In the Arizona Fall League, through 15 games, Wil Myers is hitting .375/.514/.714. That would be 1st in OBP, 2nd in SLG, and 1st in OPS.

I hope he Royals trade for someone you have listed, or will list. However, I cannot handle the idea of losing Myers. If the Braves buy "low"* on Myers, I will cry and and cry.

*Because a .745 OPS as an injured 20 year old in AA is terrible...right?

Danny, like you, I am very excited about Wil Myers' exhibition in the Fall league. VERY excited. But, (you knew it was coming) the context of the league must be taken into account.

Here are some team statlines:

TEAM BA/OBP/SLG.....ERA

Surprise: .305/.378/.514... 5.09
Mesa: .298/.375/.486... 5.41
Peoria: .295/.373/.439... 5.28
Scottsdale: .259/.347/.403... 6.49
Phoenix: .255/.338/.451... 5.54
Salt River: .272/.340/.418... 4.83

Here are the park dimensions for Surprise: RF: 350ft CF: 400ft Lf: 350ft....Probably about the avg H.S. field.

The bottom line is, their is a lot of top hitting prospects in the league, very few equivalent pitching prospects, very thin air, and lots of short fences.

Is it great what Wil is doing? Hell Yes. Are the #s legitimate? Not even close, but its a nice way to finish a disappointing season. The real test comes in his AA repeat next April. Hopefully free of injury excuses.

I'll never understand the fans that insist the Royals get an impact starting pitcher to be the ace of the staff, and anything less is a failure of Dayton Moore BUT don't trade any of our good prospects to do it. Look, nobody WANTS to get rid of Wil Myers or Mike Montgomery, but the fact of the matter is if you're going to bring back impact talent you have to spend impact talent. The Royals could trade both Wil Myers AND Mike Montgomery and not even come close to "mortgaging the future" Remember, our major league roster averages like 24 y/o. If all we're going to offer is B-level talent, we're not going to get back A-level talent because someone else actually has to agree to these trades.

Nice article, Rany. I hope in the next post or two you identify which prospects you would be most open to moving.

I tend to agree with Danny, if we are to move a Myers or Montgomery.....even Cuthbert for that matter.....it better be for someone on the next list Rany is working on. Mike Minor anyone? Gio Gonzalez? Tommy Hanson?

Scott-
Fans typically overvalue their own team's prospects, and assume everyone else's are imminently available for peanuts. Baseball fan human nature...

My worry in all of this is that GMs are quite aware of the dearth of free agent pitchers, and will slap ridiculous trade price tags on all of their established major leaguers knowing that someone will pay.

None of the pitcher Rany has listed really fires me up. I'd just as soon keep my best talent. Until someone can convince me otherwise I do not want to give up Monty, or Myers, or Lamb for a guy we might only have for a year or two and if we are lucky he's a 3.

McGoldencrown,
You're right that I--heck "we"--should all temper our excitement about Myers given the context of his play. And you're certainly right about the dimensions and level of play--not to mention the sample size--but I don't simply see silver lining from a rough season. I tend to see elite talent ready to break-out. Obviously his performance next year will be the true indicator, but I would REALLY like to see it done in a Royals affiliate uniform given that ceiling.

Scott,
If the Royals want a top of the line guy, I think most people understand it would be very costly--including AT LEAST 1 of the Royals top 5 prospects. Because I think the Royals ideal time to compete is 2013-2017, I advocate going for one of Rany's "moderate" targets that wouldn't cost a top 5 system guy. With a stronger 2013 free agent pitcher class, the Royals would be in a better position to make a run at a top guy then. It also happens to coincide with a very real ability to compete. Burning a young guy (even if not a sure thing) with high potential and lots of team control for someone who will be gone by 2013/14 seems foolish to me.

I am okay with moving Dwyer or Colon. And now that I have said that, they will break out. You're welcome, Chris and Christian.
