he threw the no hitter in 2009, for the record.

love your column tho: as a Giants fan I am middling on this deal. we really needed something besides an average corner outfield bat, and he ain't gonna work in center...

I agree this trade indicates DM thinks the Royals can win the division in 2012. If so, it also probably logically follows that they are likley to secure another starting pitcher and, if a high prized free agent is realistically available, they might make the move.

I was initially disappointed that we traded Cabrera for a pitcher under our control for only one year. I thought we should have secured one with at leat two years on club control, but Rany suggests there was not a significant market for Cabrera and I definitely agree Cabrera was the right guy to trade. All things being equal, if we could have secured a comparable level pitcher with more than one year of control, we should havd done so. I guess the asnwer is that there was not one available.

Rany, as a Giants fan, I'm frustrated. The local media (Andy Baggerly, Hank Schulman) disliked Sanchez (the former once wrote an article blaming him for losing a 1-0 game) and made it clear. His English isn't very good, and that made his communication harder as well; he wasn't a Mark Grace / Aubrey Huff type who gave the reports lost of quotes, and his wildness was madenning to anyone (including us fans). But his stuff is ridiculously good when on - the deception is absurd.

Side note: Sanchez is a free agent after 2013, not 2012. 2 years of control.

I assume arb costs are so high the Royals would move him after this year.

No, he's a free agent after this year. This is his third year of arbitration.

I absolutely loved this trade as well, for all the reasons Rany mentions. Another reason is I think Cain can be a very good leadoff hitter, allowing the Royals to move Gordon to #2 or lower, where his power will better drive in runs.

I think overall, Cain vs. Melky will be a wash, with Cain better defensively but with less offense than Melky at least power-wise. Now you put Jonathan Sanchez in our rotation vs. Sean O'Sullivan/Vinny Mazzaro, and that's where the HUGE improvement comes from. LOVE THIS TRADE!

This Zambrano stuff is funny. I was listening to Nick Wright yesterday when he interviewed Dayton. At the end of the interview Wright asked an innocent question that Mark Carmen had asked him to. That was all. Dayton basically said it was not a stupid question (which Wright had suggested it was) and said that he was willing to listen to legitimate offers on any pitcher. Amazing how this has blown up. People need to calm down.

I do believe you are correct Rany in saying that Dayton will make another move. I doubt it will be Zambrano though.

By the way, the question Wright asked was whether Dayton would laugh at an pick up Zambrano if he was releaed by the Cubs. Of course, Dayton said he would look at any option.

Sanchez has his warts,
.... this from a dermatologist.

How severe an anomaly are warts?
All kidding aside, great piece, as usual.

As a Giants fan, I'm not sure I agree with the assessment that they don't have a single quality outfielder. Andres Torres didn't have a great 2011, but he was terrific off the bench in 2009 and then spectacular when given a starting job in 2010. The effect of this trade was to relegate him to the bench, which is why I don't like it.

MLE calculator here: http://mlsplits.drivelinebaseball.com/mlsplits/mlecalc

Cain's line translates to .268/.314/.413 with 12 home runs and 67 stolen bases (18 caught stealing).

Uh-oh.

I typed "executioner" into Babel Fish and sure enough, it English-to-Spanish translated to "verdugo." But then I reverse translated and it told me that "verdugo" is Spanish for "twig."

I agree with everything in this article. Cabrera was a nice windfall, but the Royals need pitching more than outfielders. 150 odd innings of league average pitching drives the Sean O'Sullivans and Vince Mazzaros out of the tail end of the rotation.

I see the trade as basically fair. Both sides get an inconsistent player who can look great one year and terrible another. The possibility that Sanchez figures out the strike zone is a nice lottery ticket, but he doesn't have to do it for the Royals to be solidly improved.

This was a VERY good move for the Royals. Sanchez is only around for one year, so if he figures out great, if not it doesn't matter. Sanchez, Paulino, Hoch (2nd half), and Duffy are going to be strike out machines. But the bullpen is going to get crazy worked alot of the nights. I guess that's why they have 8 man bullpens now.

Cabrera was not likely to repeat his 2011 production. Selling High on him was the way to go. I don't think they lose much moving Cain into the lineup, if anything at all. Cabrera had never hit like this before, and the defense was pretty ugly in CF. Cain is a HUGE upgrade on defense.

