Rany, it would be interesting to see what you think the payroll goes to in the next few years, particularly 14 and 15 when guys get arbitration eligible. I think Dayton Moore is looking to those years and not wanting to be saddled with a huge contract for Wilson or Jackson who are not aces, particularly when next year's class has better talent. I know you love the possibility of Oswalt, but realistically I just dont think he'd come to KC. If you take those three guys out I dont see a free agent worth spending the dough on. Plus, if Crow goes to Omaha to work on starting (and inevitably comes up to replace a starter that goes down) then Herrera could make the opening day roster and the bullpen hasnt lost anybody. Like you, I too hope that the Broxton signing is a precursor to a trade for a starter or another impact player, but even without it gives the Royals something they havent had in a long time: quality depth and roster flexibility. Usually its about how we find the least bad 25 players to start a season, whereas now everyone will have to fight to be one of the 25 best. As always love your work.

Rany,

I think Dayton Moore has done a good job of signing undervalued assets. He signed Melky, Frenchy, Francis, and Chen when no one really wanted them. Melky was an an above average to excellent player for the Royals. Melky turned into a really good starting pitcher, Sanchez. Frenchy was outstanding, Chen has been their best and most consistent pitcher for two years and some other team is going to sign Francis based on his quality starts for the Royals. I think GMDM is distancing himself from the horrible Jose Guillen signing. Throw in Gil Meche and I'd have to say the balance of the scales is very much in his favor of making good moves. I disagree with you. I think good moves do make a good roster.

I know you want another starting pitcher but these moves have to make you wonder. What is the cost these other teams asking ? If Broxton regains 80% of his all-star form it will allow the bullpen to be even better. This will shorten the games for the starters which can make the current starters better.

I am much more interested in a looking at the lost supplemental picks for the Royals since GMDM has been at the head of this organization. I agree, since the Royals have done a great job of drafting and devolping talent over the last three years it is awful curious their value of supplemental picks seems to be so low. I wonder how many they have lost over the last five years with signings and who were the players picked by other organizations in the supplemental round and how are they currently performing ? Undervaluing these picks is a problem for a team that must build from the draft in order compete, especially since they money they can spend on the first four rounds has now been capped ? Do you know how supplemental picks will fit into the draft cap ?

I did some back of the napkin math on payroll in 13 and 14 and am rather discouraged. If you figure the following:
2013 ($M):
Butler 8
Soria 8
Frenchy 7
Chen 4.5
Gordon 9 (?, 4 yr. $36M deal hopefully)
Hochevar (3rd arb) 7
Escobar (arb) 2
Hosmer (super 2) 5
Duffy (super 2 maybe) 2
Crow (arb?) 2
assuming all 15 other players, including two starters (unless crow is one), play for the league minimum, you're looking at a payroll of at least $60M, probably more like at least $65M.

when frenchy and chen come off the books in 2014, most of the young guns will be first time arb elibibles and the others will be in line for decent raises, meaning the $11.5M gets eaten and possible then some.

if david glass is mandating a $65M payroll during the time period when this team should be at its best, that is a crime. my hope is that dayton is looking at offering $15M per to greinke or cain next year. if he cant afford an $80M payroll that is ridiculous, and that is what is implied by not signing an impact starter this year or next year.

I sure hope Broxton is healthy... I guess our training staff would see any red flags. I'm not sure I buy into the "shortening of the games" mentality - that implies that the bullpen arms are going to as good as last year. That's not usually the case... or at least there will probably be injuries. Broxton is depth but it's not like our starters only have to go 5 innings... the bullpen isn't that deep.

I'm really saddened by the Frank White situation. I can see both sides but I feel like even if White was a pain to work with behind the scenes the organization has to put up with it. White is so beloved by the city that the only possible outcome is the Royals looking childish and out of line. That's exactly what's happening. Frank White is upset and I don't blame him. This is no way to be treated.

On top of that, Kevin Shank was a homegrown guy that deserved better. If you're going to fire these two men (or not renew their contracts) then man up and give full explanations. The public will still hate you but at least everyone will know where they stand . The current situation reeks of nonsense and immaturity... which is eerily similar to the Royals attempted silencing of you, Rany. At least the feeling in the pit of my stomach is the same in both scenarios. It's like a good friend of mine went and did something terrible... I still love the friend but I've lost a lot of respect for them.

Royals are in on Gio Gonzalez. Love the pitcher, just curious what it would take to get him. Knowing our track record with Billy Beane, we'll get taken behind the woodshed.

Two things recently that have been WTF? moments in Dayton Moore's record.

1. Trading Yamaico Navarro for a couple of low level prospects to clear roster space for the rule 5 draft, then trading that pick to the Yankees for cash.

2. Claiming Aaron Laffey off waivers, then non-tendering him.

What point did either of those moves make?

So, now that Jo Jo Reyes is a free agent, what's the over/under on how long it will take Dayton to sign him?

there's actually a clause in his contract, that as a former atlanta brave, his rights are automatically assumed by kansas city...

The Broxton signing is not about shorting games. It is about having another guy who can close out games. If Dayton thinks the Royals are going to be in a bunch of close games, you can't have Soria and Holland going 3-4 games in a row very often, and make it through a season.
