In other words, there's not much of an incentive for these major studios to want to fund a more adult animated film unless it's also a very successful franchise like The Simpsons.

Otherwise, guys like Ralph Bakshi and probably even Bill Plympton often have to independently raise the funds themselves in order to make their projects a success.

Trends come and go and there are always going to be companies trying to copy and imitate them. There are also always going to be super overrated or even bad films that rein in the big bucks anyway. The live action movie Man of Steel, which I saw over the weekend, is an example of this at work depending on who you talk to.

Am I reading this right?

These numbers reflect retail sales. But Disney is not making these products, they only license images to be put on these products. So it's not like Disney made 1.60 billion of the Princess franchise. Disney made a lot of money, but certainly not 1.60 billion, right?

I wonder if there is published info on how much they make in licensing fees? Not to diminish the power of the figures cited here, but I would think licensing fees would be less than a tenth of the figures on this list.

And that's still a HUGE amount of money.

You're right, Chris. Thanks. I've rewritten the entry to better represent that.

I'm very surprised that the Muppets (global) property aren't on the list.
You with think that with their visibility, they'd be somewhere up near the top.

That said, there are still a lot of $$$ to be earned from lower tier properties.
