"Rostering"? "ROSTERING"? You been freebasing the psoriasis meds again?

Otherwise, good analysis, even if I am not as enamoured of Phil Hughes as you seem to be. Better him than Joba, though.

I never looked at Hughes' splits and realized that new Yankee Stadium was killing him so badly. He sounds like someone the Royals should give very strong consideration to.

Why is Beltran a good idea? Seems to me he'd be an expensive, old, fragile, slow outfielder. Wouldn't this immediately give back some of the defensive support our pitchers have enjoyed? Does he really hit the ball far enough to leave our ballpark with consistancy? At his age, I'm seeing flyouts and DL stints. Plus StL makes way better decisions than us, so if they don't re-sign him...

Great read. Can't wait to read your analysis for solving the offensive woes of this team.

Well, there goes Hudson. Johnson is wooing west coast teams. I like Hughes, but it's time to move.

Speaking of moves, I don't see much of a solution to right field problem except Giancarlo Stanton. After that, maybe Trumbo. After that, I'd stick with Lough and Maxwell and work on second base. Rany, what do you think Stanton would realistically cost? And would you do it?

Wow Pena really? That's our big move? Why did we need to put him on 40 man roster? I am sure loads of teams drool over a catcher who can't hit. I can't wait to see what's next. Maybe Kyle Davies has a cousin we can sign for our number two starter. I am sure the Tigers are sweating and ready to make big move to counter.

I'll tell you why Pena was put on the 40 man roster: Because the Royals love Penas, and Pinas. Tony, Tony Jr., Brayan, Manny.... Even the old KC A's had Orlando Pena.

I don't understand the Vargas signing. Not certain I will dislike it, though four years is a lot of Jason Vargas, but I don't understand it. I hope he comes cheaply.

Also, does Moose have any trade value?

Okay, so $8 million a year. Basically paying him like a 1.5 WAR pitcher, hoping for his 2 WAR production, which is probably not a stretch. But I still don't understand it. Looking to replace Santana and Dayton signs another Bruce Chen. Not a bad contract, but if we are already bumping against payroll limitations, this has keep us from bidding for anyone in a higher tier, right?

Side note: you know who should have inked this deal? The Twins.

I'm waaayy late to this party, but this well-turned phrase caught me eye: "This is robbing the mailroom clerk to pay the CEO."

But, of course, in 21st century America this IS what we do.

Hey Rany!
I really enjoyed your article posted to Grantland; the one about Kansas City sports fan fan futility. Doesn't the Super Bowl victory and the aura of Hank Stram still hang in the air around Arrowhead?

I was a young lad living in Nebraska, rooting for the Vikings way back when. I lived equidistant between the two teams. I'm pretty sure I liked the Vikings because they had cooler helmets. And the mystique of playing in blizzards had some apeal as well.

Anyway, Hank and the Chiefs broke my heart that day. You conveniently start your chronology shortly after Kansas City's Super Bowl win. It shakes your solid argument just a wee bit.

I have gotten to witness, in person, World Series victories by the Twins in 1987 and 1991. I don't let myself get excited by the Vikings; years of therapy got me to this point. So, I'm thinking perhaps you weren't alive for the Super Bowl win and thus it's not really part of your sports consciousness.

So, that's my long preamble to my question: Does the Super Bowl victory erase some of the futility? Or has it been too long?

Sorry to post this on your Royals blog; it's the only way I could fine to reach you. I'm glad I discovered your blog. Really good stuff. Really good writing. Thanks!
