Interesting and an acceptable risk where both parties win. When you opened up with the Rays story, I expected you to advocate that the Royals trade Myers for Shields, Price, or Moore. If Myers is the player we hope he will be and Cain can stay healthy and everybody else remains at similar performance levels, then I think the Royals are a Guthrie and Greinke signing away from contending next year. That's a lot of ifs, but it's not a ridiculous delusion.

The Royals are going to finish around 15 games back in the AL Central. A full season of Perez should be worth another 2-WAR. A full season of Guthrie should worth 2 more WAR, Greinke 4-WAR, and Myers over Francoeur (for most of the year) 4-WAR. By my count, that's 10-WAR without even factoring in improvements by Hosmer, Moustakas, or anything from upgrading to Odorizzi.

I think this is highly unlikely to happen. I think it is much more probable that they trade Myers in a package for an ace. It is much easier to find a RF than a quality starter.

Is the Berroa long-term contract worth reviewing? While it turned out badly, it was an attempt to sign a player on a cost-effective basis. If Perez (my favorite player) or Escobar decline severely ... , well, quite frankly, the contracts are structured well anyway. In theory, I agree with Charlie Finley that all contracts should be for one year- say after a few years of ML control. If a player is worth $40 million a year - year after year - great for all. If a player declines or loses his focus, no one is stuck for more than a year. The reality is signing Myers long-term is a risk. If Myers will sign a long-term favorable contract for the Royals, do it. If not, trading him for a dependable young ace would also be great.

Heck, who knows with prospects. We may have caught a break on Hos & Mouse not negotiating. Hos looks like a bust and Moose is shaping up to be just "a guy".

I'd rather not leave Myers another minute in the minors. When a guy is ready he's ready.

And whatever it takes to mess up the ML roster Moore can be counted on to do it.

Rany - I have read your comments for many years and enjoyed them a lot. I was actually there in 1985 when the Royals won the World Series but haven't been back since.

Unfortunately until the Royals get rid of Moore and Yost they will never win so it really doesn't matter what they do. And I would never want anything to do with Greinke as he has proven he is a quitter.

It boils down to runs scored and runs allowed. If you look at the big picture, you can make two arguments for Myers. On one hand he can improve the offense and on the other he can improve the "defense", or runs against via a trade for a front line starter.

Although the offense has seemed less than ideal, they have actually done decent compared to previous teams. As of yesterday's game, the Royals offense is scoring fewer runs compared to league average than last year but aside from last year it is the best offense since the 2003 abnormality. The offense should get better and probably move to a level that is slightly better than league average, without Myers. Adding Myers at the cost of say... the current right fielder, should probably get the Royals to an offensive level well above league average.

As much as we've complained about pitching, the runs that have been given up really haven't been that bad. Compares to the league average, we are almost dead on, and compared to the Royals recent history, we are at our best levels since 2007. Most, if not all, of the credit goes to the bullpen who's ERA has improved each of the last four year. The starting pitching ERA has been pretty consistent since 2007. If Sanchez's performance is removed, 2012 would actually be pretty good compared to recent history. So if Myers was traded for a front line starter, then, who knows, each aspect of "importance"... runs for AND runs against could see large improvements.

Whether the Royals put Myers into the lineup next year or trade for a front line starter, either should result in a pretty decent improvement from the Royals. I for one, would much rather see Myers in right field instead of what the Royals currently have.

The Royals should consider moving Moustakas to 2b next year and putting Myers at 3b, at least until the Frenchy nightmare is over.

Please, Oscar frickin Tevaras is NOT a better prospect than Wil Myers.

For one thing, we don't really know how old he is.

It was cool that Myers got that big reception at the Futures Games, but you might want to recall the last time we got all excited about a prospect and gave him a huge ovation. It was four years before that player developed into a useful player and will probably never be a stud.

Gordon is more than a "useful" player. He is a stud right now. He has a 130 OPS over the last two years and leads the league this year in doubles while playing a very good LF.

Here is a crazy idea how about offer the Phillies one of Starling/Colon/Bonafacio and Ventura for Halladay no 7-8 year commitment and he would change the pitching staff for day one. On the other hand maybe the best strategy is take take whatever the Rockies throw away

Guthrie 78ip 3.00ERA 3.57K/BB 138ER+
Paulino 155ip 3.55ERA 2.51K/BB 116ERA+
Hammel 118ip 3.43ERA 2.69K/BB 122ERA+
Morales 76ip 3.77ERA 2.53K/BB
115ERA+
all guys dumped in the last year from the worst staff in MLB

Great post. That anyone thinks that Hochevar should be kept around just shows how low the standards of Royals fans have become. He needs to be flushed. Greinke isn't the answer, nor is Price. Signing either to big money long term contracts would be foolish. I would keep Myers but, as others have said, not sign him for more than three years.
