The downside is if the Royals end up deciding, "Hey, that's our $12M boost for this year" and don't/can't pursue anyone else.

If Santana is average next year, I think that means that without other pitching upgrades, the Royals aren't contenders. If they're not contenders, what was the point?

That means that I can't pass judgment without looking at the rest of their offseason. In isolation, this is a bad move. As part of a more comprehensive upgrade, this could be worthwhile.

Rany, I think Dayton might actually be reading your blogs. We can only hope so...

I like to think my challenge to Dayton to go against the Glass family in the last blog posting was the reason the deal for Santana was done (my story, and I'm sticking to it!)

: )

Fair deal, but more has to be done (not Moore has to be done.)

Nice work, Rany

Maybe Santana will be an average Major League pitcher but for $13 million it is yet another Moore mistake. Santana is not an elite pitcher and the Royals can get some minor leaguer to be average. The bottom line as I have said many times is that as long as Moore is involved with the Royals they are a hopeless cause.

Now that's 20 Million+Brandon Sisk for Santana, Hochevar, and Volstad for 2013. Hey it might turn out great but Guthrie and and Haren would have been what 23/25mil and a middling prospect or two?

1. For a post of yours to last 24 hours before being rendered meaningless is probably a record. Usually they're meaningless immediately.

2. I lost a lot of sleep wondering whether you had endorsed the trade or not.

Ahh Wiking I imagine that your blog is a lot more relevant? With more comments and page views? Please direct me there so I can be properly informed

The Royals seem to have picked up Guillermo Moscoso on waivers. Could be a good pick up, with risk, of course. Another option to look at in the rotation.

Wiking44, you spend alot of time reading material you find worthless? I am sure Rany will get over your snub with the help of a little therapy. In the meantime, I am sure he appreciates the page view.

Rany, what are the rules regarding Volstadt's contract? At what what point will they owe him money? Could they send him to the minors for cheap? Just curious.

As far as the trade is concerned, the only downside I see is if it scares the Glass' off big free agents in he future like it seemed to last time. Otherwise, what do I care if its 12 mil wasted? They weren't going long term with anyone, so he was the best one-year chance they were going to get for nothing. (Would still like to see Haren, though.)

Good piece but unfortunately it's business as usual. Adding a player on the downslope of their career on the cheap...

Another excellent post Rany. Although the price is high, I see Ervin having a great season in his "contract year", maybe 17 to 18 wins- as long as his arm holds up. It's a good trade. The real answer is to get Paulino Duffy, Lamb, Arguelles, Melville and the rest of the TJ club back and effective. Add in Odorizzi and Montgomery and Will Smith and Ventura and we have the internal options going forward. I am for keeping Hochevar. He has struggled for sure, but his raw talent has him very close. I think it's more mental and approach with him. I won't cry if he gets non-tendered but he's not a throw away either. Santana can be an elite #2 kind of guy. Add one more guy similar but more reliable perhaps, and take a chance on a reclamation like Roy Oswalt and we'll be just fine for 2013 and looking really good for 2014+

We often forget older players on the last year of a contract.

I see Santana having his best year out of the past five.

"give me 25 average MLB players on the last year of a contract, and I will win you a world series"
