Well, his grandparents belonged to a Unitarian church in 1950s, and his mother attend the youth group there, but he may or may not been raised UU. As a UU, I can certainly say he sounds like he was pretty familiar with our basic beliefs and principles. But as the parent of two young adults who were raised UU, I can say that, just as in many denominations, our children don't always follow in our spiritual footsteps. He doesn't seem to self-identify as UU.
I found myself wondering, during the smear campaigns, whether being UU would be seen by his enemies as better or worse than being Muslim.
Thanks for posting, Jo. I didn't know about Obama's family's UU background. I don't actually think Obama's a UU. I was just being silly with this headline/post.
We have proof: The Obamas attended a private memorial service for Madelyn Dunham, who lived in a modest apartment here and died of cancer at age 86 two days before the presidential election. The service was held at the First Unitarian Church of Honolulu, a two-story house converted into a place of worship. The service was closed to the media.
