I can agree with the A- for the Chen Master. Well written.

I like most of the grades, but I am little confused about the semantics in your discussion of Chen. Basically Chen's numbers of k/9 and b/9 and flyball rate stayed the same. You kind of blow the .1 difference and 3% difference out of proportion for Chen.

I think Chen will make a great #3/4starter for the Royals next year. I think Davies will make a great #4/5 starter for the Royals next year. If the Royals could figure out a way to find that #2 FA, this rotation would look alot better. Greinke, FA #2, Hochevar, Chen, Davies/O'Sullivan/Pucetas, instead of Greinke, Hochevar, Chen, Davies, O'Sullivan/Pucetas.

I think the bullpen will be much improved as well. With Collins, Coleman, Hardy, and Holland all getting long looks in Spring Training. Add a couple of them to Soria, Meche, and Tejeda, and you are looking at a pretty good young, inexpensive bullpen (minus Meche). When you have a great closer, setup man, and middle relief, you can shorten every game to 6 or 7 innings.

I have no doubt that Montgomery and Duffy will get long looks in Spring Training as well. If one or both of them come out and shine, maybe they don't need that FA #2 or Chen. If one of them isn't up by mid season I will be very upset though.

Why is everyone so down on Teaford? I am pretty sure he had the best performance out of all the Royals pitchers during the Pan Am Games. He seems to be a strikeout wizkid. He doesn't throw hard, but he locates everything very well.

The Royals have a nice stable of lefties coming up. It would be nice to see Crow, Melville, and Sample turn it around next year, so they have just as many righties down on the farm.

Luis Mendoza = Organizational filler for AAA?

When I see Hochevar and Davies on the hill I am reminded of the quote from by Abe Lincoln when he was getting flack to replace a failing general with "anybody". He said I can't have anybody, I must have somebody.

I find these two guys to be useless, but somebody has to go to the hill everyday and you need five guys to make a rotation. With Hochevar it is always something that keeps him from becoming effective. With Davis (and his fat clone O'Sullivan) it is his constant nibbling. His nickname should be 2-0, because that seems to be the count he has on every hitter.

The Royals might give Monty and Duffy a long look in spring training, but why bring them up to start the season. Wait until mid-May and, if they are ready, bring up Moose, Monty and Duffy.

kcghost, you don't want to bring them up until mid to late May, so you can save a year on arbitration? They most likely won't be with the Royals in that 6th year anyways, so what's the point? Get them up to start the year, and by mid season get Hosmer, Myers (if he moves to RF), Lamb, and Dwyer. Screw this waiting game. They are either ready or they will never be ready.

Teaford is another guy that should be in AAA next year, that I am excited about. Why does he get no love?

No Anthony Lerew?

For some reason, I forgot about Lerew, or thought he'd be placed with the relievers, even though he started in all 6 of his games. I'll get to him in the next section.

Guys like Luis Mendoza shouldn't even be AAA fillers. He offers us nothing. I would rather we keep Brian Bullington. At least he can have a gem every once in awhile. Mendoza goes out and gets shelled every time.

2011 should be the litmus test for Hochevar. Either he proves his value or it is time to move on. I agree with the idea that a #2 FA might be at the top of the shopping list this season. If Hoch is consistent enough to slot into #3 then I think you hang onto Chen at #4 and see what the spring training lottery brings for #5.

Rany is right on about Bannister. If his shoulder can come back, he probably has a future somewhere, just likely not in KC.

I think the bullpen may be more solid, and I agree that Meche could be a lights out setup guy. Not what you want to pay $55 million for, but since we're already committed to paying it why not take advantage of his abilities in short stints.

Rany,

Thanks for putting in the expectations. It gives me an idea of how your grades compare to my own. While we do have some similarities (big shock as we both study stats), we have a few glaring differences too. I am not going to nit pick your grades, but I would rather focus on the three players that could have some sort of future with the organization out side of Greinke. I am putting them in order of the ones I have the least to say about.

Sean O'Sullivan projects out to be nothing more then a AAAA pitcher. As you point out, he doesn't miss bats nor have excellent control. Even at his young age, chances are he is around for a couple of years to fill in a start or two when someone else has to miss some time.

Luke Hochevar great point about his improvement after the "sermon on the mound." He still seems to be a bit "unlucky" with his BABIP that high. However after watching what has happened with him (statistically) over his short career, one has to wonder whether he is not unlucky at all, but rather an exception to the rules of sabremetrics particularly when you look at each stat independently. Looking at them all in concert though provides us with a better picture and shows us the possibilities for him. Sure he walks a few too many for his K numbers, but the rate at which he gets ground balls should counter act that. However again, I have to wonder if that is so based on the fact a lot of the ground balls turn into hits with him.

Kyle Davies I could get into a long winded rant about him (which was originally intended), but I doubt any one really wants to read all the negative things I can say so I shall summarize.
First anyone that believes he has four plus pitches, can just go on drinking the Royals FO Kool Aid like they did on Meche. You can just go to Fangraphs and see how wrong this is.
Second, there can be no comparison between he and Meche. Meche had two well above average pitches for starters. On top of that, he actually had a mechanical flaw in his delivery that Coach McClure was able to fix. This created a jump in the natural career arc for a pitcher that Davies will not be able to enjoy.
Finally, he is (at least so far) unable to repeat his delivery consistently. For a guy that has been pitching (and theoretically using the same delivery) that long is almost completely unacceptable.

I would close with this, I hope that Banny gets healthy. Truth is that I don't believe it will matter. He can (and does) study sabremetrics all he wants. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the talent needed to be effective long term. And I hope you are right, that he will become a broadcaster because that would give us an ally on the inside for once.

Meche has generated 9 positive WAR over his contract (including -.7 from last year). At $5M/win that's $45 million in value. A 2 WAR season next year is break even.

Maybe Greinke doesn't like Kendall? Did he pitch better with Pena?
