Thank you for being a Royals' fan--as insufferable as that's become. I'm glad to see that they might actually be turning the corner and it's not all smoke and mirrors.

I don't understand what point secrecy had at #4. The top-3 had clearly separated themselves, and most think the Royals would have jumped at any of the three if they happened to fall.

So, why mislead everyone, when they had their choice of the best of the rest? I can't imagine a reason, other than they wanted to sign Grandal or Sale but they were asking for too much. Then, they had to cover their tracks so it didn't look they were going cheap.

Still, I'm ok with this draft as long as they spend money on the Latin American crop. If they scrimp on that, I'll be concerned.

Bunch of low ceiling college players? Sounds like Bairds back! Glass must be pressuring Dayton to compete soon. But of course Rany likes this crap draft. So AA is stacked now. My question is where is the talent for the low minors from this draft?

Royals back to their cheap ways and Rany likes it? Sounds about right.

Great insite Rany. Thanks for the blog. I just pray that Glass gives Dayton the time and money to continue to feed the minor league system. As Royals fans we are always looking forward 1,2,3 years down the road for hope with usually zero in the way of payoff. But this time it feels like 2012 might be different. Of course thats when the world is supposed to end so maybe the Royals contending for a Central title is the sign of the end times.

Rany, as always thanks so much for the info. Love baseball, but know football much better. When offering scholarships, or scouting pro talent know decision makers pay heed to an “unofficial stat.”

I rarely see this in amateur baseball though. This stat would be how the prospect did in head to head competition with other blue chip players. Especially important information for big money football players as left tackles, and cornerbacks. For instance, I would have loved to see how many of Colon's big hits were against higher quality pitchers. Or, how did Grandal do in catching pitchers spinning the ball over 90 mph?

I guess GMDM sees it as some kind of a victory over the forces of evil that he was able to conceal his top draft pick until the last moment. Hopefully the media types (e,g, Mellinger) who fell for this disinformation campaign will be more circumspect in the future.

I thought Ryne Stanek was supposed to be the hot shot high school pitcher in the KC area??

Anonymous 1:03am. Did anyone say "low ceiling college players" other than you? No. These guys aren't projected to be superstars, but at least average to above average everyday regulars. After those top 3, there just aren't any prospects that you can look at and say "That's a future star."

As far as "secrecy", I think it has a lot less to do with the teams drafting around them and more to do with the available talent and how much their price tag will become. Most experts were saying after the top 3, there wasn't much difference between #4 and #40, so why pay more there when you can get a player of similar talent for less? They probably had 3-5 guys that they liked at that spot and picked the one with the lowest price tag, and I can't blame them.

On a side note, watched Strasburg pitch last night. Dang that kid is good! Every bit as good as the hype, which is rare.

"I thought Ryne Stanek was supposed to be the hot shot high school pitcher in the KC area??"

Not sure I understand that comment. Stanek went to Seattle in the third round (#99 overall), while the Royals took Adam in the 5th round (149 overall). That would seem to indicate Stanek WAS the higher-rated player, at least by the Mariners, although Adam is committed to Missouri, which could have pushed him down on some boards.

Off topic but maybe not.
The first run last night would a league average shortstop get to that ball? Not throw the guy out, but at least stop it and keep the guy on second from scoring. Zac gave up the double to the next guy anyway so it may not have mattered, but who knows how it would have gone if Yuni would have got to that ball.

I happen to have been part of the Rockhurt High 1982 class; so I, of course, remember David Cone. While I would be surprised if many people know this, but David Cone really can't be called a "Rockhurst High pitcher", because Rockhurst didn't have a baseball team in 1981. David Cone DID play quarterback for Rockhurst High, and Rockhurst HIgh NOW has a baseball team (because David Cone gave Rockhurst a donation to start one). Cone played his baseball in the KC Ban Johnson league.

