Yes, the 2323 coincidence AND the Biancalana coincidence are signs. If your first patient on Monday morning has the last name of "Brett", I think we can assume divine intervention. Thanks for the blog entries during this incredible journey!

I agree - Aoki's catch was amazing. I thought of two defensive plays in Royals history that arguably could match or at least come close to Aoki's in terms of greatness, difficulty and crucialness.

1) October 3, 1985 at Royals Stadium: Royals and Angels are both 88-70. Royals lead 4-0 in 8th inning. With two on and two out, California's Doug DeCinces smashes a liner toward the 385 sign in left center. On a full- out dead sprint from centerfield, Willie Wilson runs it down and catches it backhanded, ending the threat. Royals go on to win the game and take a one-game lead over the Angels with three to go. They go on to win the division, ALCS and World Series.

2) Oct. 9, 1980, Game 2 ALCS at Royals Stadium. Royals beating Yankees, 3-2, in 8th inning. With two outs and Willie Randolph on first,
Bob Watson ripped a liner to deep left field. Left fielder Willie Wilson overthrew his cutoff man, U.L. Washington, but George Brett backed up Washington, took the throw in short left, whirled and threw a strike to Darrell Porter, who tagged out Randolph, ending the inning. Royals went on to win the game, and won the ALCS two days later.

If nothing else, this is at least the first season that you didn't throw a fit and said you give up on the team and said you'd quit watching.

Well, the season isn't over, but you're doing good staying on the bandwagon for as long as you have!

Thank you for your writing Rany. Full disclosure, I saw the Tuesday and Friday night game but not the Thursday game so that might be coloring my thoughts on the matter. The problem I see brewing for the Royals is protecting Hosmer. I'm not sure why you give that guy anything to hit. It seems like walking Hosmer neutralizes some of the psychological damage caused by the Royals base stealing. Is this a concern that you share?

@David Nielsen - I think we can add Dyson's throw last night to that list.

@Steve Koester - that is one of the best comments that I have ever seen on Rany's blog. I tip my cap to you. A question to Rany: If Big Game James pitches a gem on Sunday night, doesn't that justify "The Trade"? IMHO it does, but would love to hear your thoughts. Wow, the planets seem to be aligning for a weird playoff season. This is a joy that I have been deprived of for 29 years. This is fun!

I actually sat next to BobinKC at a Blackjack table in one of our local casinos recently. I had 17 with the dealer showing a 6. Of course, I stayed on the 17. The dealer flipped a 10 then drew out a 4 to beat me with a 20. BobinKC told me I should have hit the 17. Thanks for the input.

What Dayton Moore did with that trade wasn't the equivalent of hitting on 17, it was about the equivalent of hitting on 19, then hitting again and drawing an ace both times.

Wil Myers sucks. It just took the league a year to figure it out. His first two years look about like Frenchy's first two years except Frenchy was less of a butcher in the outfield and didn't strike out as much. Dayton sold high on a 4A player. I'm not sure if he was smart enough to know that at the time but, he did.

Not going to argue about that trade. I only come here to read his analysis; I'm not even a Royals fan. But one thing that has really struck me is this--if you want to praise Dayton Moore for a trade he made, it should be the Greinke trade, not the Shields one. He got Cain, and he got Escobar, and he got Odorizzi, who helped the Royals get Shields. All in return for a pitcher who wasn't going to be there when the Royals were good enough for him to make a difference.

Just Cain and Escobar alone, if you believe WAR (I know Dayton Moore doesn't, but I do), are the difference between this team finishing 89-73 and making the playoffs, or finishing 82-80 and missing them.

Give Moore credit for having the guts to make that trade. Because I know it made a lot of Royals fans very upset.

He already said he wouldn't be writing as much this year no matter what. He was written quite a few columns and blogs since the Royals have been in the hunt. He tweets during every game. Even when he criticizes the team he has a good nature about it and apologizes and admits when he is wrong. Where were your comments before the playoffs Bob? Have you actually followed the team through the past 20+ years of pure TERRIBLE management and baseball? Rany was one of the only people to write logically about this team over the lean years, so what if he can't write a 1000 word column every day. If you want instant analysis about the Royals, go to Twitter, read their columnists and or go try out a blog yourself.

But yet you've apparently been reading more posts than anyone else over the past few seasons, if you think he has ever written every single day! And you keep coming back to check comments. Hmm. Where can we go to find out your initial thoughts on The Trade Bob? Do you have a blog? Twitter? Facebook post? Anything?

You're such a damn hypocrite its not even funny.

Bob - you're not just an idiot, you're a mean-spirited, vindictive idiot.

Rany - I've told you this before. I love your analysis, and look forward to what you have to say. Hope you can find a little time for it next year, at last once in a while.

Does anyone seriously believe that the Royals are objectively a better team than the Angels? It just shows that in a short series, anything can happen.

Does Moose [of all people] hitting an HR in the 11th inning suddenly make Dayton Moore a genius?

Did tweaking the lineup suddenly make the Royals a more than 4 run per game team in any sustainable way?

Yeah, I know it's all about winning, and the Angels sure laid an egg.

But winning 3 extra-inning games in a row is more about luck than anything else. Perez, who has zero plate discipline, goes 1 for 6 in a game, but his 1 gets the 11th inning RBI and sends the A's home. There's a big feather in Moore's cap.

Shields is almost certainly gone after this year. Where does that put the Royals?

Congrats to the team for overcoming their manager's ineptitude. They're lovable and I hope they take down the O's and then whoever makes it from the NL.

Since my Tigers underachieved AGAIN, I'm behind the Royals the rest of the way.

Cheers!

I wonder how much of our success should be attributed to the fact that the Lo Cain has stayed relatively healthy all season. As far as losing Shields Unfortunately that is very likely but I have noticed a rookie reliever that would slide in very nicely at the three slot right behind Duffy and Venture

I'm guessing next years starting rotation would be (in no particular order): Ventura, Duffy, Vargas, Guthrie, Finnegan?
I wonder what the timeline is for Zimmer and Manaea (sp?).
I'm guessing Guthrie is gone after next year but I think this rotation (if Vargas doesn't regress too badly, Finnegan is the real deal, and as long as Ventura and Duffy continue to grow) could be just as strong if not stronger then this year. I'm sure we're going to lose one of Davis/Holland but is Hochevar coming back (and will he be the same)?
And who will be our RF next year (Aoki or can we make a run at some kind of power bat?) Dyson is the perfect 4th OF imo.
I'm actually just as excited about next year as I am about the playoff run right now.