LOVE THE TRADE!!

I like the trade for all of the reasons in the article. However, Cain being right handed does hint that the Royals do need at least a sometimes fill in who hits from the left side.

I'm okay with this trade. Thrilled it didn't cost us one of our real prospects.

Its an odd trade that we could actually "lose" the trade (i.e. Melky outperforms Sanchez)and yet the team will be better off because of Cain's superior defense.

Steve N, they have LHH options in the system already. Whether Maier comes back is still up in the air. They also have Lough (Left Handed), Dyson (LH), Falu (Switch hitter), D.Robinson (SH), and a few other options that are further out.

Can you imagine reading this article about a year ago? When so many people were saying the Cabrera signing proved that Moore had no idea how to build a major league team?

Zambrano would seem to be another risky investment. He has had years when he has been quite good. But not recently. He did get extended periods of rest last season. (Involuntarily)

Kyle, while those guys all hit from the left side none would seem to be impact bats. Maybe OK is enough.

Moore has never spent more than 1 mil on a backup player. Cain, Francoeur, and Gordon are most likely going to play every single day. So the need for a bench is pretty minimal. Yost does not use his bench like most coaches should. All he really needs is a backup C, and a Utility player that plays all over the field. Then he could keep a 9 man bullpen.

Just read there will be no fanfest this year! Team will be focusing on All-Star Game activities instead???? Can they not multi-task? Hire additional support?

This really irritates the hell out of me. GRRRRRRR!!!!!

Like the Sanchez trade, BTW.

Wil Meyers will not be traded this off-season to put us 'over the top'. With a roster this young, it would be an idiotic gamble to think Dayton Moore thinks we will contend for a title. HOWEVER, sports being unpredictable as they are: If the Royals are sitting at or above .500 at the All-Star break this year and... Frenchy is playing well and Meyers is playing well, only then would the Royals would part with Meyers in what would still be a CLEAR gamble move bringing in a pitcher. However, if the Royals are showing their age come the the trade deadline, if they are well under .500, and Frenchy is playing well, Frenchy will be traded and Meyers will get an early promotion.

November 13, 2011 at 7:28 AM

Blogger Kenneth said...

JMJ, not if Frenchy maintains last season's swagger he won't. If they wouldn't bump anyone from the Big Club for the Painkiller then they are definetly not going to promote Will Rogers unless he starts treating Triple A like Albert Pujouls treats the majors. That's the benefit of depth.

If you don't like this Sanchez trade for the Royals I think you have to be crazy. Pitchers with k/9 rate < 9 available for players making $2mil/year just don't exist. Either he is good and the kids don't push him out of a spot or he's bad and he's gone in two years. I'm betting we get a pitcher better than Felipe Paulino.

Rumor has it Cole Hamels is on the market. Would 2 years of Hamels be worth trading Myers, or am I crazy?

November 14, 2011 at 9:20 PM

Blogger Michael said...

IF Hamels is on the market, it would take a lot more than just Myers to get him. But yes, if Philly was willing, I'd do that in a heart beat.

November 15, 2011 at 2:32 AM

Blogger Kyle said...

This is Sanchez last year of arbitration. So if he is bad this year, he is gone. If he is decent and the other arms aren't pushing him out, maybe they sign an extension.

Hamels is also in his last year of arbitration, so I would not give up Myers. Unless he is signing an extention with the trade. And then I don't know if I include Myers. Myers has 6 years of cost control ahead of him, and is expected to be an impact bat in the middle of the lineup.

November 15, 2011 at 9:41 AM

Blogger Michael said...

Kyle-key word there is "expected". He's a prospect who has shown zero ability so far in the majors. If the Phils were dumb enough to accept only Wil Myers in trade AND we were able to sign Hamels to an extension to keep him longer than one year, you'd be dumb to pass it up.

We have the salary space, so if that were available (which I highly doubt it is, the Phils and Hamels are talking extension themselves right now) you'd have to jump on it quickly.

A note on MLBTR says that with the Sanchez trade the Royals are no longer looking for a front line pitcher. If true, they better resign Chen as a long reliever. With that rotation, he'll get a lot of work.
