You're right--compared to this great, great horror scene the death of Bambi's mother is practically lyrical. Looking at the static caps I can see and hear the entire sequence(which I haven't watched in quite a while), it's that shocking.
Cutting, action, reaction--all tops. The cut from the animalistic, frantic action of "Lampwick"/ass going beserk to Pinoke just staring as shown here with not much more than a slow blink of stunned, creeping disbelief/fear/shock...that's the kind of contrast that isn't done much any more in any kind of cinema--and which is perfectly suited to animation.
