It’s true that, by 2014, Duffy and Paulino should be healthy, and that Jake Odorizzi, John Lamb, Yordano Ventura, and even Kyle Zimmer might be ready for a rotation spot. Obviously all six guys won’t make it...

Given the Royals' track record on developing pitching talent, NONE OF THEM WILL MAKE IT!

You're spot on with how the Royals waste 2 or 3 million here and there and then whine that they can't spend money. But the real crime is the BS regarding how they have a ceiling of 85 million for payroll that Matt Davis mentioned in his tweet tonight when he talked with Dayton. The only word I could think of is, "chilling." They REALLY think that we as fans are that dumb.

I don't care what Dayton hears from David Glass. If Moore has an ounce of integrity he should make moves that cause the upper mgmt to call him on it and start a firestorm with him possibly being fired. Its not like the man won't be hired by anyone else. Everyone knows he is talented. He should have loyalty to those that pay the freight, THE FANS. I think all would support him because we know who the main culprit is, the Glass family. They need to be publicly shamed, nationally if possible. We deserve better.

I did not renew my season tickets after 7 years. Not a long time, but I have had enough. They asked for customer service reasons why I wasn't renewing. I said because the team wasn't winning and I'm only concerned with the teams wins and losses, not carousel's and putt-putt courses. I really do hope they turn it around, but it is looking like Dayton Moore's hands are tied!

Bryan, I had season tix from '79 thru '99, and they never once asked me why I didn't renew, and they never made another sales pitch or sales call in the future. Now, I doubt I would have signed on again, but they didn't even try. Last year I went 5 times with seats I got on stubhub for 10-25% of face value, and was invited twice by other people. That method works for me.

Rany, would you ever consider writing a Chiefs blog? :-)

The Royals will never be contenders. They have lost their way in identifying pitching. Oakland traded away their two best starters and closer a year ago. The result wasnt last place. It was a first place finish. The Royals have developed or traded for 2 top starters in last 20 plus years. Neither by this regime.
They have built a nice lineup. But our current makeup suggests we be # 1 in offense to succeed. Would mean scores like 10 to 8 to win games. However, we have the wrong ballpark for that ideal. Would need the fences brought in. Our park is designed for pitching and defense.
That being said I like Dayton. Even if he wont get rid of Hochever. Or has a poor success rate in trades outside of Greinke deal.

Cubs fan here. This was one of the best written sports blog entries I've ever read.. True insight and tough love for the team you call your own. Kudos, you are a talented writer and good luck in the off season.

Although I would love to be laughing at this column in a couple months I'm afraid I won't be. I still think I'm going to win the 50$ bet I made with a friend 15 years ago that the Royals will win the World Series before the Chiefs win the Superbowl.

Here is the comment that bothered me:

Moore said. “He’s had some success, but it’s mostly been down lately.
“That being said, you get guys when they’re on the downturn. You don’t get them when they’re on the upturn.

Whether it's Davies, Sanchez, Hoechever or Volstad, Moore seems to take delight in finding the next diamond in the rough. With Soria and Paulino, he seems to want to say "look what I uncovered." They cannot bear the thought of Hoechever "figuring it out" with another team. Problem is, we have to endure more than excessive horrendous starts from guys like Sanchez or Davies before they finally cut bait. Take a chance on a guy with just a little bit of upside, rather than always going after the guy with a lot of upside...and a lot of downside.

Saying, "We know who we are..." to a fanbase that has witnessed year after year after year of historically bad losing is not the way to instill confidence in your fan base (what's left of it) entering the offseason.

I'm thinking this is more of an insurance move in case the Royals can't complete a trade or can't sign the free agents they want. Volstad is a fallback option in case Plans A, B, and C fail. It has to be, right?

I think this year will make it pretty clear if the Royals intend to compete, or if they just will do enough to be "respectable" while they pull in all the money from revenue sharing and TV.

If it's the latter, I agree that there will be a dramatic dropoff in attendance, including yours truly.

On a separate note, Rany - how many parallels do you see between the way people reacted to Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus on the one hand, and Nate Silver of the New York Times on the other?

If you're betting on whether the Royals win the World Series, or the Chiefs win the Super Bowl first, that may be a bet that neither party wins in their lifetimes.

I would rather see Mike Montgomery in the rotation to start the year than Hochevar, Chen, & Volstad. At least he has upside.

Just putting this out there...

Luke Hochevar 2012: 1.5 fWAR
Matt Garza 2012: 1.2 fWAR

Garza isn't much of an improvement, is older than Volstad, and is 3 times as more expensive...plus whatever we would lose via trade.

Angels are most likely trading one or both of Ervin Santana and Dan Haren today. I'm really hoping that Dayton Moore is burning up their phone lines! I would be happiest with Haren, but Santana wouldn't be too bad either.

The thing that really frustrates me about this situation is that Moore is almost certainly going to use the excuse that top tier free agents all wanted multi-year contracts (like he did last year) and that is why he didn't sign any of them. But if pitching is the currency of baseball, can't he simply trade some of those starters down the road when we have this fictional excess of starting pitching? Isn't this what 'currency', by definition, is?

Well, they pulled the trigger on Santana. Only gave up Brandon Sisk to get him too, and they get cash in the deal? How much I'm not sure, but still, that's a pretty good deal for us.

Rany, Haren's option isn't due until Friday.

Also want to comment briefly on the Royals supposedly scouting James Paxton. Two things: You realize that every team scouts every game in the Arizona Fall League, don't you? There are only three games a day. Of course they were looking at Paxton. So was everybody else. Plus, it was a game against Surprise, where the Royals have their prospects playing. Naturally there were Royals scouts there. Second, a Seattle sportswriter chose to comment on it with speculation, which is fine. Everybody with pitching picks the Royals for trade partner speculation right now, because they have many desirable young pieces. Press speculation means nothing. I wouldn't sweat it.
