Congrats!

As for the Royals... I've been cynical for a long long time that Dayton Moore-or-Less can pull this "process" off successfully. The way they've been handling things lately, I think they're on thin ice here.

Rany, big news on #4! Glad to hear things are well.

Admittedly, I'm sick. This March has been awful (including Mizzou's loss in the first round. Ug).

Yes, the injuries are painful. Perez the most. I'm terrified that bad knees and catchers are not a good combination for someone we hoped would be the franchise catcher we've been waiting on since... oh, wait, since forever. I think many of us saw Soria's coming based on his 7 runs and 10 hits in 3.1 innings. Paulino is unfortunate, but not devastating and there was the question of where does he fit anyway with Mendoza pitching out of his mind. (although I'm highly concerned that Bruce Chen may have seen his final days of being able to get batters out. Opening Day starter? Really? Yes, he's been our best pitcher for two years but wow.)

And suddenly, I think Yost and Moore are TRYING to #$*% this thing up. Getz over Giavotella is insane. This is absolute typical, yet completely stupid, Ned Yost: 'Give me the veteran with (perceived) defense over a player that actually helps us win anyday' mentality. Brutal.

And truly worse is the decision not to put Dyson on the bench. Same reasoning. Yost will not pinch hit and/or run. Why? Because he over-values loyalty to his starters/veterans and their perceived defensive values late in the game over the opportunity to generate runs prior to the ninth. Dyson is a GAME CHANGER. Not only his ability to get into scoring position, but his ability to rattle a pitcher into making mistakes is priceless. How many wins might he be worth? 2? 3? 4+? But he will NEVER pinch run for Getz or Francouer or Butler or Escobar or Pena in the eighth because he is too afraid of needing them in the ninth, when the game may already be lost. And all for what? Bourgeois? Yes, Dyson can't hit (much) but he doesn't have to. He can play in 4 out of 5 games and come to plate once. That is not a liability. And his defense is good. Insane.

And lastly, Yuni. YUNI? Really? I'm stupified. If I hear Yost mention ANYTHING about Yuni's defense being even goo (not good, just goo) then I'll throw something. Hard.

Please don't let this be an indication of decisions to come. Please. An alternative to Yost starts creeping to mind. But it's not time to call for Yost's job, and GMDM is what he is (unfortunately sometimes), but if things go south to the point where that becomes a topic of conversation, although I might welcome a potential managerial upgrade, something has gone horribly and perhaps irreparably wrong.

I hate the “the professionals know more than you” line. If that were true, no one would ever try anything different and sabermetrics would have never made it into the game.

I knew this was going to happen with Yuni... I just knew it. I should have known better with Getz. I figured it would be Yuni and Gio at 2nd, but the Royals seem to have it in their heads that Getz is great. I just don't understand it. Getz has had more than long enough to prove what he can do. I really hate those two.

Congrats on your kid Rany!

I don't want to know what Dayton Moore and Ned Yost are doing to each other in those photos that Yuniesky Betancourt and Chris Getz have.

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter, Rany. Nothing like a little perspective, eh?

I'm a little confused on all of this. You tweeted earlier this spring training that you met with the sabermetricians employed by the Royals in Suprise and stated something along the lines that you had more respect for their opinions and trusted their judgments more than in the past. That is obviously not a quote but basically the gist of it from memory. That, coupled with their professional scouting department, still leaves you questioning the motives of sending Gio down and leaning towards Mendoza?

Rany, congrats on daughter #4! Hmmm, Gordon's number is 4. This can't be an accident. This must mean Royals will get him signed to an extension! It's fate!

Or just a dream.....

Congratulations times four Rany. Sounds like your buuilding another "A League of Their Own".

Sounds like the general tenor is that people don't like the Giavotella move. For those that do, you can always find compatriots over at Judge's site.

