Thanks Rany...I have been dying out here waiting for the next post! Hoping Moose is the real deal and that the work ethic sets him apart. On Hosmer, while his fielding on the edges of his "zone" may be questionable, one thing I see (eye-test) is him making the other infielders look really good on throws to first. We haven't had that in a while. Love having these two young horses on the corners and feel more optimistic about the Royals than I have since McRae was managing.

Am I the only person on earth who hate's Trevor Cahill(as a player)? I just don't get all this love going round. An awful 5.5k/9 to 3.3bb/9 ratio. A career 4.77 era outside of Oakland. A ridiculous .236 babip his one good year. And yes he does induce groundballs but he also gives up a decent amount of hr's 1.0/9. Compare his 23 year old season in Oakland to the 23 year old season of Vin Mazzaro and you will find the exact same season. The Dbacks got ripped, it will be a miracle if he puts up under a 4.50 in that park.

My take on the urgency of the Navarro trade is that the player the Royals wanted to take was off the board. Once that happened they figured they might as well sell the pick and make some cash in the process. That really is the only plausable explanation for needing to unload Navarro before the deadline and then promptly selling the pick.

Royals, you are exactly right. The guy they wanted was Ryan Flaherty from the Cubs taken right before them at #4. He had played 2B, SS and 3B in the high minors while hitting a combined .280/.347/.478 at AA and AAA. He would have been penciled in as the utility guy and when he was gone, their wasn't a LOOGY or util guy left on their board they liked, so they punted.

Personally I, if not merely for entertainment's sake, would have picked Pat Venditte at that point. A switch pitcher is defiantly something I would love to see. Plus he is a local guy, which is always a plus.

McGoldencrown, is that informed speculation, or do you have a real source that has confirmed that information?

Will had a great career, but I'll be disappointed if that's what's in Hosmer's cards. Biased and unfair, I know...

And speaking of Will, B-R has this to say about him:

June 7, 1982: Drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 4th round of the 1982 amateur draft, but did not sign.

How did I not know that?

Rany, the answer would be, informed speculation based on my own research. Maybe I should have qualified it with "My guess is..." but I didn't.

Here is an article written by Bob Dutton in a publication called, The Republic, that touches on the subject:
http://www.therepublic.com/view/story/BBA-ROYALS_6762299/BBA-ROYALS_6762299/

Royalsreview Rule 5 discussion:
http://www.royalsreview.com/2011/12/7/2618439/your-royals-rule-5-preview.

BA, JJ Cooper Rule 5 review:
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2011/12/2011-rule-5-draft-results/

No direct links between Ryan Flaherty and interest from the KC FO, just speculation bases on available info, expressed needs, comments from Dayton and reading between the lines.

From the Dutton article:

“I’d say it’s 70-30 that we may end up doing something,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “There are a few pitchers and a couple of position players who we like.”

From this, its not hard to deduce that the player(s) they really liked had already been selected and no other player was even remotely interesting enough to even bring to camp.

Since, its obvious that the only positions they would consider carrying on their roster all season are 1) backup Util player, and 2) LHP (non starter), that leaves only two possibilities: LHP Lucas Luetge taken #3 by the Mariners, or Flaherty taken with the next pick.

I went with Flaherty based on scarcity within their own system, availability on the FA market and the potential expense in salary. Plus, I just think he is the more valuable prospect moving forward.

I don't hate the Yuni signing. Right handed punch, albeit semi-punch, off the bench that can play the infield positions. What? You wanted Getz instead?

December 20, 2011 at 3:37 PM

Blogger feifmeist said...

actually, i would rather have getz. i will simply restate ranys review of his season for why he's better: LH hitter to spell Gio, can actually play defense, steal bases, walk, be a good situational hitter, and be a good guy in the clubhouse. yuni has none of those attributes and his added 'pop' is far outweighed by his lack of any other discernable skill. but i think we end up keeping both, at least until gio proves he can hack it. i dont completely hate the signing, but i certainly dont like it and would have preferred someone like ryan theriot or carlos guillen.

Mattyboombalatty - just because a pitcher is not "sexy" (high strikeout) pitcher doesn't mean he isn't good or isn't effective. Why would he not compare to another ground ball pitcher who doesn't get a lot of strikeouts, Derek Lowe ? The price was low the risk was low to acquire Cahill. If I'm not mistaken the Chicago White Sox won the 2005 world series with five pitchers just like Cahill. Never going to pan out ? pitching in spacious Petco, PacBell, Chavez Ravine ? It will shock me if he does not have a better year than 2010. He would have looked great in Royals blue

December 20, 2011 at 4:06 PM

Blogger Royals said...

I'll give you Getz can steal a base, but would you feel confident he could knock a runner in from second base with the game on the line in the bottom of the 9th? There is absolutely no way.....and if he can't do that, what's his value as a pinch hitter? There is no sense in carrying a guy on the 25 man that can only backup 2nd and can't hit his way out of a wet paper bag. Yost can use Maier to pinch run, Getz is useless to us now.

December 20, 2011 at 4:14 PM

Blogger feifmeist said...

i would argue he's the guy you bring in the ninth with a guy on first and one out to lay down a bunt or a guy you pinch hit to lead off an inning or be a late inning defensive replacement for gio. hes a national league type player, which makes a lot less valuable to the royals, but we dont really have another guy like that. my point is more that yuni isnt even an upgrade on yamaico navarro or any 4A guy you could bring in for the minimum.

December 20, 2011 at 4:33 PM

Blogger Royals said...

Here is the problem I see with that argument. Anybody you would want to pinch hit for in the scenario (someone that couldn't drive the run home from first with an extra base hit) is going to be somebody that can execute a bunt himself. i.e. Escobar. As far as pinch hitting to lead off an inning, I'd still pick Maier over Getz. And again, carrying a guy on the roster who doesn't start and can only back up one position, 2b at that, is not worth the roster spot. Yuni might not be a significant upgrade over Navarro but he isn't the clubhouse cancer that Navarro reportedly was either. I still say its not a bad signing to back up all infielder positions and a much better use of a back up roster spot than Getz.

December 20, 2011 at 5:15 PM

Blogger Michael said...

One could definitely argue that Yuni can only back up one spot too, shortstop, since that's the only position he's ever played. He's had less than 10 starts at 2nd and 3rd combined. We're asking him to play two positions he's never really played before. Granted, not that often, but we're still asking him to do it. And lets be honest, does he profile as a good defender at any of the three positions??

December 20, 2011 at 6:49 PM

Blogger Royals said...

Anybody that can play SS can play 2B and definitely 3B. His problem at short is his range. He definitely has the arm for third and all he needs to do is knock it down. Countless shortstops have made the transition from short to second or third.

I think the question isn't "which one, Yuni or Getz?", but "why either Yuni or Getz?" They both have well documented shortcomings and everytime I see either one of them in the lineup (last year was a relief from Yuni) I grumble and gasp with exasperation. From a performance vs. playing time standpoint this move has only minor significance, but from a psycological standpoint it has major significance. Everytime I see them I am reminded of thier past performances/failures and am disheartened.

the royals obviously felt navarro was not a "clubhouse" guy and good for them, chemistry matters. I don't like the yuni singing as much as the next guy, but renteria and o cabrera were never going to sign here, and sometimes the devil you know...
