Thank you for posting these notes Jeff. They clearly explain what I have been hearing for some time. As it's annoying enough for me to do something about, I plan to start with the 'slow AGC' mod and to just short out that 10k resistor.
Like you , I am looking for the best audio for normal SSB monitoring/rag-chewing.

I bought a really nice FT-1000D 6 months back, but could not listen to it, as it had this annoying distortion/crunching sound. So it was shelved, until I came upon your fix. I shorted the 10k resistor, and put it back together.
Now when I switch between slow and medium AGC, I can hear the crud on the medium position, that used to be on slow. My slow AGC position is now crystal clear. I think I will short out the medium one also, and use fast AGC when I do CW.
Thanks a million for your advice, I can now start using my FT-1000D without being frustrated