Wow...you truly seem to believe you're smarter than the Royals front office. When you tweet that your track record is better than the Royals front office, what track record are you talking about? You get things wrong all of the time, and barely ever offer actual suggestions...just of a bunch of generalities and no brainer suggestions. I notice that it’s extremely difficult to find much of those old "Rob & Rany on the Royals" dialogues, which were full of a bunch of bad ideas and poor suggestions.

Have you actually seen Paulino's bad outings this spring? He's not been a victim of bad luck -- he's getting *rocked*.

You're so convinced you're right about everything that you absolutely make no effort to possibly understand the decision making process major league teams actually go through. That “the professionals know more than you” card is actually valid in this instance, because you seem to understand very little about what actually happens on the field. Your absolute refusal to acknowledge or comprehend that things happen on the field that are not measured by stats just shows how close-minded your analysis is..

Rany, I appreciate your rant. Regarding the Yuni issue I'm no expert, but here is a wild, wild guess: could this kind of roster move could go back to the new draft spending rules?

If Moore/Yost don't have the creative space to make the Royals competitive via the draft, I wonder if they are employing selective roster spots toward guys like Yuniesky, trying to repackage them so as to flip them at trade dead line. I don't think Moore/Yost are playing for the championship this year. Further, as we know, the market is irrational at the trade deadline. I think this roster move regarding Yuni is a gamble.

As we know, baseball defies our sense of justice: If a vendor can receive $10 for 12 oz. of beer at a baseball game from a rich ticket holder, well, than who the heck knows what a repackaged Yuni with his .280 OBP could get us come July. It is sick, that Gio isn't on the roster, but I wonder...

First off, congratulations on your child!

Secondly, way to waste a lot of words on a number 8 or 9 hitter and a number 6 starter. You're really focusing in on the things that matter. And by focusing in on the things that matter, I mean not even coming close to focusing on the things that matter.

Run scoring and run prevention are the names of the game. The Royals got by with Getz at 2B for most of last year and still had a league average offense. Yuni, for his career, is a better hitter than Getz. Yuni played 2B growing up. The emergence of Lorenzo Cain in the 2 spot made Giovatella's bat less important. So the Royals are going with run prevention over offense at 2B, cancel the season; life is over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're a talented writer and obviously a smart guy for getting into dermatology, one of the hardest fields in medicine to go into, BUT, Mr. J -- between the megaTV-networks of the Rangers and Angels, the Pizza-money of the Tigers (and their new stadium), the ability of the Sox to spend, the Yankees, Red Sox, and even the Blue Jays -- also in the TV network/spend money category, and the Rays doing what you guys need to be doing but better -- I would choose a new team or concentrate on staying current in dermatology and tending to your girls.

Royals are still 2-sort of stud pitchers from even entering the conversation of contending.

You can talk about whiffs, fouls, strikeout rates, walks, etc. as much as you want but it's not going to change the fact that you need multiple 16-game winners -- or at least 2-3 12-15 game winners, which is not happening soon for you guys.

Mazel Tov on the new addition!

As for the Royals, I wouldn't think too deeply into the Getz thing. I think it's just about the options - this isn't really a contending year, so give the guy a final chance to prove himself before they're forced to drop him completely.

The mark of a good GM is to NEVER give his manager a chance to derail the process by signing an overrated veteran who makes alot of outs and just enough hard contact to intrigue said manger (YUNI). Never forget that baseball people spend their whole lives seeing great hitters make 7 outs in 10 chances, they just don't understand the value of the 27 outs they are given until they are sitting with a 395 winning percentage in early June and scoring 3.2 runs a game gets old enough that catching the ball seems not quite so important.

Congrats on the child. I have one. Can't imagine 4.

I would believe that the awesomeness of the birth doesn't get less with experience, but again I can only try to imagine.

okok kind of hit the nail on the head.

My biggest problems right now are the fact that Gordon isn't signed and that Moore had the audacity to say that he was afraid of blocking someone. Oswalt, Jackson or both of them would look pretty good right now.

I wish they would have kept Coleman, but I am not too disappointed to have Herrera.

