For what it's worth, if you only look at time spent with the Royals, Hochevar's ERA+ is worse than Davies', and is the worst among all Royals pitchers with 250+ IP:

1. Luke Hochevar 80
2. Kyle Davies 81
3. Glendon Rusch 81
4. Chad Durbin 82
5. Brian Bannister 85
6. Runelvys Hernandez 87
7. Mike Wood 88
8. Jimmy Gobble 90
9. Dan Reichert 90
10. Floyd Bannister 90

Completely crazy idea that no one will ever do: have a fan-appointed board of directors (votes could be based on season tickets) that must ratify payroll and trades. The GM & Owner still run the team, but the big decisions get run by the board.

Wouldn't almost all of the worst moves throughout baseball have been voted down by fans? Plus, you could have elections to get on the board. How fun that would be? You're telling me that wouldn't increase fan interest/season ticket sales if it bought you a vote on baseball decisions?

From the owner's perspective, he would quickly sell out his season tickets when somebody needed a few more votes to get on the board.

If you got really crazy, you could get rid of owners altogether and instead treat the teams are not-for-profit, community-based organizations. Kind of like community hospitals.

My point is, Royals fans would certainly not have approved Davies or Hochevar extensions because they actually watch games and, you know, care about the outcomes of games.

Well, if Hochevar's problem is that he can't pitch from the stretch, then how about just tell him to take his full wind-up whether there are men on base or not, and just live with any extra stolen bases that occur? He wouldn't be the first pitcher to do this, and the results couldn't possibly be any worse than him turning ordinary hitters into Josh Hamilton anytime there are men in scoring position!

Please dear God no. He has to go. There isn't even a hope of turning him into an effective reliever because of his inability to work from the stretch. Canny insights, Rany - you've really stepped up in a difficult year.

The only rational choice is to admit Hochevar is a failure and send him on to some other team. I do think the Royals will do just that.

Classic Royals. Guthrie wants to talk about an in-season contract, and the Royals want to wait. Wait for what? So Guthrie can get out on the free agent scene and someone, with all the extra money come in from the new tv deal, will offer more for Guthrie than the Royals.

The Royals....they'll go to arbitration with Luke

A tradition unlike any other.....

Rany, I'm disappointed that your analysis of Hochever didn't include his Polk Points Per Year (PPPY).

Great insight Rany.

I am on board with what you are saying. Sign Guthrie.

If you look at Guthrie as the 4th starter. He is quality in that position.

I think Chen is a capable 5th starter on a playoff team. To me Mendoza should be your 6th guy, long man in the bullpen who you might give a few spot starts to.

I know you can't really count on them, but I based upon others returns, in as good of shape or better, I think you count on Duffy and Paulino to return around July.

In my opinion those guys are both number threes. And they each have number two potential.

Until they get back you go with a combination/committe of Odorizzi, Collins, Crow, Teaford and Will Smith and even possibly Ventura. I would personally put Odorizzi and Collins out there.

If you handle things that way, once you have signed Guthrie, you only need to add one more starter. And the way I look at it you start at the top and you work down. What will it take to get King Felix? Offer Ventura, Adams, Cuthbert and Hernandez. If that won't work add in more arms. Zimmer and Selman. Keep adding until Seattle has to say yes.

If Seattle says no you go to your next guy on the list. Josh Johnson, Jeremy Hellickson, Anibal Sanchez, and any others.

If you sign Guthrie to say a 6MM dollar contract there should be close to 20 MM left over for your one guy. Go big for that guy.

Nobody else is needed. The lineup is set. Exchange Myers for Frenchy. I would platoon Getz and Gio. Though that isn't ideal, if that is your worst spot in the lineup it is manageable. Either Pina or Pena for your backup catcher. Please, Please Moore, don't waste 2MM here and 3MM here on back up guys. Save the money for one big guy.

Bail on Hochevar. Sign Guthrie. Find another big gun for your starter.

It's so easy.

Why am I so scared that Hochevar will still be there? And that Quintero will be brought back on a 3.5 MM dollar deal. And that Yuni is given another chance at second. And they trade away Cain and Escobar because they aren't good bunters.

I don't understand why the Royals did not secure a club friendly contract with Guthrie when they had the leverage on him of the thing he needed to rescurrect his career -- starts. The Royals could have used the leverage, for example, to get a $6 million option for next year or maybe a two year deal with some type of club options. In effect, promise to give him starts until the end of the year in exchange for options that were club friendly. Instead, the Royals will now need to overpay for him.

I don't think King Felix is going to get traded anywhere. Tampa is the team to trade with. You could start with David Price and work your way to Jeremy Hellickson. Tampa needs bats, but it might take Myers or Butler to get someone worth having. It might be worth it.

Great article. So if you add together the Camdem yard affect and the AL East affect and the home field affect. Guthrie should have an ERA of 3.25. The old adage about statistic can say anything comes to mind, but seriously offer him and Hoch the same contract at the very least.
I would tell Hoch's agent he has to sign before Guthrie or we remove the offer.
All of this doesn't address then Chen issue either as I think his tank is nearing empty.

Any chance Chen pulls a Gil Meche and walks away after this season, giving the Royals a break on the contract? Yeah, I didn't think so.
