I've been very desirous to see this. Distribution has been limited in the states as well. Glad to hear that it meets expectations!

A minor correction, the grandfather's quest was to get to the North Pole, though the quest to find a Northwest Passage does factor in the story. The film, by the way, did get a Best Animated Feature — Independent Annie Awards nomination.

Long Way North may be a great film, but you gotta consider what Walt Stanchfield said, about how people basically just go to the movies as escapism. Life for many is a barrage of horrifying shit, they don't want to be reminded of that when they sit in front of a screen. Only those with the privilege to have refined tastes can appreciate films like this, which makes their audience small and investors willing to take risks on them tiny.

Studios like Ghibli or Madhouse are strange beasts, forged from powerful personalities who outdid the odds.
