Thanks for the update. I've really enjoyed your look at the prospects. I'll never understand why they haven't given at least a glance at Kila. Teams with a lot more to lose than the Royals have given longer looks to much less deserving players. Never heard of Lough, so that's news to me. And it's hard not to keep an eye on Giavotolla as long as Callaspo has a glove and a roster spot. I keep wondering how attractive this team will be to Grienke when his contract is nearing an end -- and will the team be in the right place for it to make sense in investing an even bigger contract for their #1. You can see a team like the Giants investing now with their good young position players coming up (save for the Zito albatross).

Rany,

When's your rundown on this year's minor-league roster dressed up in Royals uniforms? Is this the year that the Royals finally give the '62 Mets a run for their money?

No more of this 97-loss or 102-loss stuff. If you're going to stink, go all out! 121 losses baby! Come on Dayton Mooreon, you can do it!

So: Knobloch without the speed, or maybe Jeff Kent without the power?

I want to defend Hillman a little bit here. If indeed you asked the manager what player he was most looking forward to adding to the roster, it's not too surprising he would pick Dyson--the kind of player who makes a manager's job so much more fun. Having him onboard would be great for late-inning flexibility, which is not the same as saying he's a future starter. (Of course, maybe I spoke too soon. It turns out his top PECOTA comps are Albert Pujols and Frank Sinatra.)

Thanks for doing this 7 part update.. I love reading it..

Brian Anderson, to the low minors as a pitcher?.. I guess this is good because Mitch will make the team after his spring.

Does BA stay on the 40 man roster?

Hi Rany,

(from another Jim than the one who normally comments) Once again, I enjoyed every word. here is the vote for the long posts. I keep wondering what is wrong with me that I still love/hate (ok, obsess) about the Royals and have never even been to KC in my life. but if you are still stuck with this affliction, then what am I to do?

thanx again!

"A team like the Royals needs September to look at guys who might be regulars for them in the future"

While I agree with you completely here, Rany - the Royals do not. Two years ago, Kila was called up and they gave him all of about 30 PAs in a full month of games. Last year, they didn't even call him up!
All in some misguided attempt to "win" 4th place or something.

Looking at their minor league stats Giavotella reminds me of a RH Chris Getz. Average defense, good speed to get you 15-30 SB's. Simialar BA's. A little pop. Similar size. Same kind of plate discipline and tough to K, though Giavotella looks to walk a little more than Getz. Glad he's there, but I'm not expecting him to make a major impact.

Wasn't Cordier left unprotected by the Braves in the Rule 5 draft this and/or last year?

Rany,

Nitpick: You either mean
'slider-speed bat', or 'slider bat-speed.' You definitely do not mean 'slider-bat speed'. I don't know what that last one means; I don't know what a slider-bat is, though I guess I imagine that a fast one is good.

Really enjoyed all 7 parts.

On Kila, I saw him with the O Royals last year and the previous year he was here. He just did not look like the same hitter. He looked very average for a AAA hitter and I think you need to be excelling at your current level to go to the next if you are going to succeed.

Thanks for the prospect updates. I think its a testament to the farm system that you are actually able to write seven (seven!) posts about the upcoming talent. (that or it's a testament to your analytical ability/absence of social outlets).

Also, I trust that you and the others on this board read the mildly funny update from Bill Simmons on his conversion to the Sabermetric society.

Lastly, at what point are you no longer a blogger when you get to talk to Royals brass in person? Or is the medium fluid like that? Blogging isn't basement writing anymore? Don't get me wrong I think it's great that you are getting quotes from Piccolo and Hillman. Keep it up!

Boy, I didn't think there were any organizations as bad as the Royals, but I see the Mets are going to bat Mike Jacobs cleanup, ahead of Jason Bay!

Is there a reason no one EVER talks about Jordan Parraz? He's 25 but seems just as good as Lough, if not better. Why don't you mention him?

If I had talked about one more player, he would have been Jordan Parraz. I just figured that 2000 words was enough, and I felt I had more interesting things to say about other guys.

But you're right - Parraz is criminally underrated, which is weird, because he's actually one of Dayton's guys, having traded for him for Tyler Lumsden's carcass.

He has a broad range of skills - great plate discipline, developing power, a great arm in right field - and he's almost major-league ready. Three months ago, he made more sense as a platoon partner for Ankiel/Podsednik than Brian Anderson did. He certainly does now.

Rany,

Looking forward to your blogs on this season. Shaping up to be interesting.

Sounds like Dyson should be up in the bigs now. What's to lose? I keep getting the feeling the Royals are holding back. I know stat freaks say speed on the bases/batting matters little.

Sure seems to bother Royal pitching. Late inning replacements Dyson in at Center/pinch run, Kila pinch hitting playing first moving Butler to DH.

Begging for Freebee....what's the best cure for poison ivy?

Thanks for all you do!

2000 words is indeed enough, especially after all the other prospect rundowns. Thanks for answering the Parraz question, I've been pulling for him for a while. And thanks for the entire prospect rundown series, holy moly was that long and great. Your perspective on everything is great.

Rany
Ernesto Mejia, 25 years old, will start this year as the Arkansas Naturals 1b. This guy is coming from a nice season in Venezuelan Winter League with a line of 291/353/556, 13 Hrs and 36 rbi winning the Rookie of the Year and the MVP of the league.
The guy was injured a lot meanwhile was with the Braves and looks invisible for almost everybody but he can hit hard the ball.

This started out as a comment on the Royals leaving Kila off of the roster (is there precedent for a minor leaguer demanding a trade?), but grew to an absurd length (sound familiar?). Anyway, shameless blog plug in three, two, one, NOW: http://kcsportsguy.wordpress.com/

We have Mike Aviles and Alberto Callaspo, who are more than capable of playing third base, and on Opening Day, we trot out Willie freaking Bloomquist??

Less than 9 innings into the 2010 season and we can already safely say: SAME OLD ROYALS! !@#%#$@@#!!

And we are officially as close to .500 as we will get for the season. Ugly and sure to get uglier. I have been a fan since I was 7 years old (1972) and have given up on ever having any hope for this team. Oh well.

Dave Owen might be the worst 3rd base coach in the history of baseball! Down FOUR in the 7th, one out, our OLD catcher on second, our BEST hitter on deck and he SENDS Kendall home from second on a single to straightaway centerfield! I am speechless.

Yeah, I was pissed at Kendall for going until I saw the replay and Owen was sending him! What the heck was he thinking? Maybe 10 years ago Kendall makes it safely, but not now! Fire Dave Owen!!

I live in Richmond, Va., where the Giants AA affiliate has just moved in. I was checking out the roster today (I'm planning to buy some tickets) and guess who is part of the team?
Tony Pena, Jr.! Only now he's a pitcher instead of a SS, so I can attend the games without having awful Royals flashbacks. Then again, Andrew Sisco is also on the team, so I may get flashbacks anyway.
