Did anyone need any more ammunition?

Didn't think so.

Maybe Frenchy will be so bad that Dyson will get regular playing time...

Yep, not going to be holding my breath on that.

I don't think slotting Dyson into his eventual role of 4th/5th outfielder/pinch runner/defensive replacement this year instead of next year is really that big of a deal. I mean, who do you sit next year to make room for Dyson to start regularly? Myers? Cain? Eibner? Lough? Gordon? Parraz? D-Rob (might be stretching with that one)? All of those guys have higher ceilings than Dyson and are also better than him right now. If Dyson is part of the future, it'll be as a fast guy off the bench. If he can do that job effectively now, there's no reason not to start him on it.

The team has enough talent coming that it doesn't have to pretend "almost good enough" two-tool guys like Dyson are real players. This is a good thing.

I don't mind cutting Blanco because he really doesn't add anything to the team that Mitch Maier doesn't already do. The other issue is where will Dyson play in AAA. Right now the outfield in Omaha is Lough, Orlando, and Cain. I don't want to bench any of those players over Dyson or Blanco. Those three players have way more upside.

Treanor could have been added because Kendall's setback is more serious than they are letting on. It may well be that Treanor/Pena is the catching roster for 2011.

I agree with Sean and Jason (above). Dyson as the 5th outfielder is not a bad thing. I suspect with the inevitable injuries to LF (oops, I mean OF) positions, I'm sure he will see some playing time. Plus I love his disruptive abilities on the base paths.

Agreed on Treanor, but you're seriously getting worked-up about losing Gregor Blanco. I actually think that is a good sign, if that is the most irksome thing to come of Spring Training. We're only one game back for the Cactus League crown!

I'm sorry, I don't see the Blanco move as any reason to criticize GMDM. I see the argument re: Crow, but Blanco is a throw away player, we have several more with his skill set in the minors. I think it shows that the Royals don't believe that Dyson will be anything more than a backup outfielder. Are they wrong for cutting his development off? Maybe, but people would have something to complain about if it were Cain instead of Dyson. As for Betemit, obviously the Royals don't think his offense will make up for his defense and his history tells you that's true when he plays too much.

I agree, not much to complain about. Minor arguments at best. If this is the worst we have to complain about this year, then it will be a good year!

And I like the Treanor move, if only because it means Misty May might come to KC once in awhile! :)

Why are so many of the Royals' rookies-to-be 26 or 27 years old? Didn't there use to be a time in baseball history where Spring Training was about finding the best 25 players? Cain outplayed Franceour, but doesn't win the job. Several infielders outplayed Getz, but they get sent down. Everyone expects Hosmer and Moustakis to come up and play mid-season. Why? Is Moustakis a better hitter than Aviles? No. Did the best catcher in camp win the position? Doubtful. Almost every roster decision appears to have been determined before the trucks unloaded in Surprise. It seems it is next-to-impossible for a Royals player to win a job in Spring Training. Perhaps this is why the Royals have been so bad for so long. They don't play their best players at the major-league level.

Hahahahhaha, ive only read the catchers but i have to say that part on the International Backup Catchers Brotherhood really cracked me up, and the part about him being Kendall's doppleganger. man that was some sly schnye humor

I'm in the majority with comments left here. No May, no Blanco, no big deal. These guys, and most the 25-man roster, are placeholders. There will be a need to gain value-add from some of these guys over the next 12-24 months.

For example, I could see Crow gaining value and experience over the next 15 months, and if he doesn't fit into the teams 2013-15 plans, trade him for a minor leaguer at the 2012 trade deadline. At some point we will be TOO STOCKED at the ML-AAA level and 40-man roster, so now GMDM needs to develop a sustainability plan.

Maybe Crow and Dyson are part of that.

I think you are getting too worked up about the fate of fringe players. I doubt there is a robust trade market for Gregor Blanco 3 days before the season starts. If you are trying to trade him, teams know he is going to hit waivers soon. Maybe the Royals have just decided that players like May, Blanco, and Dyson don't have the skills needed to be a part of the big picture. If so, give them credit for not wasting any more time developing these guys. If they go somewhere else and blossom now, then we can criticize. But for the moment, we all konw they are fringe players at best once the main talent starts arriving.