I absolutely hate the safeness of the Getz and Dyson decisions. Horrible.

Excited about Cain. Especially the defense. He is important for that Royals stadium outfield.

The Quintero trade is also horrible. He was going to be released. And why do they add someone like Bourgeois? For this year, and for the statement it gives to everyone in the organization, I would have liked to have seen what Cody Clark and Pena could do.

okok is right in that there is a definite need for starting pitchers, but I don't think he is right in that it is important to worry about the small stuff too.

If they can't get the small stuff right, how are they ever going to get the big stuff?

Congrats on the new addition! It is clear you are a genuine Royals Fanatic, so you are excused for your wild optimism and temper tantrums. Among a crew of old diehards from the Municpal Stadium days (remember Dick Drago?), I am very familiar with the same condition. We finally signed Gordon for 4 years!! Yippee. We can all finally exhale and give Dayton a pat on the back. We need Alex in the fold. I was sad to see Soria blow out his elbow again. $6M for not a pitch then considering throwing more $Ms into that hole isn't very "Belicheckian" and I think maybe we should go in other directions, like maybe Crowe or Holland. Signing Broxton is appearing to have been very foresighted. If sending Johnny down to work on his fielding results in a vast improvement by June it will be a good move, but I don't see how he can improve that dramatically. He might be better off taking extra reps with the big club and having his bat on the bench and keeping him in the mix. If it turns out he really can't cut it in the field it would be a major scouting blunder and the waste of a high draft pick. But I like having his bat available. Who else do we have on the bench with his pop? I like Getzie and hope he keeps "hitting the cover off the ball". I see us a little over .500 this season and I will gladly accept that as steady progress. I'm looking forward to checking it out at the K for "realsies". Keep rambling Rany! You crank out some of the best Royals articles I can find.

I am very glad they got the Gordon signing done.

But what I don't understand is why Moore goes backwards on some of these deals.

I mean he already had a contract in place for 2012. Just build on top of that contract and not re-write 2012.

Did the same thing with Francoeur. They had a 4MM option for 2012 and instead of exercising the option they tore that up and gave him a new contract.

If you have such a small payroll compared to the rest of the league you have to use it much wiser than he does.

Long time lurked here; just wanted to offer my congrats to Rany and his recently expanded family. I also appreciate the analysis of the Royals by Rany - don't know where he finds the time after work and family. For myself, I am cautiously optimistic about the coming season, although the injuries to Perez, Soria and Paulino have made me ratchet back expectations a bit. I'm not hoping for wins so much as development of the younger core such as Hosmer, Moustakas, Duffy, Paulino and Holland.

I have always been a bit skeptical of the team contending this year.

The Francouer and Chen moves reminded me of a gambler who has had a good run, but doesn't leave the table. Instead, he gets cocky and starts betting more. That usually ends up in a story that starts "Well, I WAS up alot but then.....)

You have commented extensively about the failure to acquire (at least) one more starter. The Cabrera for Sanchez trade was a good one, but we are asking for too many of the following things to happen: Hochevar continuing the improvement we saw last year, Chen staying the same or getting better, Duffy improving, Paulino to build on last year, Sanchez returning to success, Mendoza defying the odds, and somebody in the minors stepping up when less than 5 of these happen. None of these pitchers have ever thrown 200 innings. Their average career ERA as starters is 5.18. That is a whole lot of hopeful improvement.

As for the hitters, being young, everyone always expects progression, but the other gression (regression) often rears it's ugly head. Two of the veterans (Gordon and Francouer) are coming off career years, and some of the young guys might fall victim to the sophomore slump as the league figures them out. (Remember Beltran's second year?)

Add the injuries, the craziness at second base, (Getz the starter again, Yuni back, Bourgeois?) and you start to wonder if this hopeful season isn't heading for disaster.

I am hopeful that enough things go right for them to eke out a season at .500 or just above, but I think that might be their ceiling.