Is there any chance Colon doesn't sign? I mean, does he think he'll be a top 3 pick in next year's talent rich draft? Give him his 4 million (or whatever 4th picks get) and get him playing asap. I am hoping he is the Royals shortstop in july 2011. Oh yeah, and try Soria as a starter!!! I will take that one to the grave.

Rany this draft is awful. And uninspired. You know it, I know it, the experts know it. Your rabid case of Daytonmania is clouding you already questionable judgement.

This draft creates a massive hole in the minors in 2012. Only you, with your newly created pro-Dayton persona, would endorse this low ceiling, college signabilty draft.

Please return when and if you ever decide to grow a spine, you worthless turncoat S.O.B.

Thanks for the insight. Totally agree with you re: draft strategy -- either a catcher or SS and a college guy seemed to be the highest priority and the org did well enough considering the available talent. I'll look forward to your take on the radio!

Wow. Actually liking something Dayton does makes you a turncoat S.O.B.? Having an opinion that differs from yours makes you that angry at him?

Most experts that I have read so far actually rate the Royals draft as one of the better drafts of any team this year. But hey, because Dayton Moore is the GM, it must have been a bad draft, right?

I LIKE this draft. Nobody knows, of course how it will turn out for another 3-5 years, but I liked the strategy of being heavy on SS, RHP, C, and OF, the weaknesses in the Royals system;I don't believe they took a 3b and only one 1B-man. Colon made sense. I felt RH power was also an area of need and Eibner sort of sounds like a better (hopefully) RH version of Rick Ankiel.

And I wouldn't worry about depleting the system in 2012-not everyone picked was a college player and if there's a glut of talent, so what? Some of it can be traded for more, younger prospects and having too much talent at ANY point or level in this organization would be a most welcome problem to have.

Dont forget that the international signing period opens up soon. Lets hope that with a weaker overall draft class the Royals go hard after the young Latin American guys

Geez, folks. No one is forcing you to read this BLOG. If you don't like the content, surf somewhere else and delete this link from your favorite list.

I think this draft is going to end up being ho-hum overall. They could be saving themselves for the international players or next year as well where they evaluate many more talented guys at premium positions. Lets get these guys signed, get them playing and see if anyone pans out.

OH MY GOSH! HOW DARE ANYONE, MUCH LESS RANY, ACTUALLY GIVE DAYTON CREDIT FOR ANYTHING???!!!

C'mon head-hunters, give Dayton SOME credit. He's shown to have a pretty good eye for amatuer talent. Just look how much better our farm system is than it was 5 years ago.

Watched Colon play against UCLA the other night. I came away impressed. I do worry about his lateral range though, which would impact his ability to stay at short in the pros. But that's the only negative I saw, granted in only one game.

Yeah, right, this was such a weak draft. Why didn't the Royals get that great pick that they let slip by? That would be, hmmm, I'm not exactly sure myself. Perhaps one of the folks who is being so critical can clarify where the Royals really went wrong here? Tell us which players the Royals should have gone for instead of the ones they did. Then, when those players' Major League careers are over, come on back and we can see if you were right. I look forward to your being proven so smart in 2030 or so.

Face it, some of you assholes aren't happy that the Royals are actually turning it around and starting to make the right (smart) moves they should have been making long ago. Rany isn't jocking Dayton, he just sees the light at the end of the tunnel. Quit hating on everything and go to some Neo-Nazi rally or something to work out some of your agression.

I know Adam's coach. Word is Jason has said he is 90% going to sign with KC.

Yeah the team is definately turning things around. On any given day the lineup includes studs such as Kendall, Bloomquist, Guillen, Yuni, Pods. The 27 Yankees team doesn't hold a candle.....

This team is team is full of overpaid, old, undertalented mercenaries. And this is what Dayton gives us 4 years after he is hired?

Yep, with that track record how could anyone doubt the Process?

June 14, 2010 at 5:45 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey, someone has to play for the major league team until the young guys are ready. Only Kendall and Yuni are under contract past this season, and it's not like any of them are blocking a young stud who's ready for the bigs.