Of course, losing Blanco is not a terrible thing. That isn't the point. GMDM went out of his way to acquire this guy when we had a player just like him (Maier)and he is just going to throw him on the scrap heap. Once again a clear sign of roster mismanagement.

If Francoeur has to be replaced the Royals will move Melky to RF and Cain to become the CF. That still leaves Maier as the fourth OFer and Dyson going to Omaha for regular playing time.

What a shame it is that Betemit cannot field a batted ball. That would end the flirtation with Getz.

Blanco could still be a 'nice little player'. Not particularly valuable but OK. The point is, I think, that the Royals cannot affort to throw away any value. They just can't afford to have any wasted resources and still compete.

kcghost-Went out of his way to acquire him?? Blanco was a throw in to the Tim Collins deal, that's it, that's all. It's not like Blanco was the centerpiece of the deal for us. See if he has anything to show us and see if he can contribute. They obviously have decided that he doesn't have a future with the club. "A clear sign of roster mismanagement" is going WAAAYYY too far. Every team acquires guys one year and tosses them on the scrap heap the next. Especially teams like the Royals who are always in search of cheap "diamond in the rough" type talent.

For those of you hoping Francouer plays bad enough that he loses his job then you are nuts. Hasn't he done that all ready in spring training? Dayton is like that one buddy with the psycho girlfriend that he won't dump. Everyone else sees it as a horrible relationship but him.

Oh, and Getz is a joke of a player. He and Frenchy wouldn't be in the conversation as starters anywhere else.

Sean DeCoursey,

FYI, Jordan Parraz isn't a Royal anymore. He was waived last fall, picked up by the Red Sox, and is now in the Yankees organization. But your point is still valid. There are better options than Dyson at even AAA, so why not use his talents (speed and defense, which really don't need that much more development) at the MLB level when there is no real probability that he's ever going to hit enought to be more than a PR/defensive replacement.

I think it is a little funny that Rany picks Coleman, May, and Blanco to make the roster just a day before all of them get beat out. (To be fair, May would have made it if the Treanor-for-cash surprise didn't come out of nowhere.)

I agree with most, Blanco is no catch and I was rooting for Dyson to make the team anyway because I love his speed. (Does anyone know if he can jump over a car???)

I'm glad to get a sneak peak of Jeffress, Collins and Crow.

However, I have the same concerns about Jeffress' control and the potential for the big inning. Check out his line today: 1 inning, THREE WALKS, 1 hit, 1 ER, 2 Ks. Get used to it. Let's just hope he doesn't get busted again for the hippie lettuce.

I can't wait to see Collins getting ML hitters out and watching them go back to the dugout trying to figure out how a kid that looks like a high-school sophomore just sat them down on three pitches.

As for Crow, I sure hope he's ready. There is no doubt that his results have been a huge disappointment in the minors. How that justifies a trip to the show, I just don't get it. I don't think his start in the bullpen will mean he has to stay there. Heck, it sure gave Greinke a shot in the arm towards starting dominance. Let's just hope his stuff manifests at the big-league level.

I don't think these moves condemns GMDM. However, the Crow thing is the one move that baffles me a bit. PLEASE don't let this go from the "best farm system ever" to the beginning of the "greatest mismanagement of potential talent ever". We've been watch the latter for the past 25 years.

On an up note, even though 'spring training means nothing', it's fun to note that the Royals exit camp as the best team in baseball. (or possibly tied for 1st with the Giants if they win tonight)
Cool.

I agree, the one move that is puzzling is the Crow move. It is the one that could either turn out to be the best move of the year, or the one that blew up in our faces. I'm hoping for the former.

questionable move after awful move at the major league level, and yet delusional royals fans think they're going to be in the playoffs in 2 years. TINSTAAPP. There is zero proof that Dayton Moore has any idea how to put together a major league roster. Knowing dayton moore, most of these "hot prospects" will probably peak in the minors before they get a chance at the major leagues. The two best hitters on the team spent the majority of last season in the minor leagues. Your catching prospects will be lucky to get a majority of the at-bats at the position by 2015. What's to stop GMDM from trading 2 of these top prospects for someone like Corey Hart? Certainly not common sense.

Keep wishcasting and hoping though, it's really cute.
