Loved TZ magazine back in the day — bought the first issue at the old Cahuenga Newsstand off Hollywood Blvd. Those first four of five T.E.D. Klein-edited issues hit me at exactly the right time. I had re-discovered the old TZ series on KTLA and taped it religiously, there was a renaissance in new sf, horror and fantasy films in full swing, and I was deep into my obsession with King and other promènent horror writers of that era, Etchison, Lumley, Wagner, et al. The TZ mag was like a gift from the Elder Gods.

Thé L.A. Times article on the plight of used bookstores in the Valley is a nostalgic gut-punch. I well remember a time when there were that many used bookstores — so many that you could only visit a few of them in a single afternoon’s outing. A typical book crawl would start at the Golden Mall (when San Fernando was open to foot traffic only), hit Book City and Book Castle and Movie World, swing by Dutton’s over on Laurel Canyon and grab a bite at Pioneer Chicken next door while I payed through the day’s newly acquired treasures. They’re all gone now, of course — Book Castle / Movie World closed for good just a few years ago. Paperback Shack (I used to buy magazines and comics at their Panorama City annex too), Briggs Books in Northridge, all those wonderful places — alas.

We didn’t realize how spoiled for choice we were at the time. Now I think there are exactly two used bookstores in the entire Valley, and who knows if they’ll survive the Covid-19 lockdown.

Love your blog, BTW, check it out daily. Long time lurker, first-time commenter, etc

Thank you for breaking your silence with your nice comment, b.t.! You struck a chord of pleasurable nostalgia with your memories of the S.F. Valley's bookstores. My sister worked at Dutton's for a couple of years -- that place was a class act. I didn't know the Paperback Shack had an annex!

I lived at the west end of the Valley (Vanowen and Valley Circle) from the age of 10-18, graduated from El Camino Real in Woodland Hills. My monster mag and comic Mecca was the newsstand outside the Owl/Rexall Drug Store on Sherman Way.

And, Pioneer Chicken! I always liked their batter over the Colonel's. My frequent trips to Hollywood and the string of bookstores there (Larry Edmond's, Cherokee Books, etc.) usually ended up with a short rib feast at Love's Pit BBQ. Great memories.

Thanks again for your comment. Please feel free to check in any time.
