Great description and analysis--and you're right--it is Moore's best, I think. All cylinders firing and not a trace of "cute".

Isn't there a brief button of relief in the form of a throwawayline from Jiminy about boys/jackasses at the end of the scene, when they're outside the poolhall? Something that comes off a little humorous-put there like a salve?
I might be imagining it.

Boy howdy, my dad STILL talks about this scene today. He was completely terrified by Lampwick's transformation. Whenever there's some people turning into animals bit on any other movie, my dad gets the heebie-jeebies.

Great analysis, Mark!

This is a great and frightening scene; thanks for the detailed analysis.

Interestingly enough, if you search youtube for "Scariest Scene in Film History Ever," it's the first result.

Jenny, Jiminy says "Go on, laugh! Make a jackass out of yourself. I'm through! This is the end!" This takes place when Lampwick has insulted Jiminy and he abandons the boys before discovering the truth about the donkeys. It's sequence 8-3, shot 62 by Ward Kimball. It's a bit of foreshadowing.
