In Russian animation, they've made cartoons that get rid of that gap between drawings and backgrounds. Little Tiger on the Sunflower is one example. The characters and other animated elements are less detailed than the backgrounds still, though.

On late evenings, we would leave Disney and drive down the street to UPA. Back in the fifties, UPA was breaking new ground and truly driving animation in a bold new direction.

As much as we loved Disney, UPA was where things were happening.

Funny, I was thinking about this DVD collection just a couple days ago and wondering when it was due to come out. I couldn't find it on Amazon and was worried that maybe the release got canceled. Anyway, thanks for letting us know where we may order it from.
