The Colbert clip is entertaining, but I have to admit that I've fallen into the "WWIII" trap myself. Hear me out... An Israel-Lebanon war isn't worthy of that moniker, and hopefully that's all this will be. But there are still enough ominous entanglements and war plans out there that it certainly doesn't seem implausible that with the right chain of events, a lot of Asia would find itself at war. Three local conflicts between Israel/Lebanon/Syria/Iran, Pakistan/India/China, and North Korea/South Korea/Japan, when added to the U.S. occupation of Iraq would put a contiguous string of countries half a planet wide all in simultaneous (if not directly related) conflict. In fact, WWII was really a mishmash of a war in Europe spearheaded by Germany, and a simultaneously occurring war in Asia and the Pacific centered around Japan. So, if you had bordering wars all the way across Asia, and the U.S. was involved, yeah, I'd say that's a World War. On the other hand, WWI was basically just a European monarchy pissing contest that happened to involve a few colonies by accident, so I could see it getting stripped of World War status. So no, this isn't World War III, OR World War IV, but get ready for World War II!

Excellent! How many world wars isn't the current violence? So far it's not WWII, III, or IV? Another reason that the name WWII could be available is to say that the wars from 1914-18 and 1939-45 were really just the same war with an extended intermission for some jazz music and a global depression.

Yeah, I think WWI should be forced to revert to its old moniker, "The Great War". Or better yet, "The one with all the trenches." WWII could then get renamed "The one with the Nazis" or "The one that has about a zillion movies made about it."

I agree that the Israel-Hezbollah-Lebanon war might expand into something worthy of the name "World War" if a lot of people do a lot of stupid things at the same time (which could very easily happen-my opinion of humanity's ability to avoid studpidity is rather low). But what I'm objecting to is right-wing meme spewers saying this is already a world war and there therefore it is obvious that we need to join in.
