[Image] DC Comic's first go-round with their title, THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD lasted for nearly 3 decades beginning with the first issue dated August-September 1955. Originally an anthology title starring characters from historical ages, it evolved into a team-up book pitting heroes such as Batman and a partner against the villain-of-the-month. Issue #31 introduced Calvin "Cave" Carson, a daring spelunker (that's a person that explores caves) who travels the lower depths in search of adventure using his "mole machine". Springing from the success of Jack Kirby's earlier comic, CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN, Carson's character was likely influenced by Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth and Edgar Rice Burroughs. To the delight of readers, along the way he encountered assorted and sundry monsters. In this, his first adventure, Cave and his fellow cave divers meet the Incredible Lava Creature!
