rather than chose Gordon with the 2005 # 2 pick. (It was in that same column that Rob and this mysterious other blogger were discussing the newly-hired Buddy Bell.)

If they had taken Zimmerman or Braun, and the person they took performed as well for the Royals as he has for his current team, I wonder how quickly that mysterious blogger would have backtracked.

I don't have to defend Rany, but at least he is laying things out and letting his opinions be known.

Unlike so many others, Rany is able to a)form an opinion b)communicate that opinion loudly and coherently and c) still be important enough after making that opinion be known to be around 5 years later to have that opinion be criticized.

Thank you for your opinions on Grandal, Rany. I hope he is the Royals catcher for years to come, but history tells me that won't quite work that way.

I'm a little mystified by the comments on Sale. Why would he be a high first round draft choice if he needs "a complete overhaul of his mechanics"?

June 6, 2010 at 4:35 PM

Blogger kcghost said...

This choice reminds me of the way the Chiefs would slip info to a media source who in turn would write about the person the Chiefs were targeting to draft. And, lo and behold, by draft time a poll would be conducted and the fans would agree with that choice. Considering virtually none of us have seen these guys play we haven't a clue. All you can do is (shudder) trust the process.

Rany you are nothing more than Dayton Moores mouthpiece. How does it feel you Communist sheep? You are an absolute sellout and I can't wait for the fall of Dayton and you, Puppet.

I hope you have the brain wave capacity to know how much you let down your fans. Loyal fan who have come to your blog for years, looking for a sympathetic voice. Now you are the Company. Hope you are happy, Benedict Rany.

Rany,

Just turn the whole comment section off. Then that douche will have to find something else to do with his time. Fifty bucks says he's the same jack off that always posts about hemlock too.

I love the 'Rany as sellout' comments we have going here. This is the guy who was unofficially banned from Kauffman stadium last year. You guys are like Marxist guerillas, ready to hang Che Guevara because he complemented George Bush's tie.

Extremely happy with the Colon pick. I've always felt that you want field generals at shortstop and catcher; those are the first guys to the mound when a pitcher is in trouble. SS also tends to check outfielder positioning and make sure players aren't running back to the dugout after 2 outs. Colon is rumored to have very soft hands, and he can hit a little. It's a great move for many of the very same reasons Grandal was a good idea.

Just to echo Jackie's words......Colon was the captain of Team USA. We are getting a hell of a leader, something the Royals could really use.
