I don't think this discrepancy is entirely the makings of the Republican Party. Iran's doing a pretty good job of drawing attention to itself as well. Pakistan also doesn't have a "solution" that's as seemingly obvious. It will take some amount of attention to stabilize Pakistan, but without a good deal of finesse, Musharraf just becomes the corrupt Shah we're propping up. Right now, I just don't think the U.S. in capable of helping things there.

How come we’re not worried about Pakistan? I mean, Iran doesn’t have the bomb yet. Pakistan does. And the whole A. Q. Kahn scandal/pardon fiasco shows that Pakistan has a history of selling this stuff. Taylor Marsh says the only person talking about Pakistan is emptywheel on The Next Hurrah. Which is why I invite everyone, every time someone raises the "Iran problem" to respond with a question about the "Pakistan problem." By addressing the latter first, we're more likely to succeed. And we'll break the cycle of chasing down one after another "rogue state" crisis. More importantly, by addressing the problem of nuclear proliferation at its source, we might be able to stop invading all these other countries. And while we eliminate that threat everywhere, we can try to establish real relations with Iran before it becomes the problem it is promised to be, five years down the road.
